That is not true
Not ALL cats pass it in their liter box

I have two cats. We figured out when they have a hairball to get rid of they stop eating both treats and food. However, one of our cats, a 13year old tuxedo, will vomit both liquid and solids up for weeks. I’ve had her xrayed, blood work, scanned, changed food to hyperallergenic and eventually it cleared up. She’s now been at it again for about 4 days. Does anyone have a solution to this problem. If the vets can’t figure it out after spending $1300 what do I do? We also have carpet so this is not good!

Try canned pumpkin 2-3 times a week. Put a half a tablespoon into their wet food and it will help ease the hair through the digestive tract with ease. If your cat isnt picky and will lick it off the spoon, that's much faster.
Make sure they have CLEAN water and plenty of it. I recommend stainless steel water dishes, not plastic.
Make sure your kitties get plenty of wet food in their diet as it is much better for them and closer to their natural diets. It'll also keep them hydrated better than dry food. Also, don't feed them any food with corn in it, or food you can't get from a pet store. Stay away from brands like IAMS, Purina, kitten chow, etc anything you can pick up at a Walmart as it's full of fillers, corn, unnecessary additives, grain, etc that can make any cat unhealthy and sick ( especially over time. You might not notice it now but it will show up in health issues down the road ). All cats are different and some might actually have a grain, beef, chicken, and or soy allergy like my babies. I feed them Merrick brand, LID ( limited ingredient diet ) Salmon. They're healthier than ever and full of spunk and have beautiful coats. No health issues.
I had nothing but hairballs and missing patches of hair, they would itch and seem lazy until I switched their diet years ago. 2013 to be exact.
