someone help please
im 5'10 and lost weight to a point of being 8 stone 4 or something
i gradually put on weight (about 5 or 6 pounds) and stayed at that weight for a month or two and my periods came back
best thing u can do is cut down on exercise
i seriously think that was what caused the problem with me and not the food as i did maintain quite a healthy diet :S
just hang in there, i know its the most annoying thing everrr

you have to keep going with the weight gain until your body decides its a the right weight for you. i don't look at the bmi charts anymore, the 'healthy' weight is when the body functions properly, and thats when i have my periods.
keep going, you'll get there :-)x
It's comforting to hear that others have got their periods back by gaining more weight and reducing excerise levels though.

Hi
I'm a bit confused. In the last year and 1/2 I've managed to recover from an annorexic weight whereby I lost my menstrual cycle for a while, it then came back and it was regular for quite a few months. I still exercise (about once every other day or some weeks less - once or twice a week) and am now at bmi of 18.7. I have beenH diagnosed and am on medication for an underactive thyroid - maybe caused as a result of the ed?? they've up-ed my medication and then found it to be to high (giving me a slight over active thyroid) then downed it again, but in between all these transitions I've not had a menstrual cycle now coming up to the 3 month mark. I don't understand why not... in a way i'm happy about it (I'm not sure why, and i know i shouldn't be) but in another way its a bit worrying. Has any one else with a previous ed experienced gaining their cycle back and then having gained some weight, losing it again?
Thanks

I feel exactly the same. I've put on 5kg on my doctor's recommendation but still no period. I also don;t want to be fat and infertile! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Hi honey, I had the exact same problem as you a few years ago and I can tell you what may be the problem. Although you are at a healthy weight for your height according to the bmi number on a chart, your current weight is most likely not your body's natural "happy weight"; my doctor calls this your setpoint, the weight at which your body needs to be in order to menatruate. This is different for everyone, and yours is most likely higher the weight you are currently at. Most people are not naturally on the "lower healthy side" unless they are genetically predisposed to be thin. I don't want to assume, but I am guessing that, like me years ago, you only wanted to gain to the lowest possible weight that would qualify you as healthy/no longer underweight and have avoided gaining any more while you wait for your period to return. I know this is hard to hear, but please understand that we cannot fight our genetics. If your body needs to be at a higher weight in order to function normally then you will not get your period unless you stop restricting and allow your body to reach that point. Another thing to consider is your body fat percentage. We females need a certain amount of fat in our bodies in order for our reproductive system to produce enough estrogen and balance other hormones necessary for the menstrual cycle to occcur. Again, the amount of fat is different for everyone, and it may be more then you are comfortable wig, but you will have to learn to accept it. This was my experience because although I was at a healthy weight for my height, It was mostly muscle (I'm a runner/athlete) and my body fat percentage was only 12%. My body needed more fat to get my period and I have since gained enough to start it again. I understand your frustration and anxiety over this, but I can tell you that will most likely get your period by 1) not over exercising, 2) stop restricting and actually listen to your body and eat whatever, whenever, however much you want, and 3) allow your body to gain to its natural weight and do not attempt to keep it at a low weight. This worked for me, and I cured myself of calorie counting obsession by finally just eating as much as I really wanted. I did not blow up like a balloon and neither will you because your body is smart and knows how much it wants/needs. All of this advice and knowledge came from my experience and what my doctor explained to me, and I sincerely hope it helps. Find a good doctor who knows a lot about this because she can probably help more than this response. Sorry for this long ramble but I hope this answers your question! Good luck :)
