Yesterday I was doing backflips on the grass but i messed up on one of them and I landed on my head and chest. My head was fine. The wind was knocked out of me and I couldn't breath well for 5 min. The hard breathing eventually stopped. When I started doing my parkour training again I had a sharp pain right in the center of my chest when I climbed over something using only my upperbody to keep myself up. It felt like something was moving around in my chest when that happened. When I sneeze, cough, or laugh i feel fine. The only time it was hurting bad was when that happened or when I push hard on something. Is my sternum broken or bruised? I don't want to tell my parents unless it is really serious or they will be mad. How do I treat it? Please help.

Hi Thowesn,

You may have bruised it, or some accessory muscles.

It is VERY difficult to break your sternum from what you describe.  Grass/dirt does give a little and absorbs the impact.  It typically take more of a crush type injury - chest into steering wheel for example, to break your sternum.

Hope it helps.

Hey there medic - dan. I am in the same situation and I can see that you do know a lot about this issue. I hope that I am not wrong.

I was fighting with my parents when I bought a motorcycle for my birthday. They were so mad at me ( I think that they were just scared). I understand them now. I had this accident a couple of days ago (three days to be exact) and I just can't tell them this.

But I feel huge, really huge pain in my chest, it is hard for me to breath... My girlfriend told me that I probably do have broken sternum and I don't know what to do.

I can't tell my parents since I am 17 years old, they will kill me...And take my motorcycle from me.
