I am a 35 year old dude, active, fit, and I just got this. So annoying! Feels like a weird rug burn or a scald, sensitive to the touch, but no visible markings on the skin.

Someone mentioned it could be like a virus, and I did just have kind of a viral upper respiratory thing. I've also been sleeping less than usual, sitting a lit in the office, and driving for 4+ hours one way.

Is your knee leaning against something on your commute? Like your door panel or dashboard/radio, center console?

Phew, thanks for your info. I'm the same except it's my left knee and I'm aware that I press it against the centre console in the car as a brace when I'm cornering etc. (I'm in Australua - right hand drive). I thought it was something rather sinister as the burning sensation when I kneel on it (even in the soft bed) is quite painful.

I am awakening with bilateral burning knee pain....a rug burn is exactly what they feel like. I exercise, had a recent back injury and also have had knee surgeries so I suppose they are arthritic. I am a pain doctor and "burning dyesthesia" is generally most likely from nerve pain. Lidocaine creme to the affected area is most likely to be helpful. I don't recall running across this in my training or practice and that's how I landed here. But at least until I find a specific explanation I will assume it is so odd neuropathic pain.....it just started but I recall the first time I woke up with the sensation I was trying to remember if I had done something to skin my knees or get a rug burn.....

I have exactly the same pain as you do. I fell and smashed my knee. Went for an x ray today!

I have had this same sensation for about 2weeks now but there has been no injury whatsoever. It just started for no reason I can think of. It happens with both knees and is not directly on the knee but to the dice a little. It is on the outside of the knee. I have bee searching the Internet but no one seems to know what this is can anyone help?

Infrapatellar Saphenous Neuralgia
Reply
Patellar bursitis, or "pre-patellar bursitis", is located over the front of the patellar ligament and kneecap (patella); see the picture to the right. The pain is located right in the front of your knee, and it can even be painful to have the bedsheets touch your skin in this area.
The pain of both of these types of bursitis is usually better with rest or even using some heat over the areas of pain. This is the most common type of bursitis.

I have exactly the same symptoms. It doesnt really bother me, I still run and train, but its strange. You descirbed it very well. Like a rug burn but invisible.

The burning sensation that you get near your patella (below or to either side) with no apparent trauma can be a damaged sensory nerve. The infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve can get damaged when kneeling on a hard surface. This creates a burning sensation when touched or rubbed, but no pain when walking, running, etc. Kneeling will be painful as well. There will be no swelling, redness, or any other sign of a problem. It's very common to happen at age 40 and older. It may take many months to heal as the nerve regenerates very slowly, but it will heal on its own. Avoid kneeling on hard surfaces in the meantime. I'm a chiropractor and have come across this before. I hope this helps!

Mine just arrived after surgery to repair ankle cartilage. No doctor seems to know about it. Now there is a case study.

Curious that this condition has migrated from knee to knee. I had it in the distal joint of one of my big toes for half a year, then on one of my kneecaps for four months, then on the back of my heel for a few months, and now on my other kneecap for going on four months. I do not feel any pain other than the sharp pain when I apply pressure in just the right way, such as kneeling on the knee or resting my heel on a hard surface (when it was in my heel). I have not experienced any swelling or redness or heat in any of the locations. It'll be two years in May since it first appeared in the toe.

I have the exact same thing! If I kneel down on my right knee I get a jolting nerve pain just below my knee cap on the right side. If I find the right spot and poke it, yikes! It hurts bad. No visual signs of injury and I don't feel pain unless I kneel or press on it. It is very painful. What is it?

Infrapatellar Saphaneous Neuralgia is probably what it is.

I have this same problem and don't know what's wrong, it hurts when I'm in the process of laying down on my bed. Then it stops
