Started off many years ago as a little rash on the side of my face which didn't do much but get flaky seasonally.
Recently however, it began to spread to my right eye lid, then my left, then onto my eyebrows and under my eyes. It's beginning to form small patches further down my face. This is causing my eyes to puff up and the rashes are a clear red.
Any relief?

Hi
I am a 46-year-old male and I have the same problem. I am lactose intolerant and never eat dairy so that isn't an issue. I have experienced the facial rash/soreness/drying on several occasions and the worst was associated with eating a pack of sugar-free mints. I noticed that other incidences were associated with diet drinks. Aspartame/Nutrasweet is associated with skin reactions in many individuals. I won't speculate too much because its not well understood, but a breakdown product of aspartame may be formaldehyde. No idea why that should cause a skin reaction on the face, but the human body is a complex system. Anyway, I cut out aspartame and went four months without any problems. However, its returned this week. Its not associated with sunshine because this problem occurred ten days after I returned from three weeks in sunny Thailand.
This is definitely a food or additive allergy. I suspect I misssed some hidden aspartame in a processed food product. It crops up everywhere and it may just be down as "sweetener". I study labels very carefully to avoid lactose so I usually spot aspartame and sweeteners, but if its not mentioned what can you do? I try to avoid all processed food but sometimes life is just too busy.
Anyway, I recommend avoiding aspartame and all other sweeteners as a first step. You could try eating a pack of sugar-free mints to test my hypothesis. I find that Bio-oil is the quickest way of getting rid of the dry inflamed skin but it always takes 5 or 6 days to clear up.
Hope this helps,
Duncan

Hi my name is Cristina and I am having similar problems and have been to the dermatologist and allergist for the patch testing, which they say I am allergic to nickel, but I do not think this is what's causing my problem. I think its stress, so can you discuss further what you have done to help?

My husband was on a golf trip to Myrtle Beach and developed a forehead rash while there. The rash looks like acne. That was 2 months ago. The rash is getting worse, and now his eyelids are swollen. It's ugly. I know that this is some sort of allergic reaction. My 1st guess is drugs that he is taking. One of his prescriptions was changed in shape and form about the same time this started. The pharmacist swears that the med is the same as before. He father had the same rash in his forehead before he discovered that grapefruit and Warfarin don't mix.

Well, here I am again and have discovered that after 2 years of not using hair color, it was not the culprit after all. Within the last week or so, the rash and itching has decided to return. At this time, it has not affected my eyes/face but that may be only a matter of time. Please do not reccomend a doctor because although I work, I have no insurance. My local clinic treated it as eczema but I have had that many times, and knew differently. Their treatment did not work, only time seemed to help. It lasted about a month each episode (twice). The rash is so itchy that instead of scratching, I poured alcohol on it and found the burn was more preferable. I take no prescription meds and cannot find any reason for this condition to disappear for 2 years, and flare up out of nowhere again. I work in retail so I am visible in the public constantly but if this returns full force as before, I may have to resign from my job. Not only is it embarrassing but, I fear people will be leary of coming in contact with me. Any new and/or affordable suggestions would be appreciated.

What I found that works for me is Proactiv Clarifying Lotion. It takes a while to clear up completely, maybe several weeks or even a month. A few years ago I noticed a red dry itchy patch on my collarbone. Common sense would say to use a moisturizing lotion but that didn't work so I tried the clarifying lotion (a toner, really), which as a drying agent is counterintuitive but that's what worked. Earlier this year that dry itchy swollen rash appeared on my face! I use the clarifying lotion on my face twice a day but only in the T-zone. The rash appeared on the areas where I did not really use the lotion -- around my eyes, under the eyebrows, along the hairline and jawline. This lotion is very watery, so when using it in the area of my eyes I first sprinkle it on my fingers and tap my fingers together until it starts to dry up a bit and become thick and sticky. This way it is less likely to run into my eyes. The clarifying lotion is drying to the skin, so after applying it I used Proactiv's Day Lotion on my face and Proactiv's Eye Serum around the eye area. I do this twice a day after cleansing my face. Less often than that and the rash comes back. A few people on this thread mentioned Miconazole which is an antifungal used for athlete's foot, jock itch and vaginal yeast infections. I tried that and it made the rash feel much better but did nothing to reduce the redness or swelling.

I live in San Francisco and have been dealing with the itchiness around my eyes, ears, mouth line, eyebrow and hairline. I spoke with a doctor and she called it seborrheic dermatitis. I don't have the redness anymore but the itchiness is still in the same places. the obvious answer that is out there is that I have some kind of yeast issue and I need to completely eliminating out of my diet what yeast thrives on sugar and yeast. i am going to try and give this a try.

my doctor gave me athletes foot crème and hydrocortisone to mix together and put it moderately on the itchy/red areas, this seemed to work to get rid of the redness and bumps, but the itchiness is still there.
