OMG I HAD MIRENA FOR 4YEARS WITHOUT A PROBLEM THEN SUDDENLY I HAD SEVERE MYSTERIOUS PAIN THAT COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED IT FELT AS THOUGH MY CERVIX WAS DILATING ( I HAD A D/C YEARS AGO FOR A MISCARRIAGE AND THEY DILATED MY CERVIX IT WAS WORSE THAN LABOUT ITSELF. AFTER MANY ULTRA SOUNDS AND PAP TESTS THEY FOUND NOTHING THEN THE FOUL ORDOUR BEGAN AS YOU MENTIONED ESPECIALLY DURING SEX SO EMBARRASSING, I FINALLY ASKED MY GP TO REMOVE THE MIRENA SHE DIDN'T THINK IT WAS RELATED BUT AGREED TO DO SO, WHILE SHE WAS TAKING IT OUT SHE NOTICED A STICKY YELLOW DISCHARGE WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE A YEAST INFECTION, I HAD NO SYMPTOMS BUT ABOUT 6MOS AFTER IT WAS REMOVED THE ODOUR WENT AWAY AS WELL AS THE MYSTERIOUS PAIN BUT I'VE NOW HAD A YEAST INFECTION FOR 2YEARS SOLID!!!!!!!!!! I'VE BEEN TO MANY SPECIALISTS 3 TO BE EXACT WHO HAVE WASHED THEIR HANDS OF ME AND TESTED ME FOR EVERYTHING IMAGINABLE. I AM USING BORIC ACID SUPPOSITORIES TO AVOID GOING COMPLETELY INSANE BUT THEY ONLY MASK THE FACT THAT THE INFECTION IS STILL THERE. IT HAS AFFECTED MY ABILITY TO ENJOY MY KIDS, MY HUSBAND, DAY TO DAY LIFE THINGS I HAVE BECOME SERIOUSLY DEPRESSED AND BELIEVE DESPITE NO MEDICAL SUPPORT THESE YEAST INFECTIONS ARE CAUSED BY THE MIRENA.

DO YOU STILL GET INFECTIONS NOW THAT YOU HAVE HAD IT REMOVED? ME AS WELL AS YOU TOOK TOO MANY ANTIBIOTICS WHICH IM' SURE LOWERED MY IMMUNE SYSTEM, NOT TO MENTION I GET CHRONIC BLADDER INFECTIONS SINCE I HAD THE MIRENA TOO THAT'S ANOTHER ISSUE I EXPERIENCED SO IT'S TWOFOLD THE ANTIBIOTICS I TAKE FOR THE BLADDER INFECTIONS DON'T HELP MY BATTLE WITH THE YEAST INFECTIONS. ANY HELP OUT THERE!!! FRUSTRATED MOTHER OF 2, 39YRS OLD!!!!!!!!!

I too have had my I.U.D for 2 1/2 years, I have had multiple yeast infections and I think i have BV now. Which is why i found this forum in the first place. I hate pills can't remember to take them everyday plus they make me sick, and now im looking for alternatives but the ring and the patch have had multi death law suits and thats really scary. I came across a posting of birth control shots for MEN!! That's right ladies for Men now they can share the responsibility along with us. I think its time! I think that many womens lives could have been spared if we had introduced this BC for Men a long time ago!! We share our lives and this is one responsibility that should be shared as well. I think its over in England right now havent found anything suggesting that we are working on this BC here in the states sooo untill then I want this yeast infecting, pelvic inflamating, oder causing, ovarian cyst creating, foreign thing out. But what are the safe alternatives to this?????????? The shot maybe???????

I've had my Mirena for 1 year now and I too have had this problem with the nasty odor. Now, to make matters worse, for the last three months I bleed for two to three weeks each month. This was supposed to make things better for my husband and I but between the odor and the excessive bleeding, intimacy has gone to extremely minimal. My appoint with my GYN is set for Thursday and I am ordering her to take it out (they told me it would just be a consult first but I'm going to demand it be taken out that day!)

I've had my IUD for over a year now. I just got mine removed today because my husband and I want to try for another baby. I had an annual pap done today as well and I came back to have BV. The doctor told me this is a normal side effect with the mirena. Now I have to take antibiotics for 7 days. I asked a couple of my other friends who have an IUD and they also had the same problem. Besides this, this was my only complaint I've had about Mirena.

Three Step Attack Plan to Battle BV:
Step1- Rinse out the vagina daily with a hydrogen peroxide douche.
Step 2- Take vaginal Acidophilus supplements.
Step 3- Take 800-1600mcg of Folic Acid daily.
You will experience immediate relief from itching, discharge, wetness and pain.
Douche recipe- (relieve itching and fishy smell with 3% hydrogen peroxide. The peroxide kills “bad” bacteria, but not “good”. ) 1/5cup 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1/5cup DISTILLED water. (tap water contains fluoride and chlorine which will kill “good” bacteria.) Get a regular vinegar/water douche, pour out the contents, rinse, and fill with this new mixture. Lie down in the tub, insert contents, wait 5 mins, rinse with DISTILLED water. Repeat the entire process once more. IMEDIATELY after (just after the “bad” bacteria have been eradicated) insert one acidophilus suppository into the vagina. Do the douching process twice a day (wash/rinse/wash/rinse…wash/rinse/wash/rinse) insert the acidophilus once-twice a day. Read the instructions on the package. Do the douches for 5 days. Use the entire pack of acidophilus. Keep the suppositories in the fridge! You can purchase them at the health food store. Folic Acid is important! Folic Acid/B vitamin deficiency cause BV!

Also- Douching is never a good idea.(other than with the 3% hydrogen peroxide/distilled water.) Douching may disrupt the fragile balance of natural organisms in the vagina which may lead too bacterial or yeast infection and may also cause the spread of infection up into the reproductive tract where it can do damage. Also, do not put anything foreign into the vagina (other than condoms) i.e.- spermicide, soap/body wash/feminine wash, premixed douche, "odor eliminating" suppositories (they look like Listerine breath strips or children's medicine strips)...etc. Also, you should not allow sperm into your vagina, unless you are trying to get pregnant. Sperm does disturb the ph balance of the vagina, and can cause BV.

I have had my Mirena for ! 1.2 and havnt really had issues until about 4 months ago or so. I Continuously keep getting yeast infections and UTIs and sometimes i have slight bleeding as though my body is trying to have a period or something and then alot of brown discharge. No its a lot of dark yellow clumpy, like cottage cheese texture discharge and Ive had alot of pain in my right ovary area these past few months also, but my OB says its probably from my c-section scar. Im going to call the doctor first thing monday, but i mean what could this be does anyone have any idea for me? :-(

As many have state as I type this I have another one. I will be having this thing out ASAP tried of the phone calls to the dr and telling me its typical for females to get this, they forget to mention its common for females to have BV with the mirena. Thank you all for writing it on this wall I feel so much better knowing that there is nothing wrong with me but the mirena!!!

I just want to thank all the women for sharing their stories, it really helps to know others can understand what I'm going through. I've had the mirena for 4 years now. I have had BV 4 times now, and from that smell and same discharge, I still have it! UGHHHHH!! I'm sick of going through this. I'm sick of going to the gynecologist, and them looking at you like your doing something wrong! I'm outraged, by the number of women on this site alone, all saying the same things and the medical community not even acknowledging what we are all saying! This cannot be right. I will be calling first thing in the morning to have this thing out of me, I just want to be healthy again. Thank you Ladies for sharing all your stories, I wish we could do more about this.

OMG!!!! i have had this IUD for over a year and every time I complained about the foul smell it was just treated and forgotten. Well i am done with this IUD because prior to having it inserted I didn't have any odors like this and might I add how FOUL the smell is after intercourse that my husband even said to remove it! Thanks for sharing your story i thought I was crazy for thinking the smell could come from a foreign object being placed inside of me. Thanks so much!

I am also a victim of the Mirena. I had mines put in about 8 months ago and for the first month it was ok, but then I started to notice an order. This was unusual for me because I'm a clean person and I pay close attention to my body and I had never experienced this before. So when I went to the doctor, she said I had a yeast infection. Cool, she gave me a prescription. But soon after I finish the same odor appeared again with this brown discharge; not to add that the odor was stronger than it was the first time. To make things even worse having sex just makes it worse. I had also noticed having some severe cramps too. It feels like I have a never ending foul smelling yeast infection all the D time. I think if this is causing so many people these problems, it should be taken off the market or this information should be explain to you before they suggest that you get it. Here I am 8 months later and who knows how many $20 co pays I spent and none of my doctors even suggested that it might be the Mirena. I mean, you have to go through this short BUT painful procedure to get it done just to go back to the doctor within a few months to take it out and go through the pain again. I am very disappointed! I thought once I got the Mirena it would be smooth sailing, little did I know--I was in for a bumpy ride. Well ladies, that's my story, so for now I stuck will take pills anyway (antibiotics this is) and creams until my next visit to get it taken out next month. The things we have to go through. I need some of them researchers to find something for the men to prevent pregnancy. LOL :O

UNBELIEVABLE!! I have had my IUD for 2 and 1/2 years now and I have had a yeast infection every month since. My doctor told me I have chronic yeast and put me on antibiotics on a weekly basis to be continued indefinitely. And she told me I eat too much sugar which was most-likely the main source of the problem. Maybe I do eat too much sugar, but before I got this Mirena I only got yeast infections like twice a year, not every other month. I'm so glad I came across this post. I must admit, I'm a little upset because I've been going from doctor to doctor over the past 2 years trying to figure out why I get so many yeast infections and so much itching even when I don't have yeast. I'm planning to have my mirena removed as well as soon as I read up on alternatives.
