From what I've read, the treatment is to take nothing but water by mouth for perhaps three days, as determined by symptoms. Anything your body needs goes in through a needle.
I was admitted to the hospital with my second bout of pancreatitis. My first bout was 11 years ago and I was in the hospital for 8 days. They thought it was a gallstone that had blocked the pancreatic duct and must have passed before I went to emergency. I didn't know what was wrong, I thought it was a weird, painful flu so I stayed in bed for 3 days until my stomach had ballooned. This time I recognized the symptoms and went to emerg right away. They put me on IV for 48 hrs until my levels went down...no food or water. When the doctor told me it was ok to go home he said low fat diet, no more than a glass of red wine per day...I thought that odd. Still, over the next few days I took it easy, there was still discomfort, and I ate very little and chewed really well. My levels and pain went back up. So!!! My GP and a dietician are perplexed why the doctor wouldn't tell me to do clear fluids only for 2 to 3 days after leaving the hospital, having only been in 48 hours. My pancreas still needed rest. Two weeks later I am back on clear fluids for 3 days before adding broth with pureed squash or peas (can't wait! I am so hungry). Follow a smart diet people - and if you are fresh out of the hospital, clear fluids for 2 - 3 days unless you have already been doing it in the hospital! I don't want to have this again, and I don't want pancreatic cancer down the road. Vegan, or almost vegan diets seems the smart choice, and no booze at all! Not everyone is the same as far as what they can and can't tolerate. Listen to your body. I crave boiled eggs, and they don't cause me any problems - I eat at most 2 per week - avocado I am good with and use it instead of oil on salad dressings. Beans are great, after you've healed. And everything you eat in a day should be divided into six small portions...I think that is key so your don't overtax your system. I am also taking enzymes right now - even on my clear fluid diet...just in case. Also, super great is papaya juice and aloe vera juice mixed 1/3 cup of each and drink 3 times per day. This soothed me right away - I read about it online and several websites say it's amazing it is! I will keep this as part of my regular diet. So slowly work into solids, and don't have anything white - whole grains really are best. I am well on the road to healing now...I feel almost normal sometimes...a lot thinner though. Also, don't drink a lot of fluids all at once...slow is best.
I forgot to mention that I was diagnosed with pancreatic divisum. It's quite common but most people don't have a problem. They didn't see it in X-rays or ultrasounds...it took an mri to see it. A congenital defect that most people who have it don't even know it. So it never was my gallbladder that I was initially diagnosed with 11 years ago...thank god they didn't take it out!!! Basically, if I eat too much, or have too much fat in a meal, the pancreas produces a normal amount of enzymes, but because my duct is too narrow the enzymes back up and cause inflammation. So its key to eat smaller meals through the day...snacks...healthy snacks...so the pancreas only produces enough that can travel through the duct without backing up. So if you don't know the cause...you might check divisum out.
Do not eat cereals like oats, brown rice, or anything fiberous - they are hard to digest, and require a lot of work on the pancreas' part, which is likely to trigger or worsen your condition.
Stick to white rice and white bread, and avoid other high sources of fiber.
I have been eating Amaranth and millet (grains), organic only, no meat or dairy and lots of vegetables and some fruit, all organic. Also Grapeseed extract twice a day, a probiotic, water or herbal teas, I also have been drinking 1 cup of water with 1/2 tsp. Of baking soda 3x a day; this has helped the most as it alkaizes the body.
Don't eat anything canned, frozen or packaged as the food contained therein isn't alive. Fresh, organic food contain living enzymes that nourish the body and heal the body as well. I can honestly say that in only two weeks I feel 90% better. Pat Smith.

You will do better to not eat the "bad foods"...if possible, get organic everything. Watch labels carefully. Carageenanin is in "health food" like almond milk, coconut milk, etc...it's a carcinogen! Be strict if you want to live longer, healthier, with no attacks. You are seriously eating wrong. It will catch up with you. The pain and damage to your pancreas is NOT worth it. Change your diet.
I feel so much the same! I really do not know much about pancreatitis at the time. I have been in and out of hospital over fifteen times due to it. morphine, help somewhat, but as soon as it wheres off the pain is back. i mostly eat dry bread and some soup, so miss the good food. family have never herd of Pancreatitis, so can not understand why i have lost so much weight , its not that i gone off Sunday dinners and burgers. my mum is always bringing me the food i used to like, and i accept it, but the n give it to the neighbors so not to break her heart.
Hi, same here. I am diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and was not able to eat for 9 days but I really don't feel any pain in my stomach, just body weakness, vertigo and 6x higher lipase and amylase than the normal
I can not stress this enough, but do not have GMO SOY, or part thereof, which is found in the majority of pre packaged foods and especially in soy milks etc...ONLY USE GMO FREE SOY....look it up and see how much trouble Monsanto went to to prove it safe. Ask your self this....15 years ago pancreatic cancer was 5th main cancer, its now heading for number 2....whats changed ?....GMO SOY.
I'd like to know the same thing. On day ten after my attack and am still in pain even though my levels have come down drastically. There are so many contradictory ideas diets etc.
