I have been fighting an opiod addiction for years. I have a great deal of pain, was on prescribed oxycontin for two years and have been on and off subutex enough to know it is not what I want to detox too or from later on. I have learned that Naltrexone is used to block the craving for opiods and wonder why it is not used instead of methadone or suboxone as it is not addictive and relieves the craving, though not the pain. Is there a way I can obtain Naltrexone over the counter ( in Canada?) or do I need a Dr.'s prescription, and if so, what Dr. Can you recommend one i n the Charlottesville, Va area? thanks. I am desperate.
Naltrexone brings about the withdrawal. It's used in hospitals for overdoses. So if you want to get off opiates, you would only take naltrexone AFTER you got through the withdrawal...
maybe you can get a prescription for Clonidine (not Klonipin, which is a benzodiazepine) as Clonidine keeps the withdrawal at bay by keeping the BP down, and it's also a pain killer. It is sedating, however. For me that was helpful in withdrawal.
I thought it was a Godsend. So get the clonidine for the withdrawal period and (btw it also reduced cravings) and if you still feel cravings, THEN get the naltrexone. I believe you can get both in Virginia so look for either an addiction specialist or a shrink and see what they can do.
