Hello, I have had a the Mirena for 4.5 yrs. I have recently tied the frequent occurrences of yeast infections with it. I have always been quite sensitive 'down there' and never connected the dots until my boyfriend did the research. I have recently started taking acidophollis pills to counter the issue and I am successful so far. I have only experiences a BV infection once. Only in the last two and a half years I have been having unprotected sex and the pro-biotic has helped tremendously. I was seriously considering getting another Mirena next year but I am now second guessing that notion. On the other hand I do have to say that I have experienced no other side effects. As a matter of fact, in the past I had nothing but positives to say about Mirena. My periods have completely stopped there has been no break through bleeding for at least 2 yrs. No weight gain and no marked moodiness. I hope this helps someone.

yes it can you should google search side effects of mirena and the percents given are only calculated on maybe 100 people at most, that's not enough to be accurate.

I am now on my second infection with the Paraguard. I was reading your post and nodding my head in agreement, especially when you mentioned the thick white discharge after you and your husband had sex, because for as long as I have been in my own body, I know that sometimes if I get overly excited or right around my time of the month, I will have a slightly thicker discharge, but then a day after my discharge, my shooting pains into my right leg started and then my discharge started being repeitive again like it was before back in January when I first had the infection, and now, there's a slight odor starting AGAIN. Smh... It's really sad, because I have a lot of allergies to other birth control methods and chose this because the copper was supposed to be safer for me. But since I've had it in.. which will be since November. I have found I have had more problems than when I didn't have the IUD in. Go figure.

I have never been so happy to find this site!!! I have had my Mirena for about 7 months now....and it has been nothing shy of a nightmare! I am on my second BV in a 2 week period! Not to mention that today is day 13 that I have been on my period. I thought the Mirena was going to be the answer to all my prayers...no more periods, effective birth control, etc. Was I wrong or what. I am getting it taken out and I will go back on the pill. The smell alone from these BV's is more than I can handle. It's awful! Bye Bye Mirena! Thanks for nothing! lol.

I had the mirena IUD for 3 years with no problems, then all of a sudden on the 4th year I started getting recurrent urinary tract infections and if they werent caught on the first two days it quickly spread to my kidneys. After having 7 kidney infections in one year, they finally yanked the IUD. 5 months later I got pregnant, at 19, decided I was too young got my IUD back in, this one has been painful has heck and not to mention three weeks later, I have another urinary tract infection!!! So I guess I've got to go back to something else now!

I've had my Mirena in for a little over 4 years now, everything has been great, I had weight gain but nothing more than I expect from regular birth control pills (different prescriptions gave me weight gain, weight loss, whatever; it's hormones what do you expect). Never had any problems, no period, LOVED it. Until the past 3 months, that is. Now, all the sudden, I've got horrible cramps, brown blood at absolutely random times at any given time during the month and a rotting flesh smell that makes me want to vomit. I'm going to see my gyn next week, pregnancy tests at home have all been negative so I know it's not that. But I can't take this pain and the god-awful smell. The first 4 years were just awesome though! I'm wondering if, for me anyways, it's just the amount of years it's been there? Really hope it's all quickly resolved though :(

I want to thank you for being so honest about this issue, I too have the same problem. Good luck getting my doc to tell me its the IUD thats causing the problem.

did you have the mirena taken out? I just realized that my symptoms started about 6 months after I got Mirena put in... I want it out! AMcalling to make and appt. with doc first thing. Doen't know what to do for does BV go away after removal? I read somewhere that it DOESNT! freaking out. will this recur forever? hoping that I can do what earlier post suggested: take tindamax right before removal and then try and build up good bacteria before during and forever after. let me know if yo had taken out if you had any success. Any birth control suggestions? have read in BV treatment literature that the pill can cause it? in disbelief. How can doctors put this thing in knowing that it can cause such horrific problems?

I just went to my gyno and my gyno told me that it was recently found that Bv along with other std's can live in the strings and travel up the uterus... that's y infections are sooo re-occurring. I scheduled my appt next week already to take out my mirena

I have had the Mirena 1yr in April '11...well I had laparascopic surgery this year in May due to cramping everyday for 8 1/2 mths straight. Gyno sd going to look for Endometriosis. Sd if it is then she would want me to keep Mirena in as it would lessen the cramps & make it minimal for it to come back if it even does. But, if not Endo then she'd want Mirena out as its a foreign object in my uterus & its trying to cramp the IUD out...but sure enough after surgery, was told I was at 1st stage of Endo. I had very lil bit behind my uterus...so it was caught in time. I have 1 child not planning on having more but I didn't want it to be where there's no choice in the matter that I couldn't have anymore kids. But my prob now is I think I may have another Bacteria virus as I have as very strong odor(foul really)...even after I wash down there really good with Dove soap as I use body soap for rest of body. But maybe 1 or 2 hrs after shower, the smell comes back. I've had 1 yeast infection, 1 BV since I've had Mirena, which I think I may call dr as I'm 90% sure its a BV!

I am very grateful for your help! I have been having the same type of symptoms. I have had my IUD since 2009, at first the pain was incredible. I went to the doctor who told me the IUD would naturally try to expel itself and that it was normal. I dealt with the pain and chalked it up as a hazard of the newly inserted device. These cramps have decreased significantly, although once in awhile a pain will hit me that will stop me in my tracks.

Just this last November I started to get BV. I couldn't understand why. Everytime I had sex I would get BV. I have never had it before. This last time I was tested for it, they tell me I don't have it, yet it smells like something is rotting inside me. I got this round of BV after a wet smear. I have been unwilling to have sex because of the horrid smell. The last time I did I could smell it during the act which completely ruined it. I am a very clean person too, to the point of paranoia, so this has me very depressed, I feel disgusting.

I am hoping to get this thing removed as soon as possible. I can not live like this. This is ridiculous.

Thank you again for your honesty and sharing your story, I needed it!!

Dont use the AZO yeast everyday!!! I was doing this and after a while your body gets used to it and it doesnt work anymore. I've had my mirena just over 2 years now and I constantly have yeast infections. I've used multiple creams and pills, doctors dont understand. The smell is gross and the 'clumps' of discharge and the itchiness....not worth it. I'm removing mine asap. I read somewhere that the strings keep yeast on them..EWW! But I would reccomend if you're having this problem to take it out!!!
