On august 21st I had surgery on my big toe, they could not replace the joint so they cut and put a plate with screws to immobilize it , they said the bone will grow together , so my big toe joint will not flex, ok surgery went good, the foot all wrapped up well , no pain, after 4 weeks all is looking as good as it gets.
now the doctor placed a hardcast ,,,and said ' see you in 4 weeks', this Cast is terrible , its heavy , I cant use my scooter because of the pressure on my shin, everytime I shift my foot I feel pressure on my toes,
this did not happen before..... Im going to talk to the doctor this morning and insist that this comes off, I see this cast as a bad procedure.... anyone else go through this and what did they make you do .
thanks
They do this to fully immobilize your foot to promote correct healing (especially since they did a fusion) and to protect it, also, from weight-bearing at all the wrong times.
Your big toe and underneath it is the core of your balance for your feet and the balls of your feet and around that area are what supports your weight. Basically, your big toe and the region around it and under it is very important for mobility and stability when you're standing and moving AND it also supports the bulk majority of your body weight.
You just had surgery to fuse the toe/stabilize your toe... What if you fell on your unprotected foot because you tripped or otherwise banged your toe on a corner of a desk or chair or something.
This is what the hard cast is trying to prevent from happening - especially right after surgery.
Asking your doctor never hurts! Good luck!
Thanks for your reply, I m just questioning this because its been 4 weeks without a cast and in the last 24 hours I have felt more pressure and movement then the 4 weeks just being wrapped. I will post after I talk to the doctor.
I know it's a while later but I had mine fused and a plate is fitted to hold the joint together so no cast is needed. I just had the dressing removed after 2 weeks and am to use the velcro shoe they gave me when I walk and I have crutches to help avoid putting weight on it or loosing by balance. Did you heal well? Hope it is good now. :)
