I had lost weight too rapidly and was in the borderline-underweight region (not even terribly underweight at all), so I stopped getting my period. my doctor told me to gain weight and expected my period to show up. I am now at a healthy weight for my height, still on the lower healthy side, but considered healthy by BMI charts. And I still don't have my period! I don't understand why it hasn't come back even now that I am at a normal weight.
im having the same problem.i had no recover from anorexia and im now back to a healthy weight etc but i havent gotten my period back.im desperate for it as myself and partner are trying for a baby.

Eat more good fats like organic butter and coconut oil to get your periods back. The more you eat the better. Worked great for me!

I was in the same boat ladies for the past 5 months. I was on the pill for 7 years and after going off i never got my period. I was shocked b/c i was a healthy BMI as well (18.5) but after gaining weight, my period is back (i have a BMI of 20 now). My plan of attack was to switch to whole milk and increase my portion sizes and snack on nuts and dried fruit. Whole milk is packed with nutrients but there is a correlation between dairy fats and ovluation! Its really scary at first to put on weight but now i can't remember the last time i felt this great. My cholesterol has even gone down by 20 points.

same happened to me
im 5'10 and lost weight to a point of being 8 stone 4 or something
i gradually put on weight (about 5 or 6 pounds) and stayed at that weight for a month or two and my periods came back
best thing u can do is cut down on exercise
i seriously think that was what caused the problem with me and not the food as i did maintain quite a healthy diet :S
just hang in there, i know its the most annoying thing everrr

hi i too had anorexia, i went down to 6 stone at my lightest, im 5ft 7, so my periods stopped for nearly 2 years. they came back this year as i have finally reached a healthy weight but it was so frustrating. i was classed as a healthy weight at a little over 8 stone but they didnt return. i really had to try and eat more fats. in the end i had to put on another half a stone but finally they kicked in.

you have to keep going with the weight gain until your body decides its a the right weight for you. i don't look at the bmi charts anymore, the 'healthy' weight is when the body functions properly, and thats when i have my periods.

keep going, you'll get there :-)x

Hi, I had anorexia for about 10yrs. Now at a healthy weight (18.6 BMI). I exercise everyday (40mins), eat healthily but my periods just won't come back. My doctor has chkd me over and I don't have PCOS or any other obvious problems. I desperately want to start a family but right now, without having IVF treatment there is zero chance of that ever happening. I cry about it most days but the thought of gaining any more weight freaks me out and I'm scared that if i do put it on my periods still won't return then I'm just fat!
It's comforting to hear that others have got their periods back by gaining more weight and reducing excerise levels though.

Hi

I'm a bit confused. In the last year and 1/2 I've managed to recover from an annorexic weight whereby I lost my menstrual cycle for a while, it then came back and it was regular for quite a few months. I still exercise (about once every other day or some weeks less - once or twice a week) and am now at bmi of 18.7. I have beenH diagnosed and am on medication for an underactive thyroid - maybe caused as a result of the ed?? they've up-ed my medication and then found it to be to high (giving me a slight over active thyroid) then downed it again, but in between all these transitions I've not had a menstrual cycle now coming up to the 3 month mark. I don't understand why not... in a way i'm happy about it (I'm not sure why, and i know i shouldn't be) but in another way its a bit worrying. Has any one else with a previous ed experienced gaining their cycle back and then having gained some weight, losing it again?

Thanks

S*

Hello, I have the exact same problem, I have put on 11kg after being very underweight, and I am now at a BMI of 19.2 and thought my period should be here. However I asked a professional and the main rule of when to get a period is a BMI of 20. Your period will come when you reach that BMI. You don't need to put on weight fast, when you grow taller you eat more and the weight will eventually come on and you'll get your period. We're in this together!

Hi honey, I had the exact same problem as you a few years ago and I can tell you what may be the problem. Although you are at a healthy weight for your height according to the bmi number on a chart, your current weight is most likely not your body's natural "happy weight"; my doctor calls this your setpoint, the weight at which your body needs to be in order to menatruate. This is different for everyone, and yours is most likely higher the weight you are currently at. Most people are not naturally on the "lower healthy side" unless they are genetically predisposed to be thin. I don't want to assume, but I am guessing that, like me years ago, you only wanted to gain to the lowest possible weight that would qualify you as healthy/no longer underweight and have avoided gaining any more while you wait for your period to return. I know this is hard to hear, but please understand that we cannot fight our genetics. If your body needs to be at a higher weight in order to function normally then you will not get your period unless you stop restricting and allow your body to reach that point. Another thing to consider is your body fat percentage. We females need a certain amount of fat in our bodies in order for our reproductive system to produce enough estrogen and balance other hormones necessary for the menstrual cycle to occcur. Again, the amount of fat is different for everyone, and it may be more then you are comfortable wig, but you will have to learn to accept it. This was my experience because although I was at a healthy weight for my height, It was mostly muscle (I'm a runner/athlete) and my body fat percentage was only 12%. My body needed more fat to get my period and I have since gained enough to start it again. I understand your frustration and anxiety over this, but I can tell you that will most likely get your period by 1) not over exercising, 2) stop restricting and actually listen to your body and eat whatever, whenever, however much you want, and 3) allow your body to gain to its natural weight and do not attempt to keep it at a low weight. This worked for me, and I cured myself of calorie counting obsession by finally just eating as much as I really wanted. I did not blow up like a balloon and neither will you because your body is smart and knows how much it wants/needs. All of this advice and knowledge came from my experience and what my doctor explained to me, and I sincerely hope it helps. Find a good doctor who knows a lot about this because she can probably help more than this response. Sorry for this long ramble but I hope this answers your question! Good luck :)

Eat lots of soya beans - that helped me. For example tempeh, and edamame. It's supposed to increase your oestrogen levels. Also don't exercise as your body needs to prioritise it's energy into producing eggs and whatever else happens when you have a period I hope that helps!

I get it, I'm struggling with an eating disorder as well and have reached a low normal weight I really am afraid to gain more because I am currently the same weight as all my friends and Although I know what the typical low point normal weight Is, that is not a weight that works for me to be healthy as when I was healthy I weighed a lot more than I do now and all though i was not obese i was quite a lot more than what I'm at now although I was a little bit on the bigger side. I was quite young and hadn't growth spurted yet so I really don't know if I would have stayed at that weight if I hadn't stopped eating. Anyways, if anyone has any tips on how I could gain weight but not get fat that would be amazing as I am being pressured massively by my mom and concealer to gain weight, neither of which have any medical reason that I need to other then my period, I know there trying to help but it makes me quite nervous considering that as said before I am already the same as some of the healthy people I know so it is hard to process that what is healthy for some isn't healthy for my body. There pressuring is also causing me to seriously binge.. Please help thanks:)
