I was so lucky to had come across this post a couple of months ago. I never would post anything but I hope this will help others. I almost feel into depression cause I thought I was doomed to ever have another sex partner again due to the embarrassment from the smell of having BV. The doctor had assured me it was not Mirena causing the BV. But once treated for BV, I had sex and the foul fish smell came back (in the midst of having sex and I just wanted to shrivel up and die). Be warned, the doctor say you can take the meds for 3 days or until the smell goes away, don't take this advise, finish your meds for at least up to 5 days! I thought it was gone because I didn't smell it anymore, so wrong! If there is just a hint of it that you didn't smell, it comes back during intercourse. Otherwise BV comes back within the next day or so. I stopped having sex. I had turned down dates with men who looked like they came out of a GQ magazine. I had lost my MOJO and confidence! I thought my life was over until I decided to remove Mirena as a last resort if it will help to end my BV. Once removed, I had BV from the residual bleeding but I had to give my body some time to get back to normal. I took my meds fully and was a little hesitant to have sex again but one month later, I had to try...and guess what, JACKPOT! No BV during or after sex!!! But before I ran out naked jumping for joy, I had to test the theory one week later AND.....NO BV!!!!! I've regained my MOJO! I can conquer the world once again!!!!! muhahahahah......

I got my mirena inserted in 10/3/11 the first couple of months was as I expected... The bleeding cramping & maybe weight gain... The last couple of days I've been experiencing a very bad fishy smell in my discharge... It even goes thru my clothes... I'm a very clean person too... & I believe that my boyfriend has noticed the smell too... It's very unconfortable... I was thinking it was just the semen leaking out but this is like the second time it happen... Should I go to the doctor to get a prescription or should I just let it go away by it self? Idk nothing about this :( that's why I'm researching...

Hi,

I have had my Mirena for about 2 years. Before Mirena I would randomly get BV or UTI's fairly regularly (about once every couple of months) and they are AWFUL! They are so painful, but it's just how my body has always been. Once the Mirena was put in...I didn't attribute this until I started reading blogs, but it's gotten SO MUCH WORSE! I have a UTI followed by a Yeast Infection every time I have sex. So I basically stopped having sex. It's the worst! I'm actually heading to the doctor's office today to have it taken out. Thank you for your post. Makes me feel so much better that I'm not alone.

Hi, I'm 49 and had the Mirena placed on March 29 this year. I have already got a BV, 10 days after! so far I've just used OTC meds for it, but just made an appointment with my OB GYN who I wasnt supposed to see until a month after. I'm sure my body is reacting to this device and I'm sure I want it removed. I'm also sure, she will say give it 3 months! I'm not waiting that long!!

I too have the IUD and I just got treated for bacterial vaginosis, My doctor told me that my iud acts as a hub for infections cause of the string or wire that hangs from it... After i got done with my treatment about a week passed and I thought I had a yeast infection but now i think i have BV again... I too am questioning if i should get it removed...

JUST A HEADS UP WARNING ABOUT STERILITY AND INFECTED UTERUS.

I had the Mirena IUD...I had it in for about three years. I did get BV over and over....only for me, it smelled musty (I now know this was the bacteria that attacked my uterus).

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL.

One day I woke up with severe abdominal pain...I wasn't sure what it was, so I let it go for a couple days. By the time I got to the doctor's I couldn't even straighten up and I had a high fever.

I had an infection of the uterus. PID. They gave me a shot and I got better--but now my chances of being sterile are dramatically increased.

They tested me for STI's--I had been with my partner for four years, monogamously. I had NO STI's.  Basically, this means that I got an infected uterus because of the Mirena....because it allowed normal bacteria to climb into my uterus and infect it...bacteria that's usually not harmful to the uterus.

I took the Mirena out and haven't had BIV or PID since.

The GYN's say Mirena doesn't cause infections of the uterus, but I got one that I would not have gotten without Mirena...so I had to learn the hard way. I pass this onto you because I wish I had listened to my body earlier.

HI LADIES I HAVE HAD MIRENA ON FOR 8 MONTHS NOW AND I CAN NOW RELATE TO ALL THE POST OF OTHER WOMAN

GOING THROUGH THE SAMETHING. I STARTED GETTING INFECTIONS AFTER HAVING IT ON FOR 6 MONTHS AT FIRST IT

WAS GREAT BECAUSE MY HUSBAND AND I COULD HAVE SEX WORRY FREE ABOUT GETTING PREGO, UNTILL I ONE DAY

ME AND MY HUSBAND HAD JUST FINISHED HAVING SEX AND I NOTICED A FAUL SMELL AND WHITE CHUNKS ON ME AND

ON HIM AT FIRST I DIDNT THINK NOTHING OF IT TILL MY HUSBAND COMPLAINED ABOUT A BURNING SENSETATION ON HIS

PENIS. I WENT TO MY OBGYN AND I WAS TOLD I HAD AN UTI AND DIDNT HAVE SYMPTOMS THEN AFTER THAT DAY I HAVENT

BEEN ABLE TO GET RID OF IT. IM GOING ON MY THIRD MONTH AND STILL HAVE IT BUT NOT AS BAD BUT THIS IS SUCH A

FRUSTRATING SITTUATION THAT I JUST DECIDED TO TAKE IT OUT (LORD KNOWS WHAT'S IN THE FUTURE FOR ME) MY DOCTORS

ALSO KEEPED TELLING ME IT WILL GO AWAY BUT THEY DONT UNDERSTAND HOW UNCOMFORTABLE AND PAINFUL IT IS FOR ME

AND MY HUSBAND.

I LOVE THE IDEA OF THE NOT GETTING PRENGNANT PART BUT BY MY DOCTOR FORGOT TO METION THIS PART. I KNOW EVERY

WOMAN HAS DIFFRENT REACTION TO IT BUT AT THIS POINT AFTER READING OTHER WOMAN LIKE ME HAVE BEEN GOING

TO GO THROUGH THE SAME ISSUES. IM NO ONE TO TELL OTHER WOMAN NOT TO TRY IT OUT BUT JUST BE READY FOR THE

SIDE AFFECTS THE DOCTORS FORGET TO MENTION AT THE MOMENT. JUST DO YOUR REASERCH GIRLS AND STAY SAFE AND HELTHY.

Ladies, have you heard of MedWatch? Google "MedWatch reporting by consumers." You will find a way to report these side effects to the FDA. Print the form, and take it to your MD. MDs and their staff may not be very cooperative, as this process is time consuming for them. But guess what . . . chronic yeast infections are time consuming. Refilling meds monthly is time consuming. The damage these symptoms have caused to your self esteem is immeasurable. The stress this has put on marriages is immeasurable. I have had my Mirena 18 months. The yeast infections occur monthly. Like you, my MD tells me repeatedly, "Probably just a coincidence." However, one day, when I called to get another prescription, my nurse said to me, "Do you have the Mirena? I am receiving alot of calls like this from those patients." The nurses know . . . we know . . . the FDA should know.

OMG! I'm so glad I ran across this post because I'm having the same problem!! Since Ive had my IUD I've had about 5 BV and two times after each BV I had yeast infections from the antibiotics! I don't have the Mirena but I have the Copper IUD> It's like once the BV is gone, a month later after intercourse I smell it again! I keep apologizing to my bf about sex because I'm not even into it anymore because I can smell it!!! I don't know if he can but I'm pretty sure he can!!!  I'm done! I just called my doctor today and asked for antibiotics to treat the BV but I am going in to see her this coming up week and will ask to remove the IUD and go back on birth control pills! The only problem is I get ill easily off pills so I will need a low does one or something! not sure what I'm going to do..... Again I think this is what is causing the BV Because before IUD I never had an infection ever!!!! and NEVER felt self conscious of my vagina. Im even embarassed to tell my boyfriend about it!! I'm scared of what he'll say!!!!

Hi Ladies,

I suffered some of your same problems and want to tell you my miracle. I always had yeast aand BV it was horrible and started a perpetual cycle. Go to whole foods or some vitamin store and get a ton of pro-biotics. Your body is getting infections because the PH is off and you don't have enough good bacteria. Get the pro-biotics that are in the refrigerated section because they are live. It will not cure you if you are infected not but once you get your infection cleared up it will prevent you from getting more infections by putting your body back in balance. I hope this helps!

I have been wondering lately if my IUD was causing me to get UTI's as well. It seems like every since I had one put in I have had a UTI consistently. I Know that they are not something my lover could have passed to me, because I asked my doctor, and they said no way. The problem is I don't get the usual symptoms, I don't get a discharge, or the smell, as far as I know. The way I know I have the infection is that I have a pain in my stomach, and in my lower back, that won't stop. The most recent time this occured I bent over and found myself in unbearable pain, it was so bad I could not sleep, and its really got me concerned. Now after reading your story I feel very strongly that this is being caused by my IUD, thank you for sharing your story.
