I agree with your post 100%. I too am a runner and was reluctant to being laid up forever! Upon having surgery for bunion correction, and predislocation of the 2nd and 3rd metatarsal, I have to say, it went quite well. I expected "pain" that never came. There was a minimal amount of discomfort but nothing like I have read about. In fact, I didn't take any meds for a number of reasons. I took ibuprophen 3 x on the 3 day after surgery. That's it! I was diligent with the icing and elevating. I used crutches/walker around the house for the first 2 weeks. If walking a very short distance I was able to walk with a hard boot on my heel. I am now 4 1/2 weeks post op and have to say it is going well. I am excited to see the xrays at my next dr appt. I am still donning a soft cast with hope of that coming off as well. This swelling isn't too bad. After standing for a while, of course, it's more significant. So, I keep elevating! Thanks for posting a positive note. Good luck and happy recovering!!
: )
I just had bunion surgery on both of my feet at the same time and have had a similar experience as this person. Very little pain. I got a little over confident yesterday (day 7 after surgery) and was on my feet for a bit to long so did experience some pain last night. Nothing a little ibubrofen couldn't handle. I too was warned of how awful and painful the surgery was. I am thrilled that I did it and very happy there has been no excessive pain. So long as I follow the Dr'.s insructions for the next week I feel confident I will be back to normal soon.
Hi, I'm four weeks adter bunion surgery and everything's been great. Hardly any pain, just quite a lot of swelling, probably made worse by me not sitting down enough. I've never geared of an ice machine. However, one side effect which is bothering me is that my toe feels quite numb and although I can move the toe a its base, I can't bend it downwards, even slightly. Has anyone else has this and do you think it's permanent.
Hi to fellow Bunion sufferers,
I'm a little over 24 hours post op Bunionectomy with metatarsal ostectomy and fixation right foot it may be a little early to report have had no major post op pain. I have been searching the Internet for some positive post op posts and was glad to find sweetlana's ! I have been suffering with bunion pain for over 10 years but recently made the decision when I could no longer enjoy walking , going to the gym or just relaxing with the extreme pain. I too was scared about the surgery and long recovery period and of course the pain afterwards, I do not expect this journey to be a piece of cake but was starting to feel like checking my bandages to make sure I had the Bunionectomy because of the horror stories. My next appointment with md is on the 8th or 5 days from surgery date, my doc recommended to keep boot on until this date and to ice at the knee opening not sure if this is helping to alleviate pain that most post op sufferers experience. Ps can feel my toes numbness from surgery site gone.
Thanks as I am exactly the same age as you with exactly the same activities being affected by my left foot. I have surgery schedled for May 1st but have heard the same cautions. I use doctors only for well checks so surgery is a major undertaking. So glad to read your post. Would really like to hear about the overall outcome 2 years later.
I had my right bunion surgery a week ago. My experience so far is amazing! I have had had little to no pain and am learning to balance and reduce my meds ;). Thank you for posting such positive notes on your surgery. I heard scary stories but that the end was worth it so I decided to do it. I still have to do foot #2, but am SO looking forward to days of no pain. I also appreciate the updates by week as this has been the longest week ever and I am so curious about what weeks 3 and 4 and 5 etc will hold.
I had bunion surgery on Feb. 20. My doc prescribed Vicodin and I used it every four hours for the first three days. After that I didn't need it. I also kept my foot elevated and used an ice pack once in awhile for no longer than 10 min. I did not use crutches at all; just had the boot.
Hey guys, glad to hear my little story people so many people! I'm happy to report that I haven't experienced a single issue since my surgery and have been doing quite a bit of hiking- backpacking, actually! :) I wish all of you fast recovery, and enjoy your painfree walks!
Hi! I just had my surgery done 2 weeks ago and they took off stitches this morning..
I am so scared to walk in the surgical shoe and only have been using crutches!! my doc said i need to practice in the boot
Sweetlana, do you have any advice?? I only use crutches and havent started in the shoe..
By when did you actually start taking steps? I am at work now but have my feet up on pillows...
Any advice will help!
Hey, glad the surgery went well and the stitches are off! Well done!
I was actually able to walk right away, in a shoe, and never used crutches, but every single procedure is different and I'd totally rely on what your doctor tells you. Did he/she give you any exercises to do? I remember getting a bunch...you need to regain a lot of your foot/toe flexibility so I'd probably try to be as active as your doc allows you to be. Good luck with your recovery!
