I have had a small lump in the lower left side of my back for about 2 years now. I have always had lower back pain off and on so I never really linked the 2 together. Finally I went to the Dr and she informed me that it was most likely a fatty tumor or even a cyst. Just to make sure she sent me for an untrasound. Today she called back with the results and said she wasn't sure what it could be. she suggested maybe a lymph node? I have to go get a biopsy done with a surgeon and will keep you guys posted. Hope this helps.

I also have 2 lumps. One on each side of my back, near my waist. I found the first lump after having my youngest daughter, 3 years ago, and the second after having my son, 2 years ago. The lumps only used to hurt if I touched them, but now they are causing me back pain and pain that radiates down my buttocks, thighs, and legs. I am even getting severe back pain. After sitting down for just a few minutes, I feel like my body locks up into that position and getting up is extremely painful. For the past couple of days, the pain has been wrapping around my body and now even my stomach is in pain. They feel like sharp shooting, and stabbing pains. It's horrible. If any of you get these tumors removed, please post about how you feel afterward. Also, tell us bow your doctor found the tumors, because I have had crags and nothing shows up. I want to know what to tell the doctor when I go in to get these tumors checked out. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for posting your experiences as well. :-)

I have been suffering with these lumps (started with one, but has since increased, depending on the day) for about 4 years. I was originally told by my previous dr. that it was a torn muscle. I went to the chiropractor who advised there would be some markings, at least bruising on the skin if that was the case. I can't remember exactly what the chiro said it was, but he knew before asking or touching that it was really tender in the buttock muscle on the right side. Just recently, while pregnant with my first child, the pain worsened so I asked my OBGYN what it could be....he told me it was a fat deposit and said nothing more. I felt like that wasn't the case, but I really don't know.
My symptoms: my back will randomly "lock" and it is extremely painful to do anything, walk, sit, lay, etc. I can move the little lumps - just a little. They are on the left and right side of my lower spine just above my hips, predominately the right side & there is one main one that bothers me constantly. As I said before the pain radiates down into the muscle in my buttock and my hips (which makes carrying a baby even more uncomfortable as pregnancy progresses)
I would love to figure this out and have some relief....this has been going on for WAY too long! Help!

I have the same kind of lump above my left hip. I also have one in my lower left leg. Ive gotten scans on the one in the leg and nothing showerd up, The surgeon said it was a limpoma, and im almost certain its the same thing with my back. Im a horse trainer and I work at a Thoroughbred stable and I have to bend down a lot, so the one in my back drives me insane, the pain only gets really bad when i do a lot of bending down and ducking. I have an appointment for the one in my leg in march, and im probably gonna get it removed.

Hello everyone:
Today my Chiropractor finally diagnosed a movable lump 1" diameter, lower left side back, below hip bone. I felt the lump awhile ago, but assumed it was a muscle as I have been experiencing back muscle spasms. So seeing the Chiro help that. I had lower spine xrays yesterday, and see my family Dr Friday, and will have a MRI on Sunday for lower back pain. I hope the MRI shows the lump.
I too experience a nagging pain, wake up with my left leg asleep, tingling in my left leg alot, sometime radiates to my spine and around to my stomach. Could this also cause incontinence? Anyone experience it?
I will keep you posted, hoping I find the answer soon

I too have this, it isn't the lump that is causing the pain I dont think,I prety much am sore all the time and stiff, rom is gone and wake up throughout the night, just miserable to say the least but whenever the pain is at the worst that bump gets larger it seems. Whatever is causing the pain also caused/ causing the inflamation of the "lump". It is right above my hip on the right side. Sometimes I will move the wrong way and feel something move in the exact spot the lump is, inflaming it even more. Like yesterday I was laying in bed and sneezed and "pop", i felt/heard something move. I before have had this same thing happen and knew what was going to be ahead of me for the next week; helpless pain and misery. Back injurys take a toll on your mind and spirit as you can be doing ok, not experiencing any pain and able to think straight but after you have re-injured yourself so many times you prety much know what the inevitable furute of your life is and is just an emotional roller coaster(back pain is worst then what ppl know, and it happens to so many people it is thought of by many as something to be a norm, which it's not, its a very serious and unique condition/injury that affects every aspect of your body and life. Just because it happens all the time doesnt mean it isnt serious, kinda like the tennis star roger fedderer, he is the greatest tennis star ever and wins all the time but after a while people tend to forget/recognize his actual greatness just because he does it all the time and has become the norm, that is my quirky relation to people and their attitude/judgement toward people with back problems. It's like, if soo many ppl are complaining of it then it's not just ppl complaining, it means it is a serious condition. I think some people hold their selves superior to others by brushing them off as unable to deal with pain as well as themselves, and it might even be that people just don't want to hear it"my back hurts" and subconciously deem you as as lazy or a crybaby because they can't deal with you and your injury any longer.[even though a doctor says it is serious])
And it'll sometimes take me a week to get over it to where I can even sleep at night; i'll stay up for 35-40hrs wide awake becuz of the pain. I have all the symptoms to the T of a pinched nerve. Been out of work for 5 months and have no med insurance. Haven't even been able to get an mri. Losing everything.
Maybe if doctors weren't basing their huge annual salaries on insurance companies I could get some help. Just as insurance companies report huge profits, the med field does too. Is terrible people can't get help because they don't have med insur. Im 23 years old and had no idea my back was gonna go out. Maybe if I was 40-50 yrs old I would have had med insur but..ya..fuckd layin here in my bed smack dab in the middle of insurmerica.
As for the lump, I always thought it to be the disc i was feelin, am curious but really tho i have no idea.

I too have had this lump for several years. The first time I talked to my doctor, she said it was a muscle spasm. However, it has gotten bigger and more painful. I have been receiving regular treatment for my back pain for the last 2 and a half years, and everyone keeps telling me there is nothing they can do. I have been to physical therapy, 2 neurosurgeons, pain management specialist, general surgeon, had an MRI, x-rays, bone scan, EMG, you name it. And everyone keeps telling me the same thing. I have 2 bulged disks, deterioration of my lower spine, and arthritis in my facet joint - however, the lump is where the pain is. I also have pain radiating down into my leg, which they told me was sciatica due to the bulged disks. Everyone keeps telling me that it is just a lipoma and there is no way it is causing me any pain.
I went to a general surgeon and they would not remove it because they said it is not the source of my pain. I had 2 different sets of facet injections in my back (4 five inch needles each time) in which they inserted one of the needles right through the lump. It was the most painful thing I've ever experienced and did not help. That doctor seems to believe it is the arthritis in my facet joint that is causing the pain and wanted to burn the nerve ending with a hot needle!
I share everyone's frustration and feel a little better knowing that I'm not alone. Every time I walk out of a new doctor's office or get the results of another test, I'm crushed. I was starting to think it was psychological since all the doctors and specialists keep blowing me off. And cannot give me any relief.
I have another appointment with my doctor in 2 days. If I find a solution - I will be sure to post it!

I am dealing with the same problem for two years and I think I have the answer!! The lumps are called the "back mouse" and the treatment is multiple injections in each lump not one but 6-10 and that should end all pain. I am having this done in sept.

Hi, I've noticed a hard lump on the leftside of my lower back yesterday and have been worrying about it since! It's the size of a pea and doesn't hurt except when touched it feels like a slight pinch.
I can't go to the doctor till tomorrow and am ver worried since the lump is hard and can't be moved around, which I guess means it's not a cyst?! Has anyone experienced a hard lump that doesn't move when touched? If so do you have any information about this? Thank you..

About the movable lumps. I've been a massage therapist for nearly twenty years and I have felt hundreds of them.
What they are is a back mouse. Other terms are: Episacral lipoma, iliac crest pain syndrome, multifidus triangle syndrome, and lumbar fascial fat herniation.
In about 10% of the people who have them they can cause excruciating back pain, or refer pain down the leg or into the knee. They mimic a herniated disc.
The true test to see if the back mouse is causing your pain is to have it injected with anesthetic. If that makes the pain go away, you have found the culprit. The anesthetic wears off in a couple hours.
I do not know of any technique to get rid of a back mouse. except surgery.
Oral pain killers do not help, so do not take them. You may get relief from ice or topical pain ointments. Massage of the muscles may help, but back mice should not be massaged.

Cured! I have had a "fatty" lump on my lower left back for years. First DOC said oh its nothing. That was eight years ago. The exterior lump never changed in size.....but finally after what everyone has done and looked at in all these forums...I went to a surgeon, he saw the small lump, took it out ....BUT the small exterior lump was two inches deep into my back causing all types of discomfort and mobility issues. I am still recovering from sugery but I already feel better. GET the MRI, xrays do not show tissues and some tumors. DO NOT take the "oh take this anti-inflamatory drug"....I fixed my core problem and refused to take bandaid solutions like pain killers to buy time. Sometimes of course this is the only option but eight years later I learned for me it was not the case. Hope this helps others suffering from what I did for many years.

I have had lumps in my lower back for a couple years now. I kept describing them as pickled eggs because they would move if I pressed on them and moved my hand up (they were located to the left and right of my spine above my hips around the "love handle" section of your body. I talked to two doctors who just shrugged it off and told me I'd have to live with them or that I "needed more meat back there."
I saw a dermatologist a couple of weeks ago about the lumps because sitting down, standing up, sit-ups, turning over, etc were all becoming painful. It turns out they were Angiolimpoa or fatty tumors with blood vessels. They removed them from both sides of my lower back. Oh, and these annoying lumps could only really be seen when I was bent over at a 90 degree angle so that’s how the surgery was done to remove them… But if you have lumps like that you should see a dermatologist they deal with tumors, and cancerous things all of the time. Many regular doctors tend to diagnose this incorrectly.
