Not trying to scare anyone but I had the THD surgery and a colonoscopy done on Fri (3 days ago) and I have been in EXTREME pain ever since. I am an athletic 43 year old male. My Dr (Jay Redan) is rated one of the top surgeons in the Orlando, FL area. I don't know, maybe my case was more extreme than most. I had very large internal roids that were prolapsed but I had no pain at all. Minor bleeding once in the while but that was it. The day of the surgery was nothing out of the ordinary. Post surgery I had difficulty urinating. They put a cath in, drained my bladder and was going to send me home. I had some pain but not too bad still groggy from the anesthetic. Dr asked if I wanted to stay over night and I thought it would probably be a good idea. I was SO glad I did. The first night in the hospital after the anesthetic wore off I was at constant level 10 pain. Nothing I did made it any better. It hurt to lay in bed so I would get up and stand, that hurt too so I would sit on the toilet which seemed to help a little. I tried the sitz bath, ice packs and nothing worked. The nurse called my Dr in he middle of the night and got some stronger IV pain meds. That finally helped by morning. The next morning Dr Rosser (my Dr's partner) was filling in for his rounds the next day. Dr Rosser was a super nice guy and decided to keep me in the hospital a second day to get my pain under control, which they did. I had a small bloody bowel movement that was about the dia of a pencil and a few more that looked like pieces of raw bloody hamburger. They discharged me from the hospital on the third day and sent me home. All was fine until the IV pain meds began to wear off, then I was back to level 10 pain again. I called Dr Rosser who told me I was likely having spasms. To take another Hydrocodone and a hot bath. I did and that brought my pain to around level 8 where it stayed all night. Today my pain has been up and down, I have been on a steady diet of Colace (stool softener) and Hydrocodone 650 mg every four hours. After every attempt at a bowel movement which are very painful I have to get right into a hot bath tub. So far the biggest bowel movement I have had is about the size of my index finger, mostly just blood and bits of tissue. I was pretty shocked at the amount of pain I had. The Dr did say my roids were very large they also found and removed a large colon polyp that he said if left would have likely been cancer by the time I was 50 which is when they normally start doing preventive colonoscopies. I am still hanging in there hoping things will be better tomorrow. I have had ACL reconstructive knee surgery in the past with a patellar tendon graft that involved putting a screw and a metal clip in my knee that was far less painful than the THD procedure I just under went.
well done you told your experience in a very fine way and elloborated you view point in an excellent manner. We surely be bold enough for our Hemorrhoids treatment by THD surgery. It is very painfull and itching diease which keep the patient very much disturbed and could not keep his routine work. In this disease one cannot sit, stand , walk or sleep. one feels much discomfort and pain . once again thak you very much fro telling us your personal surgery go through process in the real manner.
hi and thanks for the huge amount of information and feedbacks shared in here.well i d like someone tell me the difference between THD and the laser procedure?which one is better and less pain and down time.thanks a lot
Just an update, I am 15 days post surgery and am back to normal. I started getting better at day 7 and went back to work on day 10 (I am a Sheriff Deputy). Overall I am glad I had it done, it seems to have fixed all my problems. I just wish they would have told me up front, you will be in a LOT of pain for the first 7 days but things will get better quickly after that. It would have made things a lot easier knowing.
Thank you very much for the update. Do you still have rectal bleeding now?
Very little bleeding.
Ok!! that was SO helpful!! But now all I need is a doctor name. I am about 2 hrs from Houston and have no idea where do go. Any names you can give me?
Hello All.
I require surgery but have not yet been successful in locating a surgeon in Ontario that performs the THD procedure. Can anyone provide me with some leads in Ontario, Canada?
Thank you.

Thanks for the posting your story. How much did it cost you? I've been looking all around and I can't find the cost of the THD anywhere. My doctor nor his nurse would tell me. I'm just looking for a rough estimate. $10,000? more, less. What was your out of pocket cost and how much did the insurance pay out.
Thanks.
There were 2 external skin tags from past external hemmorhoids that she was going to remove but after the procedure they 'went up' into my colon so there was no need she stated to perform any corrective action. I've read that this procedure really doesn't do much for the external ones but does help significantly with the internal prolapses which I had several. Good luck with your pain and do let us know how things are going.
