wow i have the exact same problem!

my stomach growls really really loud everytime im in a silent place too and it has been doing this for over 3 years. -I basically have a list of excuses to get me out of any exam/ test/ or really silent place! I don't think it is a matter of being hungry, well not for me, it's become a nerve issue where my tummy rumbles whenever i'm nervous or stressed (a.k.a. SCHOOL! ahh)

As you can see i am yet to find a solution myself, but usually I just tense my stomach a whole lot or repetatively hit it at the back of the class...

I'm not much help but sometimes it's just nice to know there's someone with the same problem... I know it is for me!
-Thanks!

so good to know other people have the same problem. I absolutely dread going into situations where my stomach can be heard. College has become a total nightmare-it's so humiliating. I get anxious and stressed at the thought of going into a quiet lecture because i know my tummy's going to act up ...which in turn makes the growling even worse! Sometimes it seems like its not even coming from my actual stomach though- more like me lower abdomen, sometimes lower back.

i find chewing food more than you normally would can help-its time consuming but it does calm things down a little. Gonna try that culturelle too, fingers crossed!

I too have the stomach noises going on and think it may be celiac disease. Which is mostly a sensitivity to wheat and gluten specifically.
if you avoid gluten(HARD TO DO) then the symptoms should go away.

I originally posted about the possibility of parasites. With the elimination diet and trial and error, I've basically pinpointed the cause to: GLUTEN!!

My stomach also growls sometimes after I've eaten sweet fruit like watermelon, and I'm pretty sure that dairy has bad effects on me as well.

In a nutshell, you should avoid:

Gluten (pasta, bread, cake, cookies, sauces w/gluten, etc)

For some ppl, you should Minimize:
dairy:
sugar (junk food, some fruit)

Wishing you all health!

like most of you i suffer from the same things. unlike some people i don't have any pain i feel just fine (except feeling a bit weak but i have always felt that way and my "growling problem" just happened a year ago) i am now 15 years old and feed up with it, i get stomach growls that happen randomly and the only diarrhea or blowness/pain i get its when i'm about to get my period and thats it. i suffer from depression and anxiety and phobia to quiet places mostly all do to my growls. also do to it i get really nervous and sweat a lot, taking test is a nightmare but unlike many of the people here i actually get better when i eat but as soon as i eat a snack i get hungry again and have to eat something or my stomach goes crazy i find that eating in between classes helps me out a lot!honestly i gave up so many things and i thought about killing my self countless times (growling being only one of the reasons) i have to live in constant shame and embarrassment. IF YOU KNOW OF ANY WAY TO HELP PLEASE DO SO reply here. from the bottom of my heart i hope everyone here gets the help they need and live a happy healthy GROWLING FREE life on day =)

i'm 51 years old and working. 2-3 years ago, i was in a middle of meeting and my stomach made those funny noises. good thing it was past lunch time and we broke the meeting. another time, i was having a one-on-one and same thing happened, and the other person was 'are you alright? is there anything wrong?' the noises also come when i'm in my desk working. the point is, this is something beyond our control and there should be nothing embarrassing about it. i'v e been around matured people and no one thinks it's offensive. (Us people who are having that, 100% of the time feels that way). until lately, i still had those funny noises, but considerably lesser. i don't know what brings it on. I have a friend who's so knowledgeable she'll put the internet to shame. She has MS and in remission for more than 5 years now. she does a lot of things the 'natural' and organic way. she said the noise is about the stomach's and the gut's acidity for one (not discounting parasites as there are documented experiences here, and other physiological bases like Crohn's, etc etc). she said to take raw apple cider vinegar, laced with a bit of raw honey. this will promote alkali, and lessen/neutralize the acid. she just told me about it yesterday when right after coffee and some cakes, my stomach made those noises again. for my stomach, it makes those noises when empty or full. I eat just about anything so i don't know what promotes it. two weeks ago, i started on whole grain bread with almond butter, yoghurt/strawberry smoothie midmorning, whole grain bread and some cold cuts and veggies for lunch, munch on nuts/carrots all day long, monday to friday at work. and i noticed these noises were almost non existent! it may sound boring, but being 'matured' i have issues like cholesterol count that needs lowering and i'm into perpetual attempts to lose weight.

i heard all of you and we're all in the same boat. young people and kids, lessen your anxieties. at most, people find the noises signaling hunger (thre's nothing wrong about feeling hungry) and not as offensive as bad body odor or bad breath, that we all know are controllable.

loosen up. take it from an old lady! ;-)

Here's the short version:

Stomach growling is caused by stomach acid. You may not feel hungry, but your stomach IS hungry... so it secretes stomach acid...and your stomach starts to growl. When your stomach starts to growl and you're embarrassed and anxious about it, your anxiety causes your stomach to secrete even MORE stomach acid, causing an INCREASE in growling. Got that?

The solution: eat frequent, small meals or snacks with protein and a mixture of complex and simple carbohydrates (complex=pasta, wheat bread, wheat crackers; simple=sugar, jelly)

One more tip: When you're having a growth spurt (ie. if you're a teenager), then your body is wanting more nutrition, better nutrition to sustain your growth. When it's hungry, it's going to produce stomach acid in the hopes that you're going to be feeding it soon. My suggestion: don't eat junk food, eat healthy. Healthy can be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

My best wishes for a quiet belly!

I have started noticing these noises from last one year. I didnt change my diet and nothing new in my food varieties but how come all of a sudden these embarrassing sounds, didn't understand. Slowly i had identified that if i take milk in the morning stomach is growling. So i have substituted breakfast with water & oatmeal, Egg & Omlet, little milk with cheerios and i dont get embarassing sounds anymore. I wouldn't say that growling is completely gone but noise is very little compared to the earlier one's.

As milk is very essential to our bones i am taking it during weekends. Hope this will help some of you to resolve these growling sounds. Best of Luck!!

Wow i am so glad i found this thread. i thought i was the only one and was crazy! i have been dealing with this since i was like 14, its horrible and i missed out a lot on life bc of this. i think it started in 5th grade once and it went away then 6th grade was bad but got through it! seventh only a few times but 8th grade was bad...it got so bad that i couldnt go to school anymore and my parents took me to a therapist and everyone chalked it up to anxiety so they put me on all these anxiety pills and it works i mean i have learned to deal with it and i can go to school but it still comes back... i have found that exercise does work i always did cross country and track and the time i was doing sports it wouldnt happen as much. but once everything goes well it will happen once and screw up everything i have worked for. like i am a freshman in college now and i have been doing great with this problem it hasnt happened at all but it happened during and accounting test a couple of weeks ago and it has turned me back into this state of worrying...i hate this but i guess its just something i have to deal with...

You guys really need to start drinking olive oil. I take olive oil with every meal and it is very effective in reducing my stomach noises. I recommend it to everyone.

My symptoms:
1.) I have had chronic diarrhea for about five months now. It only happens at night.
2.) Along with the diarrhea, I will have extreme stomach pain. (I will literally be shaking from pain while on the toilet.)
