i agree with all and after reading this i just made my appointment to remove this damn thing. oct 6 can come sooner!! >;)
I feel terrible that you had such a bad experience with it but yeah, I think it would be a good idea to rule out all the issues htat might be causing yeast infections. Other than that, how are you doing?
So pleased I found this site, I have been treated for thrush these last 2 years.
Last but one urine sample said virginal infection was given a thrush treatment by Dr.
Last week had urine and virginal swab taken, results came back as a yeast type infection.
Guess what I am now on the mini-pill and the Mirena coil comes out in 2 weeks. Hallelujah

I thought it was just me. I have had the mirena since Nov. 5, 2008. I am constantly swollen, itchy, burning, discharging all the time. Now it is to the point where my husband and I can't even have sex because it burns his penis like its eating away at the skin. They keep telling me that I just have a vaginal infection but I believe I am having an alergic reaction. I am always in pain. I have a lot of discharge and a lot of discomfort. I had to wear a pad for about 9 month and sometimes the discharge is sooo heavy. the doctor just told me it was normal and said to wear a tampon. now i am to the point I can't wear a tampon because it makes me burn and swell up. and the pads now irritate me and i can't wear them.. what to do???
I had the IUD put in, in 2004. Started being dripping wet all the time with a smell that i could smell through my clothes that wasnt fishy like but more of almost pee smell. Hard to describe- not horrible but not fresh. I went to several dr.s complaining and they swore this was not the issue. I finally demanded that it come out. They were explaining this is an expensive piece equipment to remove just because im uncofortable.???? really do i care? I had it taken out and it helped drasticaly but in my case the damage has been done. Sometimes i am fine with no issues but majority of the time the wetness and small smelly are always there. I have found that the metro gel that you insert helps but clumps up to white discharge which is not attractive and only last until i have sex even when using a condom. I have been to serveral dr.s again and they all run the test and say its just a touch of bacteria and nothing they can do. that that is normal. I am miserable. I feel like this is a curse from God for having sex before marriage. I wish i could take it all back. I feel like there has to be some solution out there. its just a matter of getting the right dr. who knows what is actually causing this problem. I agree take it off the market and i wouldnt recommend anyone ever getting the IUD. :-(
hi ladies, so i have a question. i got the Mirena in May of 09. I didnt notice a smell until about a month ago :$ I have googled and googled what could be the cause of the smell and many people said that its cause of semen or i could have a yeast infection. ive NEVER had a yeast infection before, the only symptom i have is the smell...should i try monistat?
i have had the mirena for a little over a year now and i have had about 5 urinary infection in the last 6 months. Thats including the UTI i woke up with this morning. My gyn hasnt said much either way about whether or nit it is the mirena but i know that it has to be. I am a clean person and i never had these problems before. I have had 3 UTI and 2 OF the bacterial infections. I am seriously considering having it taken out. On top of that i have pain that comes and goes. Sometimes me and my fiance have to stop having sex because it hurts so bad. That the doctor has said has nothing to do with the Mirena but wonce again im pretty sure that it does!!!!
i have had the mirena for 2 years now. i havent had a period for the 2 years ive been on it.I recently started bleeding along strong vaginal odors. The odor will not go away. Any suggestions or comments?
OMG!!! This is exactly my same story. I just got back from the GYN and she just told me the thing ( It has nothing to do with Mirena). I can't stand this smell anymore! Neither can my husband, it's gotten to the point that we rather just stay away from each other. I've had the Mirena for 10 mnths and i've been getting yeast infections every three weeks. I'm soooo glad i read this ! I'Ts coming out tommorrow!Your post was really helpful :-D !
will planned parenthood pay for a BV test if i got it from my iud and im on the take charge program?
There are many natural ways in curing yeast infections because they don't just remove the symptoms like creams do, they help you get your natural body balance back. The implantation of Mirena often causes a microbiological imbalance in the vaginal area and yeast infections occur and simply wan't go away no matter how you treat them.

Hi!! I am so very happy to have finally researched this problem and to find that I am not alone. This Mirena needs to have awareness brought to these horrific side effects!! I am 34 and had mine inserted over 3 years ago when my son was 6 weeks. My OB assured me that it was a low dose of hormones and generally no side effects were caused. I noticed that my acne from pregnancy did not clear up after the birth and actually has gotten much worse even though I have never been one to break out. I get bloated and have broke out with a cold sore every month since insertion. I didn't realize this at first but I too had the fishy smell and am a VERY clean person, I never dousche or stick anything else up there, I am quite knowledgable of the female and my own body. I also noticed that after having sex the smell got stronger but thought that it was the sperm or something. I have never had BV before so this was new to me. I recently went through a break up and started seeing a new guy and low and behold there was the fish stink after sex, SO EMBARRASSING!!!! This is when I started researching and came across a ton of articles like this one. I have had BV constantly for the last 3 years....I use a syringe with 1/3 water and 2/3 hydrogen peroxide and "rinse" the BV out of my vagina when I notice the smell and it takes care of it until it comes back a few weeks to a month later also the RePHresh works but is very expensive to use constantly. I would rather take the pill every day than go through all of this. I didn't realize the Mirena was causing me so many problems until I started putting it all together. I have an appt tomorrow to get this stupid thing removed so I really hope that my body goes back to normal soon after.....ladies does the BV go away after removal?? I will post my findings after mine is removed!! Good luck to all of you
I am in the same boat as many others with BV that is ongoing. I am on my second Mirena and in the 8th year of usage. The BV was not an issue with the first one, but has been out of control recently. The Mirena itself is not causing the problem, instead it's the pH imbalance from the IUD interrupting the natural cycle. I have not had a period in the entire 8 years, and my pH is so acidic that it is not even registering on the charts. The high acidity makes is easy for bad bacteria to overgrow and then the discharge and odor are present. I have used a few remedies that offer some relief. Baking soda baths work well if done regularly, or the product RePhresh - a gel insert over the counter works great if you use it every 3 days or when the problem occurs. I love my Mirena and can deal with the other BV symptoms. But I guess it's not for everyone. Hope this helps.
i have had the mirena for over a year now and just recently started having the itching and a slight oder i went to the store and got stuff to treat a yeast infection lets hope thats my proublem and not bv can afford to go to the doctor but other then just recently i have never had any proublem i love my mirena
I had the mirena put in almost two years ago now; however, I just made the appointment to have it taken out today. Since it was put in, I have had constant and debilitating cramps...some days I can't even move they are so bad. In addition, I have had constant yeast infections since it was put in. I often have a thick white discharge. At times it is also a yellowish colour (which is when the stagnant odour is at its worst). I too am a very clean person yet I feel soooooooo dirty. This has affected my sex life greatly. I would advise women not to use the mirena iud as a form of birth control as the side effects completely outweigh any benefit!!!!!!!!!
