I'm twenty years old, in good psychical condition. Last year around December i rusted down a car i was restoring, after about 8 hours when i took off my mask i saw there was a hole in it, now for the last month, i have weird cough attacks and then blood seems to pour out of my mouth, its not mucus, its just blood and a lot of it. After im done coughing its almost impossible for me to breath because i get a sharp piercing pain in my chest, it hurts really bad to inhale and exhale. There are very tiny pieces of rust in the blood. I am going to the doctor on Monday but i wanted to have an idea, i dont want to be surprised... Can anyone help me?
Hi isiroletti,

If it's as bad as you say going to the Emergency Room may be a better place.

You'll probably get told you have pneumoconiosis. Basically, it's a generic term for "dust in the lungs." It's hard to say how much damage has been done. Your lungs are inflamed. The air isn't going in and out as it should. Expect to have at least a chest x-ray and bloods drawn. They'll need to measure your "blood gases" to see how well your lungs are actually working.

If you smoke, please don't.

You've probably heard about diseases such as emphysema? How about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Look them up and be ready to ask questions.

I'll give it to you worst case as I'm not going to tell you it'll all be OK. It is very possible that you're going to have respiratory problems the rest of your life.

I hope I'm wrong. Let us know what happens. Good luck.
