I had several external and internal hemmeroids removed. I sought surgery years ago but dr would simply be against it and put me on high fiber. For the past 2 years I needed blood transfusions every 3 months to 6 months. 2 weeks ago I wS in hospital with hemoglobin of 6, so 2 bags later, I was only at a 7.7. My dr agreed to do emergency surgery. That's my story

I experienced some of the same things about the frequency of movements. One thing my surgeon said is that the 'roads send wrong signals. It took awhile after getting off all the medication and laxatives/fiber/stool softener as well as renewing my exercise routine to be more "normal".

I had surgery on March 26 and it's now May 26th. I finally feel like I'm better. I can run and bike and poop without a problem. I still take stool softeners and gradually am taking less each week. I am glad I did it. I am a runner and hemmroids we're beginning to effect my everyday life. I will say I have never been in so much pain! I took a week off of work and I should of taken two. But I made it through! Baths were a huge help!!!

I have surgery three days Ago, left the opium and only taking ibufrofen 500, opium acts so weird on my body. On my thrid day had 5 BM, the first one was a little pain, and figured out that is better leaving out without strain. Bath tub is a must. I walk for 5-10 min every day. Pain from 1 to 10 is about 4. If you are mentally prepared, the op is not so bad. Good luck

When googling tips about recovering from a haemmarhoidectomy, it was really hard to find anything other than horror stories. So, for those whom are considering or about to have it done - here is a more positive and hopeful story!

I had my unwanted friends excised late Thursday afternoon and had NO PAIN AT ALL Thursday night or any time on Friday. I was kept in overnight as I was sick and dizzy from from anaesthetic - but no pain. Not much bleeding either. Just a bit of spotting. However I took the prescribed painkillers at the recommendation of the nurse and doctor.

When I got home on Friday I cooked dinner and even went for a short stroll. No pain still.

I drank copious amounts of water and took a lot more than recommended dose of lactulose and drank huge glass of prune juice. Also are lots of fruit and veg and some fish - no starchy food. I get constipated anyway (hence the piles) and knew the pain killers would make it worse.

Saturday - started off not so bad. My bottom was now sore and was very black and blue when I looked. Plus very swollen. As many have stated, it looks like more external piles have arrived. Had my first BM. Not horrendous at all. It was very loose so i think that helped. Some blood but no real pain. Got in shower afterwards to clean up then sat in bath for 30 mins. Then wrapped a frozen water filled condom in a tea towel and applied this to the sore area. Bliss! Yes it was unpleasant for about an hour but not unbearable.

The worse thing on Sat and Sun was feeling nauseous and vomiting. Possibly the antibiotics - not sure. Bottom sore and definitely uncomfortable after BMs but still not unbearable - nasty but not horrendous. Gone off of food so struggled to eat. Still having lots of lactulose and water. Sunday eve had 2nd BM of the day (perhaps a bit too much lactulose!) and went to bed with another frozen condom. Felt sorry for myself and under tgecweather, but not rolling in agony!

Monday (today). No sickness today (yay!). Took meds with some porridge so think that may have helped. BM not a problem at all and after a 5 min freeze with the condom it was fine. Bleeds after BM and a bit messy but a quick shower sorts that out. Feel soon much better!Considering stopping or at least reducing the painkillers.

Advice over all? Drink loads of water. Take plenty of stool softener. Get your water filled condoms in the freezer and dont panic. Oh and get one of those things you put around the bottom of the loo to rest your feet on so you are in a better "squatting " position on the loo.

It isn't a pleasant experience but no way near as horrendous as I feared.

Also, Im.a therapist who specialises in anxiety so did what I tell my clients to do and stopped googling when I couldn't find any positive experirnces. Do not terrify yourself with horror stories! Also, Ad a hypnotherapist, I have been doing lots of self-hypnosis for rapid healing.

I know it will still be sore and bleed for a while yet, but 4 days in it is definitely getting better.

I had the surgery three weeks ago. I am almost fully recovered. The pain was manageable with ibuprofen the first week. It did hurt but no where near what some folks have experienced. the first few BMs were no treat but I expected that. Take lots of citracel to make it easy and get a squatty potty. Also get a squeeze bottle because wiping is harsh. The second week I was off ibuprofen but still had occasional pain. But the end of the second week, I only experienced pain when I sneezed or coughed. I think the worst part is the bleeding and leaking. I am still wearing a maxi pad but the leaking is almost non existent now. The doctor told me since the area is moist, the scabbing process is what causes the leaking...not pooping!

Thank you very much for your encouraging story you just made this easier for me. Thank you. God bless you and all the sufferers on this board.

I really needed to read this now. I am supposed to have the surgery in a few weeks and everything I have read has really scared me to death. This makes me feel better and I hope my outcome is as good as yours.

I had a hemmorroidectomy 5 days ago and i regret it more than anything else in my life. The pain is excruciating, worse than 11mm kidney stones, worse than natural childbirth. I have an extremely high pain tolerance and I'm genuinely shocked by how much I'm struggling. I never post on these kinds of threads I'm hoping to help whoever reads this. If you can avoid this operation, do it. I had my piles for almost 10 years (too embarrassed to discuss them with a dr) and i would have gladly kept them if i had known it would be this bad. And I'm not even talking about the pain with a bowel movement.... pooping razor blades is the icing on this cake

Hi....I am to due for an external haemorridectomy....I wanted to ask what was your experience 2-3 months post the operation...was it complete symptomatic relief or was there were still issues

I'm 2 years post surgery. Complete symptomatic relief from the pain and hemorrhoids within 2-3 months. As someone else mentioned, the 'roids send wrong signals about the elimination process. That takes awhile to normalize. What took me the longest was getting used to the idea that I didn't have to plan around my going to the bathroom. Now two years out, absolutely no pain, don't think about going. When I have the urge, I go to the bathroom, do my business and go back to whatever I was doing. Like all people, I have occasional runs and constipation. But the 'roids are no longer a thought in my head except sometimes when I think about it, I am so happy to have them gone.

Just wanted to add another story to the group here.

I'm a 41-year-old male (in exceptional health, the doctor said, even though I'd like to lose about 30lbs) and have been suffering from grade 3 hemorrhoids since my late 20s. My doctor at the time prescribed me creams and sent me on my way. Of course, the creams did nothing and eventually I had two grade 3, one grade 2, and one of the grade 3 was pushing to become grade 4.

I got booked for a consult with a general surgeon here in Calgary, Alberta, and he agreed that I needed the surgery. He warned me it would be extremely painful.

Of course, over the years I had done a ton of reading on the issue and read all the horror stories you've read. I was terrified, and I don't get scared easily.

Please... If you're suffering from these, don't wait. Get the surgery. I was so scared I almost cancelled more than a couple times and lost sleep worrying right up to my surgery date. I'm so glad I didn't.

I had my hemorrhoidectomy about 48 hours ago and since then I've experienced absolutely no pain whatsoever. None. The most would be a "sense of discomfort", and that's just trying to get up from laying down. Oh, and that damned gauze packing they put in you after surgery. That was uncomfortable for the first few hours I was home, until I just removed it.

I also was lucky and have had no issues at all urinating. Sometimes I lose pressure, but I just focus on relaxing and it all works out.

I just had my first bowel movement after the surgery and not only was there no blood in the stool, there was no pain. No burning, either. And it took all of about 10 seconds to empty my bowels.

Here's what I did to help:

1) Try to make sure you are "empty" when you go for your surgery. I had broth for dinner the night before, and with the enema I had to do in the morning to prepare, I was good and empty.

2) For the day immediately after your surgery eat only clear foods, like broth.

3) The day after your surgery, eat nothing but fresh veggies (carrots, snap peas, cauliflower, broccoli, etc), and maybe a very little meat. I enjoyed a nice kielbasa sliced up with the veggies. I also had some tasty sour cream dip for the veggies. For dinner I had some chicken noodle soup. I also had about 1/2 cup of All Bran Buds, as I've found them to be a great source of fibre.

4) Drink SO much water. Force yourself to drink water. Have a glass or bottle with you all the time. This is very important, with the fibre and stool softeners! You must have a ton of water in you to make your bowel movement smooth.

5) Take a stool softener like docusate sodium 3x a day, with your pain medication.

6) My doctor prescribed Tylenol 3, but I only took 3 of them, the day/night immediately after surgery. Since I felt no pain, the next morning I stopped taking those and just took one 400mg ibuprofen every 6 hours. It's been working just fine and I'm not even sure I need those, but I'm going to keep taking them for a couple more days at least.

7) I cannot stress this one enough: Get a Squatty Potty or similar product. I have one of that brand and another that is two pieces (one for each foot) that I like a bit more and was cheaper on Amazon. Do not sit on the toilet. Squat. This is absolutely crucial, and I guarantee once you get used to it, you'll never sit on the toilet again. This is how your body is supposed to eliminate.

8) Get flushable baby wipes and a squirt bottle bidet. Toilet paper will be very rough, so you want something soft to clean up with.

9) I bought a pack of 12 Depends for men to deal with the bleeding/discharge. I tuck a gauze pad between my cheeks, and put these Depends on and that seems to be dealing with the situation. Again, no pain, but yes there is some blood and discharge.

One additional thing that only you folks might appreciate: I just had my first bowel movement in 15 years where I didn't have to push ping pong ball sized hemorrhoids back up inside me and I'm so happy I'm almost giddy. What an incredible sense of freedom!

As I said, I'm only 48 hours out, and I know I'll have a couple of weeks at least where I'll need to be careful and take it easy, but so far I'm so happy with the outcome and would wholeheartedly recommend getting them dealt with if you are suffering from them.

If I have any additional thoughts or experience any additional issues I'll post here again, but otherwise please assume I'm doing better every day :)

I hope this helps you, at least a little bit!

Scott

One additional modification (after my second bowel movement, the evening of the first) would be to watch the number of stool softeners you use. I am a little loose right now, but still no pain (even when using the toilet, so long as I squat) or blood in the stool.
