I have been on pain killers for several years with no prolems. I do not abuse them, I use them to relieve the pain. Last month I had 10 teeth pulled with much difficulty and on top of it I had a horrible infection. There are 3 doctors in the dentist office and during a period of 2 and a half weeks they wrote me scripots for a few extra pills, one for 10 hydro 5s, one for 16 hydro 5s, one for 20 perc7.5s, and went to the er once because of the pain from the infection, they also gave me 10 hydro 5s. All of which I ws honest & told them I was taking mscontin 30mg x3 daily, they told me to alternate because the pain was so intense. I was honest with my pain management dr and he released me from his care, and now my general dr doesnt write higher than hydro 7.5s. They are not helping me at all. I am trying to take only one every 6 hrs, but I cant handle the pain. I also am taking xanax to help with the anxiety, I am also on cymalta for depression. None of this is helping. Any suggestions? I am not physically ill, no sweating, no vomiting, just pure pain. What can can I do????
I had something kind of similar happen years ago when most doctors stopped writing or Oxycontin 80's after I had been on them for years. It's not right that these doctors give you the meds long term, than take them away sometimes when your being honest. Did you sign a pain agreement with your doctor promising you wouldn't get meds from any other Dr. or Dentist? If you did you violated your agreement when you got the scripts filled before telling your doctor that these dentists were also prescribing for your extractions. They take this stuff really seriously now. Did you also go to a different pharmacy with the dental scripts than the one you get your doctors scripts from? Their really strict about that too. There is so much narcotic prescription abuse going on especially in the last 10 years that doctors are highly suspicious of everyone regarding pain meds and many will think your playing them even if you aren't. The doctors in my case were so afraid of the government that they just cut all their patients off and wouldn't write scripts for most pain meds anymore. I ended up starting withdrawals even though I was switched to too low of a dose of methadone. I ended up losing my job because I was so sick all while I had to now find a new Pain Specialist. To me that should be a sue-able offence because people can get very sick and even seize or die when they are dependent on narcotic medications and are suddenly cut off without a plan. At least your doctor was willing to give you something so you wouldn't withdraw completely, even though it didn't work as good. The only thing you can do now is suffer until you find another pain doctor and this time follow the rules 110%. They don't mess around anymore or care about excuses no matter how legit. If your not sure of a similar situation with a new doctor make sure you ask him the steps you should take when having dental work or any other emergency issue.
The only doctor I could find quickly that I could be honest with and they were OK continuing my care was a doctor in the next state over. I had a 4 to 6 hour ride every month to go see that doctor. While I was seeing him I told him I would be looking for another Pain Specialist closer to home. He was fine with that as long as we transferred care and everything regarding meds was on the up and up.
Well 8 months later I found a good Pain Clinic in my city. It was costly though because I had no job for awhile and no health insurance. I've been at my current Pain Clinic for over 5 years now and other than their exorbitant fees I'm doing good. I have never taken the original medication I was initially prescribed that worked well for me. I stayed with Methadone but was put on an adequate dose. Then we discussed break-thru pain so I was given one other script for Oxycodone 7.5. I am doing much better. I have actually reduced my pain med usage in half in the last 5 years. This was my way of proving to my doctor that I was doing other things for my pain such as injections, usually cortisone, exercising when I could, eating better, Massage or Chiropractic when it could be afforded, and never ever excepting a pain script from another Dr. or dentist for any reason even if I felt I needed it badly. That's a big no no nowadays.
Unfortunately because of those who lie and abuse narcotic pain meds the people that really need them and don't abuse them will continue to pay. If because of some other reason what your taking isn't enough from time to time for any reason get your script increased slightly and save those few extras for the days you may need them or speak to your doctor about break thru pain. Try taking less on your better days and this way your covered for the bad or unexpected situations that arise from time to time.Ask your next doctor what he or she would have wanted you to do if you were facing another similar situation. Then have them put it in writing and you both sign it. Cover your ass. Many of these doctors have never had a long term chronic pain issue. They also need to consider tolerance for these meds. That's one of the benefits of Methadone. You really never build a tolerance. You start out with one and stay there or go down. Your need ever rarely increases. The meds you were taking usually create tolerances overtime.
If you truly were being honest and the doctor did that to you I'm so sorry that happened to you. By now I'm sure you found a solution. It's not a fun thing to be dependent on a medication especially the longer it goes on. For many people it is unfortunately necessary. Hopefully other solutions will arise in the future for some of us so we don't have to live script to script for the rest of our lives.
