My husband had lipomas since he was 17 years old. He has them all over the body. Recently he changed the doctor and new one said that they has to be removed. He is worried that they affect his nervouse system??? He has them on arms back mostly. My husband says that some of lipomas are uncomfortable and painful. When does this disease transform into a surgical necessity? Does this disease progress into a more serious disease, like cancer?

There is a disease called Dercum's disease. It is characterized by multiple painful lipomas. It sound to me like your husband has it. Although it has been associated with weakness, fatigue, emotional and cognitive changes in some cases, fortunately there is no known association with other neurological symptoms. lipomas themselves are not cancerous and do not necessitate surgical removal. There is a disease called liposarcomas which are fatty malignant tumors, but you will have to see an internist for further evaluation.
