I am 47 y/o and had a tonsillectomy 4 days ago.  I can barely taste very salty chicken noodle soup. Nothing else has any flavor. I can distinguish between cold and hot, and fortunately do not have a metallic taste in my mouth, but almost everything has no taste.  What is the chance this is only temporary?

i was wondering if anything had changed for you i had my tonsils out 6th nov sever paon etc but straight away relised my taste was wrong as girl opposite who had just had same procedure was eating and tasting i tried and everything tasted odd. chocolate taste intesive sweet but like also eating sour milk and get a burning sensation. most other things taste rancid!! im living on battered fish chips and crumpets as seem to be the only thing that dont taste rancid but they still dont taste right. i can smell fine so the things i read about it being smell not taste are rubbish. im like you depressed and losing weight 18lbs already as so hard to cind anything i can eat. have you had any improvment ??

I too have the same symptoms it's been just over a month since my op and it's very stressful as I don't enjoy food or drinks anymore

There are medicines available that will eliminate your taste disorder problem.even you can add spices to your foods or add butter cheese to your vegetables to enhance the taste.

It's been 4 weeks since my tonsillectomy and lingual tonsillectomy and food still taste different for me also. It seems as if I can't get the full flavor of anything. So frustrating as I LOVED to eat prior to this. I'm still waiting to get the taste back.

I am replying to this with good news, I am 24 years old and had a tonsilectomy in Aug 2013 due to tonsil stones, no one told me about the taste loss and my Dr. brushed it off. It didn't happen til 10 days post op and I was confused, everything tasted bitter and like metal, disgusting and so depressing! Like so depressing! I know the pain....well good news! It is now 7 months later and my taste is back, I took zinc vitamins for a while and that helped but it was bad for a while I could only taste salt and cooked broccoli...I hope this gives hope to someone, it will come back it takes time. I was so hopeless, but promised myself if my taste came back I would come write on the board to give hope to another suffering.

My response is right under yours about my experience but really quick, everything comes back, the taste of food, I was very depressed after mine but it comes back I wanna say mine did around 3 months, take zinc vitamins, they help with the regrowth of cells and are available at drug stores

My sense of taste was also greatly altered for the worse after a tonsilectomy. The good news is that it came back fully after seven weeks. I lost about 25 lbs, but I really needed to do so anyway!

I had my surgery (tonsillectomy) about a month ago.  My taste buds are so damaged that I cannot taste anything but a bitter metallic taste in my mouth 24/7!  I am so sick of this bad taste. I cannot get rid of it! And all sweet things are so nasty!  Sometimes I think I am going to go mad from the constant metallic taste in my mouth.  I lay in bed at night with only one thing on my mind "I hate this taste in my mouth"!  I would gladly walk the entire lienth of this country to have a moment of no metal taste.  One of the worsted things about this is I am a chef.  I don't know how much longer I can go pretending I can taste at work.  Its really hard guessing how much salt or sugar to put in my dishes because everything is nasty metal tasting. ):  But seriously the metal taste in my mouth makes me so sick.  Nothing takes it away. A matter of fact some things make it worse!  Today I ate an avocato it was one of the natyest things I have ever ate!  I had to run my tong in hot water for 5 mins to get the gross taste out of my mouth! But wasn't really worth it because the gross metal taste was there.  God have mercy. ):

I just had my tonsils out yesterday, but it is weird to me not to be able to taste very well. My mom and two sisters bot. Had theirs out and all could taste fine and wanted lots of ice cream. I have eaten ice cream, a chocolate shake, Popsicles and even some mashed potatoes and am just having trouble tasting. I can taste it first, but then it just loses flavor. I do not have the metallic taste, and am not having really any other complications, hoping for a full recovery from all of this and to get my taste back.

I am three weeks post surgery. No metallic taste, but taste is altered. Almost all carbs taste like cardboard. I only enjoy orange jello, ice pops and cold water. Everything else that I eat is because I know that I have to. I am also experiencing some depression, but not sure if it is related. If my situation improves, I will post.
