It's like a few of you think you're medical gurus or something. When did this turn into a fight about whether or not weed creates physical or psychological dependence? I mean, I came on here to relate to others and feel like I'm not doing this alone, but somehow it's become a high school debate. We should be helping each other.

I've been smoking weed for 6 years multiple times a day, daily. Just recently decided to quit to join the armed forces. All these people smoking on and off, and for a couple years only, but stopping in between, are not even on the same level as us. Spew all the scientific BS out of your mouth that you want, physical or not, the following couple days after quitting, you will lose appetite, sleep, and wake up with sweaty sheets. I'm having the dreams too, but to be honest, I don't even remember having dreams while i did smoke weed ha. Simple solution though, do not fall back on the weed, keep yourself entertained and NEVER think things like, "Dang, if only I had weed right now...". Life is amazing with or without weed, trust.
I quit two months ago after smoking heavily every evening for 2 1/2 years (with occasional breaks).
I have a whole bunch of symptoms that I think are probably due to my body getting used to not having cannabis anymore. Before smoking cannabis, my health was always perfect. At the moment, I find that every night around 4 a.m. I'm sort of buzzing; I have very vivid dreams, I often wake up in a sweat, I have a huge amount of acid in my stomach which makes me feel like a have a stomach ulcer (but I saw a doctor and he didn't think I did) and I'm stressed, anxious and my mood is very unstable. Oh, and I get headaches every day!
Of course I could be wrong in ascribing all this to cannabis, but I have noticed most of these symptoms appearing before, exactly two weeks after quitting -- which is also when they appeared this time. They are gradually subsiding but I feel like c**p.
Last time it took about 3 months before the vivid dreams and night sweats disappeared, and I was back to 100% health. This time my symptoms are much worse, because I have been smoking a lot longer. I lived in Holland and had access to the strongest weed available, and I got very stoned every night. I feel like a total id**t; I believed cannabis was mostly harmless and that once I quit I'd feel totally OK. Instead, I have lost my previously-excellent health. I can only hope it comes back in another month or two.
I might mention that I have a friend who has got stoned a hell of a lot in his life, and has many of the same symptoms, especially stomach acid problems, anxiety and unstable mood. Clearly not everyone is affected this way by cannabis, and it's possible this is all unrelated to cannabis and coincidental, but I very much doubt it.
After all, if for two years you get stoned every evening and eat huge amounts of food, then barely eat anything till the next evening when you do it again, it makes sense that your stomach will produce too much acid at night for some months after quitting, after stopping this bizarre eating pattern. It also makes sense that if you get stoned to get to sleep for two years, when you stop you are going to have to catch up on a hell of a lot of dreams.
And also, if you're basically tranquilized for two years, when you quit your body is going to go to the opposite extreme since it's got used to living with a tranquilizing substance in your bloodstream and suddenly the substance is gone.
Take my advice -- enjoy cannabis occasionally and under no circumstances develop a habit. If you value your health that is! If you need a way to relax, look into Samatha meditation.
To all of you that say there are no physical withdrawal symptoms...you must have been smoking some weak weed. Before I started smoking the good stuff, I could quit easily. However, kine bud is a different story. Every time I quit it, I have night sweats, chills and nausea. These are physical symptoms. Just becuase there is no scientific evidence does not mean it does not exist. New things are discovered in science every day. Years ago the g-spot was a myth and scientists were saying women don't ejaculate, when I would squirt all the time. Drugs that were deemed "safe" are now off the market because the original science was wrong. Scientists don't know everything, and for people to come on here and say that other people are lying about withdrawal is just BS. It's real. Maybe not for everyone, but it is very real and very physical and it sucks. Yes, it does subside in a week or so, but that first week is rough. For those that say it's not physically addictive, I say smoke kine bud every day for ten years and see how you feel when you quit.
I have read through many pages of quitters comments and one thing that amazes me is the denial of the potential of cannabis addiction. The scientific community managed to deny that tobacco was "physically addictive" for many many decades. So just because there is no scientific study to prove it is addictive I find that personal experiences speak volumes.
Either way, I have more friends that have failed to quit over the years than I'd admit too normally. A couple of friends have done it but they have totally changed their social circle, their hobbies and their outlook - which at the time I have half resented and half admired. One less pot smoker makes you feel an outcast but hand on heart I think they are hero's.
So anyway, I've been smoking lots of weed everyday since I was 16, at college i fell into the pot gang and ever since its become my lifestyle. I smoke about 7 grams a week, thats a couple of eighths over here and once upon a time it cost £20 per eight, but now its more like £50 per eighth and its made me realize I smoke way more cash than I have to spare. Now i'm 28 and if you do the maths it means I've smoked approximately 5kg's of weed, in todays money thats about £40,000 worth. Enough pot to fill a good few wheel barrows, buy a very nice car, or bury your mates house with 800 tonnes of limestone chippings - or more rashonally pay off our mortgage.
I've tried giving up so many times because I feel genuinely guilty to what I have done to the best years of my youth, what i've done to my health and how I have wasted my potential future. I've gone weeks before, I've almost made a month a few times but some how old habits are hard to shift. I'm not entirely sure I can define the tobacco addiction away from the weed addiction, the line is a blur - but hand on heart a cigarette never hits the spot - but nor does a joint anymore.
If it wasn't addictive I wouldn't smoke in guilt. I have now gone about 3 days and i'm quitting smoking everything for good. I look forwards to having clean teeth, a normal tongue, fresh breath and clothes. No moments of relapse, a complete change. But to make it work i'm still smoking tobacco, restricted to 2 fags a day, of which I only smoke half in disgust, I feel that nicotine's claws are deeper than I realize. If i try to quit the fags at this moment I think I'll fail to shift the weed because tobacco withdrawal makes me tetchy and irritable - the perfect solution is to get stoned - but that will just keep me smoking joints that contain tobacco thus achieving nothing! I smoke these half fags but it is no pleasure, its actually a grind, it tastes like c**p, it makes me stink and every year my health will pay the price. Either way the weed is number 1 priority, enough is enough.
Smoking cannabis alters my mindset in quite a big way, it also affects my diet - these are the main reasons i want to quit. I'm so underweight and probably technically I have an eating disorder. I can go a couple of days without eating food, just lots of tea with sugar and maybe some chocolate bars and some cheese. I think the cannabis makes me Hypoglycemic, or something, not that I really know what i'm on about. So along with quitting weed i'm quitting sugar. Maybe i'll get back to normality before I hit my 30's, in the bottom of my heart I know I have very little choice.
So whats the point in this?
Confidence in myself would be nice, i remember feeling pretty confident 15 years ago, not anymore. I could cry writing that truth.
Respect for myself and the feeling of respect from my peers. How could my loved ones ever be proud of me when I waste everything I have.
Facing my destiny - I've got big fat fish to fry, and i'm never going to do it stoned.
Honoring my body - you only get one and one day I have to die. Later the better! I quite like being alive.
Self control - Without it i'm never going to be the Jedi I long to be.
So once I get over the train spotting withdrawal the world had better watch out. I'm going to be back, and more determined than ever before. At the end of the day if I can kick my own ass into shape just think of the threat I am to the rest of the world.
Anyone saying quitting weed will not affect your sleep is misguided. its 3:38 am, I quit 3 nights ago, and I have quit for long periods prior to this (smoked on and off for 8 years..mostly on... 2 periods of 6 months off) anyone I have discussed this with agrees that sleep becomes difficult, thoughts are more frantic and it is hard to switch off, also, once you have finally achieved sleep, dreams become extremely vivid and particularly unusual. Believe me I have always been all for the "its all in your head" line of thinking.. as it makes it easier for me to be stubborn with myself and not break to urges (which i do believe are psychological) but there is no denying sleeping is dramatically effected by quitting marijuana, I would also like to point out that marijuana use has a large effect on REM sleep which is linked to short term memory.
If these psychological symptoms affect you physically.. you are left with no choice but to conclude that these described symptoms create a very real withdrawal

I am 18, just started college, and have smoked weed every day, all day for about two years. If your saying there aren't symptoms then you clearly didn't smoke as much as you thought you did. I'm on my third day of cold turkey and even though i sleep almost the same, i can't eat and i'm always in the most horrible mood. The past couple of days i may have ate what i normally would in one day and i always have morning sickness. Its like i can feel that i'm hungry but food just sounds gross. Also I feel almost depressed unless i am concentrated on something else and I fiend for it like no other. To everyone that is having symptons i say stay strong and don't listen to the people who thought smoking a bowl of sh*t reggie got them high :). It could just be different for all people but i can't deny these symptoms. Also I am completely for weed legalization and I am going to start smoking again as soon as i can. i am only quitting for a couple of months in case of a drug test.

Yeah that sounds about right --- not only the physical stuff, but the fact that you're paranoid about it and have lost the usual sense of invulnerability that 18-year-olds have.
I've already posted a couple of times here --- I just want to add, now that cannabis is a thing of the past for me, that it took me 5 months to totally recover from my habit. However, usually withdrawal symptoms only last a few days. In my case I think it was a lot worse because I had really geared my life around my habit, was smoking very strong stuff for a long time, and I was no longer 18 years old like many on here.
How does your HYPOTHESIS that it's the smoke deal with, I DONT SMOKE I VAPORIZE (have for years)!

I've been smoking pot multiple (usually 3 or 4) times daily for about 3 years now. At the risk of sounding pompously resistant, I have to stop smoking for weeks at a time on several occasions throughout the year to spend time with my family at times like Christmas, Thanksgiving, July 4th, etc. Mainly holidays. Anyway, each time I have to stop, I experience no insomnia, no nausea, no irritability, no nothing. I'm a very grounded man, so I can safely say that, unless the physiology of every human being is drastically different, which of course it isn't, cannabis has no apparent side effects. If you're a doctor and know about something I don't, I don't know what to tell you. I have personally experienced absolutely no side effects whatsoever and I never have any trouble stopping, sometimes for months at a time. Then, once I'm back home, I just sit and smoke a nice portion from the vaporizer or the bong. Gotta love that stuff! In any case, I don't support anti-hemp laws because since I've started up, my quality of life has increased ten-fold. After all this time, I can't find a single reason to give it up.
