Such as a lost driver asking directions or a neighbor trying to start a conversation.
I usually try and help the drivers, the neighbors I politely say I will catch up with them when I am done.

I treat the person as I would any server... 8O
It depends on my mood and the type of run I'm doing. If I'm really serious about the run, then I don't stop for nuthin', but if not, I'll stop and chat (a lot).
i always help out
neighbors i just wave
lucky when most people stop me i know where most of the streets are in the county do they really get lucky

sad truth here is if someone asks me for directions I LIE. i have to tell them i just moved here even tho' it's been 5 years. I am clueless
lots and lots and lots and lots of people try to engage me in conversation when i run at the track. even though i have a look of pain on my face and walkman wires hanging out of my ears --- they will start talking to me when i pass them. sometimes, i just ignore them completely hoping they will see the WIRES. then, i pass them again and the same thing happens. i oughta...................
in the neighborhood, people wave. sometimes they wait at their mailbox and i see no other way than to stop and talk. how ignorant can i be in this situation? it is really frustrating to me.
so, i decide to run on the treadmill --- phone rings. sheeeeeeeesh.
I've only had 1 person stop and ask me for directions. So I stopped. Missed a pr on that course by 20 seconds.
I used to go to the HS track a lot. There was always this girl there who was about 10 yrs old with her mom that would constantly talk to me. It irritated me for awhile but I finally explained to her when I'm running leave me be, if I'm walking feel free to chat. :)
I try to give directions but since I suck at giving directions, I'm not sure if I'm helping anyone or not.
No one stops me (or for me, damn drivers), it must be my menacing presence. :P
If I can't answer w/o breaking stride then they don't get an answer.... except of course for the two times the police stopped me... stopped once because they thought I was fleeing a crime and once to ask if I'd seen the perpatrator of a crime (I had, they caught him!)....
