My one lung is dead :-(
Reply

It has been 31/2 months since my husband's right lung was removed. He is doing okay. He is 58. He is complaining of what he describes as a tightness in that side of his chest, and has lost a taste for many things he used to love. He has been back to his job for a while. No more smoking. No pain pills. No inhaler, oxygen, nothing. He is in great physical shape, and has gained back the weight he needed after losing it shortly before and after surgery. By early evenings he is totally wiped out!

My question and concern from others out there in cyber land is: Will the pressure in his chest subside? Will his taste buds return to normal? How important is it for him to walk and exercise? Will he continue to feel so tired all the time?

I am praying for your friend. My dad has one lung since the other did not develop. He is 79 and recovering from emergency surgery and thus is how they discovered the one healthy lung. He is now weaning off the vent and I appreciate your prayer or health intention for him

Ok I was also born with one lung and it has caused multiple issues as a child and a few as a young adult but my main issue is some times I have such a hard time breathing I start to shake and throw up but reading these make me wonder if it's not normal any advice?

I lost one lung in a car accident, and boy do I miss, it, I feel out of breath, and anytime I catch a cold, or the flu or even making whoopie with my loved one I feel I have run a mile non stop at full pelt. I am forever on antibiotics, and coughing.

Well people with one Lung can live a normal life but they have to be careful to not exercise too hard because it will put pressure on the Lung that is left. Both the Lungs work together when you are doing hard exercise and they can cope but with one Lung, it would be difficult for it to cope woth exercise.

Okay.. My name is Sofia, I'am 11 years old and I have only 1 lung working since I was a child. My father was really upset because my left stomach was hurting. When we went to the doctor, the doctor said I have Pneumonia.. And I was confused because I don't understand what is Pneumonia is. We went to the emergency room because my left stomach was in pain already, the doctor said I have a water in my left lung and It has a wound. I spent 1 year in hospital, my other doctor said that we need to remove the left lung and replace it, I was afraid because I'm really skinny and unhealthy. While my other doctor said that I will live with only medicines. I followed the other doctor because It was a right choice to drink medicines and live with it because I don't really need to remove my left lung to live fully. Living with a 1 lung is very hard and depressing. :(

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I hope your Dad is OK. I had 2 lobes removed from my right lung when I was 26, I'm 54 now and have never really had any problems. I hope your Dad's surgery went as well. PS, I am and always have been a non-smoker, so the remaining lung at least has that going for it.

I had lung cancer. I had a tumor that spread to the out side lining of the lungs. They where going to remove the lower part of the lung but ended up removing the whole thing. They told me that pulmonary exercise is really important. They said the space fills in with fluid and the parts around start to move in to fill that empty space. The right lung now. is getting larger. With the exercises, it is expanding my right lung. They said I could get off the oxygen after awhile. It has been emotional for me. I have to keep a strong outlook on it. That way, I can work hard and make a fullfilling life.

Hi,

My name is Aran and i had my left lung removed at birth in june 1977, i am 38 next month, as far as i am aware i am the first child to survive this operation in Austrtalia. ( thanks to Dr. Craig Mallis and Dr. Martin Glasson).

People always ask me what it is like to have one lung?

To be honest it was removed when I was just  8 hours old, so I ask what is it like to breath with two?

does it hinder the way I live?

i was told i would never be able to walk as there would be insuficiant oxegen suply to the muscles.

well I kayak, Swim, rock climb, soccer, martial arts (granted i protect the left side more as a broken rib punturing the only good lung would be problematic) running in sprints is ok for the first 75 metres then the musscles start to fatuige and can be a challenge to suply the areobic muscle and the anarobic muscle at the same time. tha only other thing i can not do is scuba dive. Dr's say as i have had surgery on the chest it is an automatic no dive (not so much to do with the lung being able to coupe with the possitive pressure sky diving is fine as it is negitive presure not that i have tried it.

there are two ways to look at the situation the first is:

Poor me i had a lung taken out or bourn with one lung... woh is the world i need special exemptions wrap me in cottom wool

or

get out there and try it it is incredable what the human body can addapt to so the choice is up to you. Let the world pass ou by or get amunst it.

I am so glad I found this website. I am an 8 year lung cancer survicor. I lost 60% of my upper right lobe. The cancer was a small 3cm. Nodule. I was lucky no chemo or radiation. Breathing is sometimes labored for me especially walking up and down stairs last week, we found another 1.8 cm on whats left of the lower right lobe. I must fo through the whole blessed surgical procedure to get at that nodule. If its cancer the rest of rhe lobe will be removed. I will live the rest of my life with one lung. Your stories are precious to me. The doctor says the left lung will expand almost like a rubberband eventually. I might have ro be on oxygen until the remaining lung starts to expand and compensate for the loss of its "partner" i know Imwill experience more shortness of breath but its that oxygen thing thats starting to make me nervous. I am 70'years old and I hope i am not sounding like an old fool. Will i be able to live alone right after surgery thanks fto anyone who responds
