All I can tell you is that I took 10/ 500mg for chronic pain 6-7 pills a day everyday from the time of conception until delivery. The 10 is the strongest of the hydrocodone. I have fibro and was allowed to continue to take this and especially since I was already on this medication prior to getting pregnant since it could be dangerous to a unborn child for a mother to go through terrible withdrawls during pregnancy which includes all three trimesters. I had to take the hydrocodone for two of my 5 pregnancies and both of my children were born healthy at 8 and 9 lb and as healthy as the other three. As far as I know, the only risk is a baby being born with withdrawls which could be very serious. I was very worried about this and I talked to my pharmacist and she said that even the amount that I was taking was not enough to usually cause a newborn to be born addicted to the hydro. She also said that only a very small amount of that opiate actually makes it's way to the unborn child. Usually it is something like heroin that causes terrible withdrawl in newborns or maybe if you were taking it by the handfuls of probably any drug then you could run into some trouble. It seems like people and some doctors really want to scare pregnant women to the point they suffer in pain needlessly the whole nine months. You and your baby will be fine as long as you only take them as needed. I though this was a newer post. Oh well, maybe this will still help answer somebody else's question or concern.
i have two children, and not the perfect mother, but anyone who puts their child endager like that ought to have their head examined. that baby has no choice....everything you take, eat, drink, etc... that baby gets. deal with the pains its understandable in some cases, but now a days people abuse things over something that is all mental. if i could have both my kids all natural at the age of 17 and 18 and i am not in the best of health mind you then all you other women can too. your having a child wake up!!!!!as for those who want to detox, talk to a doc it could hurt your baby if you do it cold turkey because you can get deathly ill. please ladies think about that baby who has no choi ce in the matter of what you do. people abuse perscription drugs because they are addicting, so imagine how a small child feels. yeah you might not notice the side effects right away but you will when they get older trust me. hyperactivity, concentration problems, acting out etc.... this is no lie i know several people who did the same thing and have alot of behavriol issues with there children now, especially at school, home, public places and what not. another thing to think about your body weight is much more than that baby you can handle much more, you think that baby can???? be smart drugs are for thugs!!!!
I'm proud of your honesty and God be with you and your child. This is the first step to getting better. I think youre an awesome mom to want to clean yourself up.
I think it definitely depends on your doctor or state ...but I had 3 babies in Colorado and never got drug tested....I've been on Norco with all of them..about 1 pill a day, but no birth defects, no withdrawal, no drug tests...nothing. don't listen to all these people. They must have gotten tested for a reason...oh and all were on Medicaid. I do have a rx.
Some states are different than others. State of Alabama drug tests all newborns and their mothers. Social Services will get involves if there is anything illegal or unsubscribed in your system. Lortab has no known side effects to the baby. However it is possible for the baby to be born addicted. I would suggest being clean when you go to give birth to lesson this chance if they are not prescribed
It also depends on what type of insurance you have. For example if you have Medicaid they will absolutely drug test you during your regular visits and after you give birth.
I see that you posted over a year ago, so I hope that you found someone with some answers and help and I hope you and the baby are doing well. As a chronic pain patient (and 8wks preggo) I have the same concerns. Before the pregnancy I took 10/325 hydro 4x per day, 20mg methadone 2x per day, and muscle relaxers up to 3x a day.
I'm now on 5mg oxy 3x a day to replace everything I was taking before. Oxycodone is the only narcotic with a pregnancy rating B (being generally safe). Most people are surprised to know that the Tylenol in hydrocodone is more dangerous than the opiate itself. Once again I know you posted a long time ago, but I'm going to answer as if you still need an answer because there may be someone else who needs help.
You do need to get your addiction under control. Whatever you do, don't quit cold turkey. The sudden shock to your system could cause you to miscarry. You need to taper down gradually (it may help to map things out in a day-planner). If you take 5 per day, then start by cutting it back to 4 per day for a week. If you handle it well then cut down to 3 the next week and so on. If you find yourself struggling then cut down by half a pill per week. Opiates release dopamine, serotonin and endorphins in the brain (all those fun feel good chemicals) and as you wean yourself off you will feel depressed so you need to replace those chemicals that your brain is use to getting. The best way to do this is exercise (cardio especially). Exercise every day and it will make your transition so much easier (not to mention it's good for the baby).
You have a fairly mild physical dependence (if the daily amounts you gave are accurate), so tapering down may not be as scary as you think. I have no way of knowing how much of a psychological dependence you have, but I can tell you that keeping yourself busy will help. If you think about it your pregnancy may not only be your motivation to quit, but a great distraction when you're feeling tempted. When you get to the point that you can feel the baby move you won't miss the boost that the pills gave you. You'll have an even greater feeling to experience :)
