I am experiencing exactly the same thing..and it came out of nowhere. I am very active and train for powerlifting meets. Needless to say I earn plenty of frequent flyer miles at my local Chiropractor to adjust neck and back. About 5 days ago during lunch I swallowed and felt a jolt, almost electric shock like pain on the left side of my throat when food touched it..the shocklike pain shot straight into my left upper pectoral muscle and I could also feel it just below my left shoulderblade. Not knowing what to do I went back to my Chiropractor and he was puzzled.. we tried neck and back adjustments to see if a nerve was pinched.. my back and neck are normal but swallowing harder foods is still quite the experience. To the point that I am chewing everything, even pills that are meant to be swallowed whole to avoid the shock. The best way I can describe the pain is an electric shock.. It would be good if there are any MD's on here that could give me some pointers.

I've had difficulty swallowing for days now it feels like things get stuck going down and I get pain in my upper back. I also have anxiety and I've been too two different doctor and had one X-Ray they just say its acid reflux but I don't think so. I never even had heartburn when I was pregnant. Any one heard anything helpful from a doctor?

I just began experiencing difficulty in swallowing but I do not have the shoulder/neck/back pain others have listed. I haven't had a solid meal since nearly a week ago because everything gets stuck.

I am scheduled to see a gastroenterologist today! I am scared but excited to have someone finally look down my throat and see what is going on. I have a suspicion that it is due to GERD. My husband and I have terrible eating habits and eat too late at night and also do not eat the most healthiest of meals. This can cause acid reflux which can cause the tightening of the esophagus.

My mom had been diagnosed with Barretts esophagus last year and had surgery to remove her esophagus. She is 78 years old and is doing very well. She is cancer free!

I will let you know tomorrow what happened.

I have had a sore throat for the past few days, and just this morning I sarted to get a lump in my throat whenever I swallow. It feels a bit like when I pill goes down dry, but not quite as sharp. I don't have any f the back pain you are describing, but the 'discomfort' is driving me nuts as it gets much worse when I lie down, conseqently I can't sleep. Everything feels fine when I swallow solid food or a gulp of liquid, just when I swallow dry, I feel like gagging and almost throwing up.

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Thanks

I had the same symptoms that many of you listed. Mine turned out to be LOW stomach acid (hypochlorhydria). In my case, manganese stopped the symptoms. Apparently all the calcium/magnesium supplememts I was taking were antagonistic with manganese, which promotes stomach acid.

I thought I was having a heart attack. I am on here at 5am and saw all the postings and it matches what I have to the T. Woke up with pain in my chest like something was stuck. Its setting off a panic attack and that is not a good thing. But I am glad to hear that its not all just in my head and that there are others out there that know how it feels. I drank some water and that hurt. I ate a piece of toast and that hurt my chest also. Mine may be because a few years back I had a gastric bypass and they changed alot of things around for the procedure. If anyone else out there has also had a gastric bypass and then this problem I sure would like to know. Thanks!

I'm actually surprised to see that so many other people have these symptoms. I've been have simialr pains (right upper back, shoulder blade, neck area) and it feels like something is in my thorat when i swallow. It's happened to me before. I do have acid reflux once in a while (including this past week) but I also have back and spinal issues. I woke up with my pain a couple mornings ago (which is how it usually starts) and I'm pretty sure I just slept badly on the pillow and threw out my spinal cord a bit. I think the pain from swallowing is due to a nerve being pinched from my spine being a mit misaligned. However, I did not consider the acid reflux or anxiety to be a part of the problem. I;m not surprised that a general doctor is clueless about these kinds of symptoms. I think it's more in the realm of orthopedic/chiropratic/physical therapy. I went to a chiropractor the firt time I have these symptoms and the therapy helped readjust my spine and the pain left.

I have similar symptoms. Mine started with a stiff neck feeling - or more like when you sit is a weird position for too long. The next morning the pain was worse and then the pain swallowing happened.

I of course went online to see what I can find. In my search I found information on injury to the trapezius muscle. Actually on this site as well.
The response in this link https://www.steadyhealth.com/Very_strange_back_pain_when_I_swallow__t89167.html

I have been working out and it seems that I have pulled a muscle. It does feel like the pain is getting better. This is the second day - I think I am going to give it another day or two to see what happens. If it doesn't feel better I will have no choice but to go to the doctor.

My symptoms are exactly what everyone else here has been describing. I am currently suffering from these pains for the second time! It all started a month ago right after I ate a really dry piece of pizza and it felt the pizza was stuck in my throat. I disregarded this and continued on with my day. As each day went on, the feeling as if I had something caught went away but the EXTREME pain I received when swallowing was horrendous. I could feel the pain going down my chest and then it felt like someone was using a cheese grater on my back(Only way I could think to describe it!) So I went to the doctor after 5 days of this and he told me that my throat was probably cut by the pizza and when food or liquid would pass through my throat, my back would spasm as a reaction. He told me it would go away by itself and it did a few days after that! I should also mention that there were no symptoms of reflux such as burning, it was just severe pain.

Now a month later I have something almost identical. I woke up a few days ago feeling like mucus was caught in my throat and I thought I was catching a cold. The next day I felt a little bit of pain while drinking coffee. By the next day, I realized I had the same thing again but not as severe and a bit different. This time around, the pain isn't so much stabbing as it is a burning pain. I can eat things and withstand the pain whereas the first time it was completely unbearable. Also, when I eat very small pieces of food I feel no pain and I feel no pain drinking water. I am starting to believe that this is acid reflux because of the time this occurred. I should mention that acid reflux is extremely common in my family(my 3 brothers and father all have it). It is summer so I don't have much to do but eat so eating a lot of spicy chips, 5 or 6 cans of soda, and a few cups of coffee multiple times have become a daily thing. I know that is terrible but I have not been gaining weight and I exercise somewhat. With the way my diet has been and with the stress I have been putting on myself, I think the result was acid reflux. I am going to wait a few more days for it to just go away like it did last time and then maybe go to the doctor. I am currently just working on changing my diet.

Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to put in my 2 cents! And to make everything worse, I have a canker sore :-(

Hi all,
I decided to keep this thread going since there are quite a few of us experiencing pain "after swallowing" in the upper back.
Mine came on kind of sudden. I don't remember having any issues all of August so I can only pinpoint that it came on early Sept. I am a hairdresser and I work LONG hours with my arms in the air ALOT and left arm fatigue as well as upper back pain, shoulder blade pain and neck pain. So I remember that week that my neck was popping mysteriously out of the blue with a sharp pain following. Within a few days of that, I woke up and remember eating and swallowing food and my upper back would hurt just alongside the shoulder blade. I had assumed that I slept wrong. It felt alot like a muscle pain. So I blew it off for a week or two thinking it would go away. ...It did not. So I then began using a hard golf ball in the area that hurts when I swallow thinking it was muscoskeletal pain. Ironically I do still have the neck pain, muscle tension, and shoulder blade pain...but this darn pain in the back with swallowing food is driving me crazy. It has now been 6 weeks. I don't feel it much with liquids...but food I do. I don't feel like I am having trouble swallowing....just the pain as the food passes by that certain area in my back. I have had a chest x-ray, EKG, bloodwork and recently as a day ago...a barium swallow. I am still waiting results and VERY worried since I have looked up WAY too much on the internet. I will post here in a few days when I get my results. Would like to hear from others what your symptoms are with the back pain upon swallowing and if you have had any tests and what the results were. I also have anxiety and huge stress issues due to my job, and spend alot of time on the computer. Could this all be muscle related? Does anyone know if a nerve or muscle spasm can cause pain with swallowing in the shoulder blade area??? ?

For 6 days now i have had this feeling in my throat that feels like something is stuck just above my colar bone to the right. A few seconds after eating or drinking i get a sharp stabbing pain in the right side of my back just under my shoulder blade and also a tight heavy feeling in my chest. I have been to the doctor today and he didnt have a clue what it was. He thought that maybe i have a throat ulcer and that would explain the feeling of a blocked throat. He perscribed Ranitidine tablets which treats ulcers in the digestive tract and also helps the stomach make less acid. He also sent me for a chest X-ray and i get the results tomorrow. After searching the net i thought it could be gallstones. I think he thought i was just crazy! I'm hoping the chest X-ray shows up something because i cant take much more of this. I'm also feeling very tired. Fingers crossed!
