I've had the Mirena for about a year, and I bleed for 17 days after. Then I had I regular Periods all the time. But this month I haven't had my period yet. Should I be worried? or is it possible for my period to stop all together after that long. The mirena made my periods way longer, but lately they havent been so long.

I am glad someone else is having not nly the same problems as me right now but I too felt that the insertion of the Mirena IUD was THE MOST PAINFUL EXPERIENCE EVER!!! I too bled for a bit of time heavily after I got it. But since that ended I have not had one period or bleeding. I do however know when it is my cycle time sue to I still get PMS all around! But it is now Sunday and maybe Wednesday or Thursday I got my period! I did just start seeing someone and yeah I have deep feelings and we are having sex for the first time on Tuesday and NOW THIS!!!! I am trying to make it stop and it figures I just rescheduled my gyno appointment till next month! How long has everyone else's "breakthrough periods" lasted??? I really need help here...!!!

K well I'm seeingvall these stories so I'm gunna share mine. i had the mirena inserted may 2010. insertion was not painful for me. i stopped havin a period n was loving it. about a yr ago i started spottin after sex i went n had it checked out. I found out the strings weren't visible n doc said that was ok. n then he told me i had a small ovarian cist. Doc said that it would go away on its own. then afew months later my partner said he could feel it poking him during sex n it hurt. After that we cut bak on the sex. We discussed gettin it removed but we couldn't afford to get itvout. so we dealt wit it. After that he noticed that it moves. one time its on one side the other it on the opposite. side. Still cudntvafford to get it out. I hav had numerous. prefnancy scares. all cumin up negative throufh a test. but these scares were as reeal as prego symptoms....like one minute happy the next in tears. on may 14 I'm gettin this damn thing out. I KNOW IT IS SCREWIN MY BODY UP. i jus hope n pray it hasn't done too much damage. Also after 3 years I'm havin abperiod. Which i feel cannot b normal. whatever you do DO NOT GET THE MIRENA!!!! it is not worth it.

Okay....I am glad I'm not alone.....I love my iud but the bleeding or spotting after sex is freaky. It's been 3 years, it's rare but spotting has occured off and on. Mostly after sex. I want to know if it hurts when they take this thing out??????????? That is what i really need to know., and do y'all think that the hormones in the iud make you act or feel bi-polar almost some times??? I swear, i feel like a roller coaster of emotion sometimes.......

I'm going through the same thing. I have had my IUD since May 2010 8 weeks after my daughter was born. Unlike some of you it didn't hurt at all and only had a little spotting. I have not had any bleeding since, until now. Now 3 years later I have been having really bad cramps and just starting bleeding. I do have polycystic ovarian syndrome but it has never felt this bad. Laying in bed with knees to my chest. Calling dr in the am for sure.

I had my Mirena removed in March after hearing about the recall, and I started bleeding almost immediately for over a month. I went to the ER and they gave me hormone pills to stop the bleeding, however on a recent trip I forgot my pill bottle at home, and again started bleeding so heavily that I went through 1 super plus tampon an hour, also was passing HUGE clots. The same type of bleeding happened when I got it removed as well. I also did not have a period for over 3 years, and when I started researching this product, I found our stories are not uncommon. My advice to you is to get that thing out of you asap! I suffered severe depression for 3 years on this birth control when it was inserted after my fourth child. I had NEVER had Post partum depression with any of my other children. Within days I was spiraling into sadness, and I didn't put the two together, I thought I was going crazy! My husband thought I was Bi- polar it was so bad! I'd run to your dr's office and get that"thing" out of you!

I have to respond to this post in case someone contemplating getting the Mirena reads it. I am very health conscious, use all natural products. I never used hormonal birth control. I had very heavy periods and kept getting anemic. My mom and aunt both had hysterectomies because of heavy bleeding due to fibroids, and it looked like I was headed in that direction. I was terrified to try the Mirena, mostly because of the stuff I read on the internet. But I wanted to keep my uterus. So I agreed to try it. It is painful to have inserted. I bled a lot afterwards. My periods were lighter and lighter and then eventually gone. My body replenished my iron stores naturally from my diet, and despite the fact that I am vegan, my iron levels are fantastic now. It has completely changed my life. When five years were up I got a new one inserted.
The reason I am concerned about this message is that what happened for her will not happen for all. Mirena did not work for this lady. The pregnancy rate for Mirena is less than one percent, and if it is properly inserted, more like a hypothetical risk only, a statistical probability approaching zero. I also don't understand the heavy periods because Mirena releases a small amount of a horomone directly into the endometrial lining so that it will not fully develop. There shouldn't be any blood there for heavy menstrual or cyclical bleeding. If you have an IUD and have problems like this, see your dr immediately. And there is no "shot" to remove an IUD that has grown into the uterine wall. It sounds like this woman received very poor medical care.

Im replying to this because I am concerned that so many stories popped up at the three year mark. I actually had the 10 year copper T that my nut job doctor suggested, I was never given any instructions and well 4 months after I found out I was pregnant, my nut job doctor wanted me to abort the pregnancy but I refused. I spotted for 3 months and was told I could lose the baby at anytime, so I was terrified. At 6 months along I went to see a speciList and they found that this nut job doctor actually placed it correctly. When I got pregnant the iud moved to the top and out of the way. My daughter was born march 2010 8lbs 1oz and the iud was impeded in the placenta. I was kinda of hesitant on trying another iud but I didnt want to get my tubes tied. So I tried the mirena. Ive loved it because I was one with the painful heavy periods so not having one was great.  But in november my 11 year old started her period and ever since ive had cramps and spotting...anyone have any ideas? Should I just get it replaced?

I had a mirena iud for a couple of years and seemed to have random spotting but not really any normal periods. All of a sudden I started bleeding horribly. I had heavy bleeding with big long clots. I could feel the bleeding but don't recall any pain. I felt like I was going to bleed to death. My doctor had tried to remove it at the office but the string he said had went in and he couldn't get it. I think that was before the heavy bleeding. This occurred in 2007 or 2008. I had it surgically removed along with eblation which is the scraping of the uterine walls. (D&C) and now have e-sure?? copper coils.I have had problems with stomach bloating, severe pain which has lead to several tests. At least two emergency room visits in which I was given morphine. Finally was told by a gyn, that I have fluid retention in my uterus. In order to make sure it doesn't happen anymore I need to have my uterus removed. I recently had a vaginal ultrasound where I was asked if I have an IUD. During one of my ER visits I was told that one of my coils has moved but shouldn't cause any problems. I wish I had never gotten that Mirena. I had been on birthcontrol pills for years and never had any problems. Now I am totallu freaking out and going to do some more appoints possibly including one with an attorney.
