I have dealt with bleeding hemorrhoids for 15 years and have been anemic off and on for a lot of that time. I had THD surgery for internal hemorrhoids 13 days ago. I won't get into all the details, but will say that if I had the decision to make again, I would NOT have this surgery. This has been the most painful experience of my life and have no desire to repeat it.
I had this operation done a month ago after suffering for years. I just want to give an advice to anyone thinking of doing this THD operation. Do not make a decision based on what you read online. EVERY ONE IS DIFFERENT. The success of this operation depends on 3 factors. 1. how strong your body is. 2. the shape of your haemorrhoids. 3. The surgeon. That’s why the results vary from one to the other. First, you should know that, this operation is NOT pain free, and you will never be okay 48 hours after the operation !!. Actually, you will never be normal again the rest of your life. This operation is extremely painful, and you need 3 weeks to recover. The good thing is you will have a great chance to get rid of your haemorrhoids forever !!.....All what you need is a good surgeon who knows what is he doing! and a healthy body to resist after the operating. This operation might be the most difficult experience in your life, and you will have to pay a huge price after the operation, but in any case. My advice is: DO IT and don’t delay it. You should get rid of the haemorrhoids as soon as you could because the more they stay inside your body, the weaker you will become!
Hi GM my name is Tayo from Nigeria and i`ve been a surferer of this thing for about Nine years now.my case is very similar to yours and i am afraid of complete surgery because doctors here are not too good at surgery , for example people die alot from such surgery, however my quest for solution made me discover a youtube video about THD and your post tonight really convinced me that that is the kind of solution i need but my fear is the cost of gett such procedure.
You never made mention of how muchow you spent is there really a hope for me?
Read my forum discussion under the title:
THD (transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization) COST?
Get real surgery, not the "Magical cure" THD.
After suffering with piles for over 20 years and having them treated with injections and banding over the last few years I had the THD surgery a week ago.I understood from my Surgeon that 90% of patients have no pain and that the surgery is 90% successful.
I was not prepared for what happened.I came home the day of surgery and had a light meal that evening and took the stool softener as prescribed that night also difene for the pain.I felt bowel contractions 24hours after surgery and visited the bathroom but all I passed was gas and that was a little painful.I continued to take the stool softeners each night for the next few days but had no serious bm,just a little thin bm and at most an eggcupful expressed on two occasions.I urinated quite a lot with all the water I was drinking-6 to 8 pints per day.
72hours after surgery I still had not emptied my bowels even with all the water, stool softeners and a very high fibre diet,I started to feel a bit nautious and felt substantial pressure at my anus and general bottom area, then I stopped passing urine. After about 6hours of feeling this way I felt very uncomfortable-like there was something seriously wrong with my body.My wife drove me to the emergency department of our local hospital and on the way I passed out,my wife had to break a few red lights to get me there asap.
On reaching the hospital they took me in to the emergency department in a wheelchair and I had to wait for some time for attention, during which time I passed out again and my wife went and brought a nurse to me who took me in and put me on a drip. The pressure on my tummy and other areas of my body was enormous. After an hour or so on the drip I went to the bathroom and had an enormous bm,it felt like a bung had been removed from my anus and everything went through, could that be possible-some blockage or foreign object.I immediately felt better and my wife told me the colour had returned to my cheeks.
I expected this THD process to be easy peasy but for me it wasn't,and I'm still glad I had it done.
I,m still a little sore and taking a bm each day which hurts pretty bad but I'm hopeful that all will be well in a matter of weeks. When I have my surgeons appointment I will tell him the full story and how unprepared I was for what happened me.
I have no intention of putting anyone off having the THD surgery, just to add to the knowledge base for patients.
I am considering this surgery but a little fearful after reading some of these scary posts. How are the two of you doing now?
Are you glad had the procedure?
Thanks
Thanks , what u said is really helpful a lot ....
I had HALO/THD performed on me about 2 years ago. The operation has not worked as my haemorrhoids have returned so I will now have to consider whether to have another op.What I will say is that I found the post-op recovery to be very uncomfortable but not a living hell. I was discharged the same day of my op and recovery took about two weeks, but after the first week (and a couple of difficult trips to the toilet) things soon returned back to normal. Everybody will react differently to this type of operation, but bear in mind that most people that come online to write about it are likely to have had a bad experience. If you had a good experience there is no necessity to come online and tell everyone, you just forget about it.
In my experience, HALO/THD was difficult and testing but worth doing and I would be willing to do it again in the hope of a better result.
One question has it affected your sex life?
Hello everyone, I want to thank everyone for the information above, and especially the first person whom started the forum.
I have THD procedure on 8/22/2013 @ 12:00, and the procedure last one hour. Let me start with some background first, and I am 40 years old male and I have stage 4 hemorrhoids since I was in the late twenties. I asked my Dr. for surgery back then, and he said no and you are too young for surgery. Therefore, I just visit him once a year and he just prescribed the Analpram. As I get older and the hemorrhoids get worst. The last time I visited my Dr. again, and I ask him the Banding procedure. He said in your case banding procedure is not working because I have more than one hemorrhoids like cluster….something like that. The reason I ask for the Banding because I did a lot of researches and I did go to other Dr. for second opinion, and this Dr. said he can do the banding. I can go back to work after the banding procedure. That was why I ask my Dr. if the banding is an option. It took me six months to decide the THD procedure, and the last time I visited my doctor. He explained to me that all surgeries have risk, and 90% of chance that I have successfully surgery. I felt like he answers my questions very truthfully. That is why I have many what if these and that. Be honest and I am very nervous and scare….
On 8/22/2013 @9:00 am, I had to administer two fleet enemas. My hemorrhoids protrude and I am in pain very bad. I arrived Methodist Hospital at Texas Medical Center for Pre Op at 10:30.
I started the IV around 11:30 and the Anesthesia Dr. came in for evaluation. Two more nurse come in ask same questions again. Name, DBO, what I come here for…signed more papers… My surgeon came in for briefing and tells me eat a lot of fruits and vegi after surgery. I was very nervous, but I find peace in the Lord Jesus Christ.
@12 noon I headed in the Operation Room and I was asked to move to operating bed which I did….next thing I opened my eyes I saw my wife, kid and the nurse. I try to regain my conscience, and the nurse gives me some ice and some crackers. She said I am ready to charge and I asked the nurse that I don’t have to wait for the first urinate. She said no I can urinate at home…
@2:00 pm I took one Norco for pain and discharged from the hospital and got home about 2:45 pm. I drank little water by little and I still can’t urinate but I felt bloated. I drank more water and ate two more crackers…4 o’clock, 5 o’clock, 6 o’clock, still no urinate, and I called the 24 hours number. The nurse told me that sit bath with some warm water to loosen some muscles, and if I can’t take it anymore and I need to go to the nearest ER. That is the last thing I want to do, and I told myself to take it easy. I drank more water and try urinate again….. around 8 o’clock I started feel like I am able to urinate.. try again….until 9:30 I had two drops, and that was a good sign. 30 minutes later I had more. Finally I started my first meal for that day. I didn’t eat any meals in purpose until I can urinate because I am afraid that I will get constipation and can’t urinate at the same time. I don’t know if that right thing to do…
Next day in the morning at 12:30 a.m. I can urinate normally, but I still felt bloated. Around 2 a.m., I started pass gas, and I used the tissue wiped it and look like blood drainage from the surgery. I sit bath again or wash it with water. I repeated these steps all night long.
8/23/2013 @8:00 a.m. I blended a big bowl of fruit and drank it for breakfast. I have little pain from the surgery. (from the scale 1 to 10 and 10 is the unbearable) I rate it 2 or 3. After I administer two fleet enemas as I mentioned above, my hemorrhoids hang out and I rate the pain 8 or 9. That is little pain I have for the surgery. I told my wife that I felt little pain, and she said that my Dr. said I have local anesthesia. I will felt the pain in two or three days. Later the day I felt little pinch in the area, and I guess the local anesthesia start go away. So I took two Tylenols just in case.
8/24/2013 which is today, I had first bowel movements and what a relief. Never take it for granted. :)
Now I am sitting in front of my computer write these stuffs and hope it helps you, I will check back later. I pray that you will have same successful surgery as I am, and I am glad I made the THD procedure choice. May God Bless You All.
In Christ,
What city and state are you in? I am having trouble finding a doctor who performs THD in my city. Thanks
Read over your post again and saw that you do have your stated name, Texas. I am in North Carolina. A little too far :)
Hiyya...
I had my THD on this past Friday. I had a normal experience. Some issue urinating but more of a an issue with feeling.
Though, today and it started yesterday, I have protrusion from my vagina. It looks like a rectal type prolapse from my google picture search. I called the surgeon in a panic and the nurse and surgeon were very surprised and had not heard of this being a possible complication. I called my gyno who told me to call the surgeon. Went to see the surgeon who did rectal and vaginal exams. Didn't see the very obvious protrusion that is visible at the opening (now that some swelling has gone down). Even my non-doc husband can see it.
This protrusion is not painful but alarming. My rectum is healing great per the surgeon. I feel much better 6 days out. The nurse and doctor have speculated that the extreme pressure associated to THD caused me to sit and attempt BM more often than needed causing extra aggravation in the area and the resulting pressure and swelling caused this.
I have another call into my GYN. We'll see where we end up.
I would like to share my experience with you. I had this procedure done in June of this year. I have suffered from hemorrhoids for four and a half years. They were stage three and would prolapse after every bowel movement. I suffered pain every day for up to seven hours after each bowel movement. I also had a chronic fissure that just wouldn't heal due to the constant prolapse. I had my surgery at West Midlands Capio private hospital and will honestly say that the recovery was very painful for me. I think it was so painful as I had two fissures and a polyp removed aswell. I was in constant pain after the op for about 8 days, even tramadol didn't cut the pain. I also had to go back to the hospital and have a enema - which as you can imagine was awful! I also had some unusual swelling around my anus which has now turned to skin tags - which I can live with!
Although I have been through a lot of pain it was definately the best decision I have ever made as I am now hemorrhoid and fissure free nearly 5 months down the line. It has really changed my life and I would recommend this procedure whole heartedly.
Where do you practice, Dr? i need your office phone number and address.
Thanks much
