Just found this thread. Interesting I get a similar response when I'm particularly nervous about something. I do suffer from ptsd and general anxiety disorder. When I get anxious I usually get symptoms that I have had for years chest pain rapid heartbeat feeling like I have to move etc. lately however I get a new symptom pains from my back kidney area that sort of shoots/surges up my back and around to my chest area it's very frightening it doesn't last long but the lingering pain can stay for hours. I have hbp and I know this makes it rise as well.
I made the mistake of looking this up on google and of course scared my self silly. I recently had a full medical and had nothing out of the ordinary. My dr could not give me any answers except it's part of an adrenaline surge. I just don't know. Mark.

Did you ever find out what was causing the pain, I also suffer with the lower back pain and neck pain during situations that produce adrenaline. I would like to add that I also take omeprazole and have been having odd symptoms for many different things since I started taking them ( I have been on them for aprox 2 years ).

My guess: adrenaline causes the fight-or-flight response. Part of it is preparing your muscles for fight or impact. Many or most of your muscles get tight, including the ones in your neck.

Another part of the flight-or-flight response is to quickly shift blood from less urgently needed parts like the skin to other parts like muscles and brains. I do not know if the kidneys (no information available) could be considered "less urgent to use at full in an emergency". If that would be the fact, bloud could almost be "squeezed" out of them in a painfull way.

I am not a doctor, just info I found on wikipedia. If it would be that, it probably is nothing to worry about except that it is very enoying. Learning to manage sudden strong emotions may be the best but hard to realize easing.

Me too. Exactly how it is described. At work the first time in a meeting when about to make a point in front of a large audience. Takes your breath away... And I get it even now when I am getting slightly nervous about something.

I have started taking clonidine in a divided dose of .01mg x a day. I have had that horrible gripping pain during times of great stress (including when my husband died while driving his car when I was a passenger). I have had three situations since starting it that could have caused the gripping pain in my flanks, but now I feel no panic or anxiety as long as I remember to take my doses. I am also sleeping a lot better, too.

I know this is an old thread but j just wanted to comment in case I can help someone.

I also experience this pain during adrenaline rush situations in my lower back and have had this issue for about 20 years. I've gone to multiple doctors and most of them have never heard of it.

I've been able to deduce that this is a Symptom of having an issue with strained muscles between the discs in my back.

When I was in high school I got hit in the head playing football and it jammed my neck which has caused me lower back pain ever since.

This is also when I started getting the adrenaline rush pain. I went to a chiropractor and he told me that basically my injury caused the muscle between the discs in my back to be strained. It basically is like having a Charlie Horse in that muscle where it is permanently constricted due to being strained. The issue is is in the lower back where muscles are already strained regularly due to standing/sitting at work, so lots of people have this type of strain and don't really know it we just associate it with normal wear and tear from working. Basically most people have pain but have learned to live with it so long your mind kind of blocks it out. But when you have adrenaline rushes, it can make the muscle tense or inflamed, it's possible it may even be putting pressure on your spinal cord which causes the dibilating pain. ( I know when it happens to me the pain is bad enough to where I can't stand up)

A temporary fix was having electro stimulation on the muscle which makes the muscle untense. The problem is if you work at a job where you sit a lot or stand a lot the muscle tends to tense back up over time so the symptoms return.

I don't really know a permanent fix for this problem, but I do know that when I had the electro stimulation on my lower back the symptoms temporarily went away.

Unless you can afford to see a chiropractor every couple of weeks for the electrical treatment, I don't really know a permanent fix.

I'm 45 and in good health. I noticed four years ago when I had gotten very angry at work about a situation, that, like most of you, the pain was immense! It's happened maybe four times since. I researched a little and found this info about Addisons Disease.

Hello, I don't normally comment on threads, but I'm a 42 yo female and generally am very relaxed with no stress. Lately I've had some extreme stress pop up and the same pain all of you have described. I will try the electric stimulation on the lower back. I imagine it would help. I just wanted to reply to your post specifically because you can get TENS units (electrical stimulation) on Amazon now days and have your own therapy when you need it without having to pay a chiropractor. Hope that helps. I'm going to give it a try. I've had constant anxiety for a couple days and the back pain is just a killer.

You are not alone... Just last night I got into an argument and as soon as I yelled the pain kicked in so bad that I felt that my oxygen was leaving and i couldn't move... This started last year but really didn't pay too much attention by it. I honestly tjought it was just spasms... But after last night I realized that the only time that it occurs is when I'm mad or very excited... Going to my doctor on the 13th of July and hopefully they can help me...

Wow, I can't believe it! This is more common than I thought. I'm a 39 year old female and have had this happen a few times since my early 20's. I always assumed it was adrenalin.

I am so glad to read all the posts as I've been experiencing this condition for many years but didn't know what it was. I can go for weeks and months without an episode but today I've had rushes all day and my back hurts a lot. At least I know now what it is.
