I feel a lump in my throat all of the time too. II have been diagnosed with post nasal drip (PND). I also have a white lump on the right side of my throat. My throat hurts right on that spot when I swallow and I get a pain deep in my ear too. My ear is free from infection though and I had my tonsils out when I was 12. Doctors have put me on anitbiotics, nasal sprays and saline washes, but nothing has happened. I searched the net and found out about Oil of Oregano. From what I have read I feel that this may work for me. I am going to talk to someone at a health food store today. I asked around and the guy I am going to is very knowlegable of natural medicines. I am on a lot of medications and the stuff I have read points to possible elimination of some of them. I will be in 7th heaven if it works for me!!!! Try googling "OIL OF OREGANO ARTICLES" and read about it.

I have these tonsil stones as well....they smell horrible, they make my throat hurt and they suck!! I had been scraping them out with a q-tip but that would often make my tonsils hurt worse and it can spread the bacteria.

BUT, tonight i found the cure! Take a q-tip, dip it in hydrogen peroxide, and apply it to the puss pocket/tonsil stone. It will make it bubble and disenegrate!! also, there are creveces in the tonsils where the puss pockets build up. sometimes you can't even see them and they can be VERY deep!
When you put the q-tip with H2O2 on the tonsil and apply a little pressure, it should dislodge all of them. You will find so many and they come out much easier with hydrogen peroxide than just trying to get them out with a plain q-tip!
Before this, all the doctors said the only thing I could do was get them removed...well, no longer! This is amazing. I want everyone to know because I know how much these little guys suck, and this really works!!!
Try it...it might make u gag to stick something back there, but its totally worth it!

I had no idea what they were at first I was going to call my Dr. then I talked to my sister (she has really messed up tonsils) and she gets them all the time she coached me through getting them out. I seam to get a big one every two weeks I am going to try that therabreath stuff and hope it helps cause I refuse to poke back there for life. Two weeks of pain getting then removed vs. a week of pain every month forever does not make sense. I just hope my Dr agrees.

I read somewhere to try grapefruit seed extract (GSE), so I got a bottle of it at the health food store. i put a few drops in a few ounces of water and gargle with it. just started so don't know if it will work. its bitter awful stuff, but if it works, i'll gladly do it. actually the GSE gargle/mouth rinse solution is really great for freshening breath, kind of just neutralizes it, instead of making it minty with mouthwashes or gum, etc. I like it for that in any event.

I HATE TONSIL STONES. YUK YUK YUK YUK YUK YUK.

I've had tonsil stones for quite some time.

Besides the spray and other preventative measures, I have found that I can easily remove the tonsil stones manually.

The tonsil stones reside in a pocket near the top/front of the tonsil just behind the flap of flesh on ether side of the Uvula.

Get a flashlight and shine it in your mouth with one hand.

With your other hand's index finger move the flap to expose the front side of the tonsil. You may actually see the white stones.

Now use your index finger to push laterally from the bottom of the tonsil toward the top. This should squeeze the stones out. It's a little freaky at first to see the stones but once you are used to it, it is good to be rid of them.

Do both sides thoroughly and you will find that your breath will clear up almost immediately.

Hope this helps.

To the guy who said he thinks he has something stuck in his throat...

The reason you are feeling this "thing" in your throat is because you most likely do have something in your throat. Ask any doctor what a tonsil stone is and they probably wouldn't know. The condition isn't common enough, so most doctors wont know what or where to look when someone has a tonsil stone problem, even if you told them you were coughing up little white stones.

Unfortunately with this condition it is up to the patient to explain to the doctor what it is, and even show them articles about it on the internet (and doctors do NOT like being patients, so be prepared for a lengthy discussion)!

What I think you have is a very large tonsil stone that has snowballed from smaller stones over the years. These larger stones have been reported over 30mm big! It has formed in a small crevice in your tonsil, and is beneath your skin, so "throat cam" will not pick it up. I've got a feeling that your body could be reacting to the stone, and your acne could well be a symptom of that.

I read an article once where a patient was diagnosed with a throat tumor (after an x-ray), and had it surgically removed. None of the surgeons knew what they had just removed - it was just a large tonsil stone. Awareness of this disease is far too low in the medical world.

I agree with Lynnie Kennie concerning watching what you eat. As I grew up, I would cough up a tonsil stone "once in a blue moon" (rarely). However, in a recent 6-month time period, I coughed up tonsil stones one to three times a week, and sometimes the stones were like large clusters.

Recently, I began to think and declare that "I eat right", along with other changes, e.g. reducing meat intake (pork, beef and poultry) and eating more fruits, vegetables, etc. Since, then, I have been completely clear of tonsil stones and am glad to be free of needing to cough up those stinky stones, especially unexpectedly... like when people are around. After noticing the difference that changing my eating habits made, I also recalled that since I began working a new job shift (for the past 6 to 7 months), I was eating at fast food restaurants more (almost twice daily, breakfast and lunch....Monday through Friday) just to save time.

So now, I continue to be more selective in my food choices at the grocery stores and restaurants; and I eat at home more...having prepared ahead of time what I am going to eat. I like the concept of prevention in whatever way necessary...and if I need to gargle sometimes, I'll do that too, its worth it.

Tonsil stones are so annoying. i get them all the time and they range from being tiny to humongous. they usually come every week or so (for me) and so far the best solution i've come up with is dig around your tonsil crypts with a sterilized ear curette every night and morning.

Best solution to your problem is tonsillectomy, removing of your tonsils.

The best solution is to leave them alone. They can be popped out of your tonsils with a toothbrush or q-tip. but don't go to extreme measures and remove your tonsils. they help fight colds.

I have had tonsil stones ever since my father and I (at age 6 maybe) were playing in impromtu game that was something the opposite of tug of war: he and I were blowing into opposite ends of a paper towel tube, to see who could blast the other person off. When his lung power overpowered mine (no surprise there), a projectile that consisted of a tonsil stone about 1/4 inch in diameter from his throat nailed me in the back of my thoat. Disgusting. He did not believe me when I told him this, and ever since, I have had a problem with them. This makes me believe that tonsilloliths - or rather the propensity to form them - is something people acquire from kissing, eating/drinking other people's food, or playing the opposite of tug of war.
Until today, forty years later, I had never known the term "tonsil stones" or "tonsilloliths" and have never found anyone who had ever heard of such a problem as these smelly little fiends that you all know. I thought it was some rare condition that only I had!
I have been able to dislodge them most effectively by gargling with hot water, easiest done while in the shower. I move my throat in different positions to dislodge them while I gargle. I find this most effective in my case, but I haven't known to look for them in the crevasses of the tonsils, which I didn't really know existed.
But BETTER than that is the realization that definitely, certain types of food will provoke their formation. I find that eating dairy products will most invariably result in some of these stinky critters the next day or so. Avoiding dairy products all together, I find that I really don't get them.
Even so, I plan to try the products at Therabreath.com to completely rid myself of this ordeal, maybe for good. I bought the toothpaste because I had a persistent canker sore that seemed to get worse using the cinnamon toothpaste from a "health-conscious" company, and Dr. Katz's toothpaste happened to mention it was good for canker sores. The next day, the cankersore dramatically improved and disappeared completely within the next half day. The information on the site makes me believe his products are very effective for eliminating the CAUSES of bad breath and tonsil stones. Impressive. Check it out. And, no, I am not a shill for this company. http://www.therabreath.com/

Forget all those "remedies" these nasty little stink stones just need to be removed with a flat implement (like the opposite end of a tooth brush). Apple pressure to the underside of tonsil until stones are pushed out of crevice of crypt.

I imagine the person who commented that Doctors would routinely have one remove body parts and take pills, etc. is some kind of tree-hugging anti-everything that is not "natural" type that would rather rely upon dead sea salt gargles, herbal tinctures, faith in "God" (and maybe magical crystals) heal any illness.

People like this should not be trusted. Listen to your doctor.
