Incorrect it has a DIRECT effect on the endocrine system and suppresses LH (leutenizing hormone) doing its job ala the pituitary. It can literally bottom out testosterone levels and cause a rise in estrogen which is responsible for much (not all) of the weight gain.

A GP wouldn't know this, an endocrinologist or urologist would however.

I don't care what the doctors say about methadone and weight gain. Methadone does and I emphasize does cause weight gain. Now, I will explain why this happens. Yes, cravings of sugar may come and usually do, but those can be controlled. The thing that cannot be controlled is the water retention and constipation that is a persistent problem with this drug. Methadone completely stops the metabolism from functioning which of course will make you gain weight. There are exceptions to the rule of weight gain with methadone and you may very well be one, but these exceptions are few and far between. When first beginning methadone a person may not see a significant change, but after a year or more of using the drug your metabolism which began slowing down at first uses begins to hastily halt metabolizing food. Working out, eating right, etc. are good for anybody and can help some with methadone weight gain, but only so much. This drug can make a person toxic which can result in death. Far more information and warnings should be given to patients by their doctors when prescribing this drug. Methadone was created to give to soldiers so pain would not stop them from fighting. This is how much numbing effects this medicine has. Personally, I think it should be banned. You can expect to gain significant weight if on methadone and the sad thing is that it could screw your metabolism up to the point that even after quitting it your metabolism may never work properly again.

You should probably consider yourself very very lucky because 100% of the people I know on methadone as well as everything I am reading it absolutely does put weight on you I was a size 2 and have the perfect body and I don't know what I weigh now or what size but I can tell you I packed on quite a bit away and yes it did give me a major Sweet Tooth which I never had before which was probably part of it but I have been off of this garbage poison for just two weeks now and the weight is coming off so I will never ever believe this does not put weight on you it's just not true because I just know way too many people who take it and don't abuse it they take it as directed and no matter what the Dos is high or low every single one of them packed on quite a bit of weight so happy for you but you were the exception to the rule

This gives me so much hope! What number were you at when you jumped off? I feel like all I want to do is sit down and watch tv. I hate the person I've become, and all the weight I've gained.

I myself was taking it for 4 years, only 50mg daily and I gained a lot of weight. I went Cold turkey it was terrible but I didn't give in. I am now in month 7 and I weigh less now before I started. Trust me all... You can don this, it's tough yes, like having the flu 10 fold but just do it and you'll be Happier then ever!

Before even started methadone I was always a steady 115 pounds at 5 foot nothing. Ive been on 95g a day for 1 year. My weight went up to 145 for the first time life my .The weight couldnt and wouldnt go until I have been going down 3mg a week. I finally lost 5 pounds after trying everything to loose. The methadone puts weight on you. Go down slow and youll see it go away. Try to walk each day for 30 mins too to burn old fat.

I realize this was posted over a year ago but it made me feel so happy and gave me a ton of motivation. I have been on methadone since May 2013 almost 4 years and I finally got tired of it and stopped taking it cold turkey as of 1 week ago. I know I am finally done with it and after gaining over 60lbs on it this post made me so optimistic. I literally teared up as I finished reading your post and I even read it to my family. Thank you Sandra. Your words really made a difference to me. Bless your heart and I wish you the best of luck in everything you do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
