I'm 21 just had my right lung removed 4 week ago due too an infection called Panton valentine leukicidin staphylococcus aeurus and it was very hard at the beginning I couldn't stand up without getting out breath my mum had to shower me but now 4 week on can do normal things for myself but not for along time but you can live a normal life the surgeon said to me and my family

My left lung stopped working for unknown reasons and was basically just an infection playground, so at age 16 I had it removed. That was 9 years ago. I get short of breath easier than most people (though some of that's asthma related), but I can bike and walk fast (though running is hard) and do physical work and generally live a normal life. My right lung actually expanded a bunch to compensate (though that might not be the case for an older patient, but he'll still breathe much easier, I remember waking up from surgery and not having the wet, gurgling breathing I had grown so used to, such a difference!)

I ve been unable to inflate my left lung for five years after a motorcycle accident . I have difficulty walking but cycle everywhere, taking care not to push it as I get dfizzy and black out . I'm middle aged but otherwise physically fit and unfortunately still a modest ciggerette smoker.
I have problems with my stomach and have to sleep sitting up or get terrible heartburn and stomach gas . All I can say is forget heavy exercise, unless you build up to it and give up smoking , be carefully when using bleach or other gaseous chemicals as the effects are twice as strong.

. I miss my running very Sadly - I had my left lung removed last year due to tracheal tumor. I'm still sad, but wish to fight to RUN again. No marathons just usual stuff of 5miles 2-3 times a week in 50 minutes. Joel

I lost complete function of my left lung over 2 years ago. I had acute pneumonia, both collapsed and the left never recovered. It is permanently collapsed due to the scar tissue the fused it together.

Before the incident I was very athletic and in fact was in the process of training for my first marathon. It's been a long recovery now only have half lung capacity, but guess what? I'm again training to run my first marathon!

Most things are possible if you put your mind to it.

I'm 15 and about to be 16 in a week. I was born with one lung. I'm short, i'm about 4'9. When i was a bit younger I was much more active and I loved running. Since I turned 12 things started to get a lot harder. I dont know if its because I am getting older but walking up the stairs is such a hard time at school. I can't really participate in gym anymore, its not that I'm incapable..I just get tired really easily and I give up. Having one lung lowers my self esteem, but I think I can get into much more mental activities. Mentally, I'm pretty great. My iq is somewhere around 140-150....so Ive been told. In all honesty I dont even know if thats real and what not. My lungs dont really affect my school work that much although its much easier for me to get panic attacks over things and its pretty horrible. But overall having one lung isn't that big of a deal. Its like living without a few fingers. Sure thats a big difference but I find that I'm aboe to hold my breath and hold notes in Chorus a lot longer than kids who do have 2 lungs. So yeah. Having one lung isn't all that crazy. I hope this helps anyone who is wondering whats its like.

Congratulation with your marathon training. Do you mean you live on half lung on your right side? I have one lung (left side) in full function but not my right lung which is congenital. My right lung didn't develop fully when I was born or born with it. My right lung has only one lobe instead of three lobes.

It is very nice of your positive outlook despite your medical condition. You must try to control your panic attacks by consulting a hypnotist or possibly acupuncture. Good for you being the choir and can hold your notes a lot longer than kids with two lungs.

Well, think of yourself when you get to my age at 70 (turning 71 in January 2016). I am your role model. I also live on one lung (left side). My right lung didn't develop fully. It has one lobe instead of three lobes. I was 32 when London doctors found my disability so called "McLeod's Syndrome". Actually, it is bronchietasis is my medical condition. Look up in the internet..Despite having one lung, I am an avid badminton player (great player, oldest female player in our group), play volleyball with secondary school kids and I am the oldest member at David Lloyd Beckenham as a body builder. Being fit, I don't have cellulite, aged spots, diabetes or high blood pressure. My metabolic rate (years) is 55 but I look more like in my late 40s or early 50s.. I am only 4' 11". I still wear 5" high heels. My skin is smooth and I am toned with muscular.physique.

Having one lung life goes on. One thing I make sure, I am not in contact with people who smoke. I am allergic to the smell and smoke of the tobacco but not to the e-cig.

Hi I a 45 yr old woman and I recently had my entire lung removed. Dr's thought I had lung cancer, but it turned out to be an extremely rare sarcoma. Its been almost 3 months now. Breathing def changes, i dont have difficulty but at times i feel my chest us really tight and my breathing is heavy. It is a life changing event and rhe surgery itself is not easy at all. I was in the hospital for 10 days and then recovered at hm. You need st least 8 weeks to ge pretty much recovered. It has caused me some depression and im being strong to fight that on my own. Good luck eith your dad and I hope surgery goes well without any complications

You are an amazing young girl, My advice is to continue exercising which is great for the lung. Being born with one lung is a bit different than having both and all of a sudden u lose one. Physically it takes time to adjust to having the one. I wish u all the best and thanx for your story
