It is natural to feel nervous about surgery, but it sounds like your in good hands. It's also good that you will be taking a couple of weeks off of work to rest. Right now you can still a slight edge where my graft was placed, but that is only if you are REALLY looking for it. I was also told that the slight edge will also blend in completely over time. Eventhough there is a slight edge, my eye looks a lot better than it did will the pinguecula on it!
Good Luck and Take care!
P.S. I don't mind emailing YOU, but I don't feel comfortable giving my email out on a public site on the internet :-(
P.S. I will try to post a pic of my eye soon!

Hey there.
Yes I feel like im in good hands, yeah he said there will be an edge, I have a little more pinkish area on my left eye where the bigger one is so i guess there will be a little join cause its pinker rather than whiter. But im sure he will make a good accurate job, and do his best. And over time it will become less and less hopefully.
I understand about your email addy, I actually posted mine up here, and no one but the appropriate person mailed me so its not bad. Anyway I understand your concerns, and privacy of course. pictures would be excellent, before and afters I hope! ;)
Hope you are well! :)

hi sonn001, hope you are doing well. Did you have the surgery with Dr. Hovanesian at Harvard eye yet? I am considering contacting them soon but don't know how I was going to get regular check ups after the surgery since I live 7 hrs drive from there. Wondering how you were you doing that.
Is there a better way to contact you..

Hi TSG7
Surgery is scheduled for next tuesday, am having all sorts of doubts and concerns, but really want to do it. I guess my main concern is the 'edging' is it that noticeable and is it getting less and less?? also have you developed any other vessels?? I am just wanting to make sure that it will be an improvement rather than a mistake. He was and is very confident and so was/am I but its been soo long since our meeting that I am starting to think of all these things. I know its bad at first and I am prepared but someone else on here said they would never get 2 eyes done at once, because of the toughness of recovery. So has made me a little aprehensive obviously.
The steroid drops and tablets I am on and have been for a few weeks now are amazing, they keep my eyes very clear and white which is also why im having doubts. But i am fully aware of the importance of short term use of these products and that they are not getting rid of my pinguecula but its hard as they are looking very good.
Anyway would really like to know how you are going and what your eyes look like now.
Have posted my email addy for you previously, did you get it??
Hope you are well and look forward to hearing from you again......

Does anyone have an update or pics to add to the pinguecula autograft thread? I am anxious about getting the surgery done and am looking for recommendations on doctors in Asia. I would love to hear from you. Ret.
Hi all
It has been about 3 days since my surgery, and I am just resting up and trying to get better. Found the actual surgery pretty good, was wierd being awake and being able to see various things they were doing, but no pain. Went quite quickly and then I was outta there.
The surgeon was surprised to see that i did not have too much redness and said I would be well improved in a week, they were not nearly as bad as I anticipated. I am a little sore around my eyes and face but i should improve everyday. Main thing is that im feeling dizzy and generally unwell, but anyway I guess it throws you around a bit. Just wanted to let everyone know that all went well. The grafts look very good, I had stitches for mine, but i am glad as i feel safer and that they will stay in place while healing. He put the stitches under the surface so you can't feel them all tell they are there. He has done a very tidy job, and its cool to see the pinguecula gone after all these years. You can only see graft edges on one eye, but he said that will blend over time. The other one (the bigger ping weirdly enough) is looking the best so far.
Anyway I dont look like a monster and was pleasently surprised when i looked in the mirror after surgery. :) Just feeling a little sorry for myself but i have lots of yummy food and DVD's to amuse myself with. :)
Sonia :)

I have pinguecula on 1 eye, on the out corner .... nobody seems to care or notice it, but I do ... and I feel like I have something in there ....
I was wondering if you knew any good surgeon in NYC or you could ask your great surgeons for a recommandation in NYC ....
Thanks for any help!!!!

Hi Grumpy ( great name )
I am in New Zealand so can't help you with that, but Harvard seems to be the goer..I recommend getting in contact with them.
Anyway been about 3 weeks since my surgery (from very skilled surg)
and all is well, still got a long way to go but its amazing what they can do.
My surgery went very well and they actually look worse than they did at the time of surgery, but thats not bad at all.
My eyes feel 10 times better and don't get as dry and irritated.
So is a good move IF you have the RIGHT surgeon.
Good luck.

You are saying that after the surgery you eye look worse than before when you had the pinguecula?? How is that possible? so you had the surgery mostly because you eyes were dry and iritated all the time, not for aesthetical reasons?
I would get it only for aesthetical reasons ..... should I?

Sonn, I have a few questions for you or anyone else who has had the surgery.
1.) If you are traveling to get the surgery done then how do you get the follow up visits? How many follow-ups do you need and how often?
2.) I have 2 pings in EACH eye. On the nasal side AND on the ear side. (Yes it stinks to be me!) Do you think they would charge me per eye or per ping?
3.) How much money am I looking at if I wanted all 4 pings removed on both eyes?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my questions. I have gotten to the point where I think my pings are so ugly that I don't want to socialize anymore! I feel disfigured and unattractive. Not to mention the dry and uncomfortable feeling I constantly experience.

Well no, I hated they way they looked, and they also got really sore and red. Since the surgery they have felt a lot better and they also LOOK a lot better. I mean on the day of surgery they were a little red and veiny, but not bad at all, surgeon and I were both surprised. Its been around 4 weeks or so? and they bascically look similar, but because they werent that bad its hard to tell. I was told that it was a long recovery and to be patient. I have stopped using the steroids as im into my natural way, and has been hard for me taking all the meds they prescibe, I got quite sick off the tabs and regret taking them, but all good now. :)
But my point is, I am VERY happy I had them done and by the surgeon I was recommended to, and he has done a great job, you can't see joins or anything and its only been this long, so will only get better.
My main thing is that I have stitches in mine...(surgeon decided for his reasons) and they were put under eye surface so could not feel (other than one rogue one, that REALLY hurt but went away) anyway after a while they developed little blisters on them so the eye could easily slide over them and are comfortable. So those little areas are the only bits that are red and still got a bit of healing to do.
All in all its all good, Am very glad I had them done, they look great (even though not healed) and they feel A LOT better..People can't notice, and the people that do know, say "hey have you had your surgery yet?" I did not have to wear sunglasses inside or have not felt self conscious about them at all, even in the first few weeks...
So find a SKILLED surgeon and go for it! :)

Hi Lisaw,
I understand your pain! Before I had my pterygium in one eye and my ping in my other eye removed, I was in a lot of distress . . . my eyes were always irritated and red and I was embarrassed to socialize with anyone because I thought they were always starring at my eyes. However, I'm THRILLED to report that since my surgery on May 9th, my eyes are perfectly white and irritation free!!!!! I flew from Florida to Harvard eye in Laguna Hills, CA. so I can answers some of your questions. . . .
1) First I contacted Harvard Eye and told them I was interested in flying there for surgery (since Dr. Hovanesian really is an expert in the newest surgical techniques) then they had me email them pics of my eyes so that Dr. Havanesian could determine if surgery was a viable option for me. Once Dr. Hovanesian agreed to perform the surgery on me, I flew in on May 7th two days before the surgery, meet with him on the 8th for a pre-surgical evaluation and had my surgery in both eyes on the 9th. Dr. Hovanesian wanted me to stay in California for a week after surgery so he could see how well I was progressing and I flew home the next day, so I stayed in Cali for a total of 9 days. Dr. Hovanesian tried to minimize the time I had to stay in Cali, so he recommended that I make a 3 week follow-up with a local eye doctor in Florida.
2) You will have to specifically ask the doctor you select, but I was charged per eye, and actually got off lucky because there is some weird law in Cali that states that if patients are having eye surgery in both eyes on the same day then they can only bill full price for one eye and half price for the second eye. For example, I paid a total of 3,300 (2,200 for the first eye and 1,100 for the second)
3) Not sure, it depends on the doctor you select.
Also, I know there was another person on these boards that recommended not to get both eyes down at the same time, however, I'm really glad I did, because I was planning on laying low and recovering from the surgery, so why not recover in both eyes at the same time? Full recovery for me was 3 months and I definitely wouldn't have wanted to wear sunglasses and lay low for 3 months due to one eye recovering and then have to lay low for another 3 months for the other eye. Also, just to mention, Dr. Hovanesian said that he preferred to not do both eyes at the same time, but if if was going to be too hard for me to get more time off and have to buy another plane ticket to get the other eye done at a later time then he would agree to doing both eyes at once.
Hope this helps!
P.S. All in all, the doctor that you select is the most important decision to make, think about it . . . they're operating on you eyes and you want someone you can trust! I would recommended that you consider Harvard Eye, even though it might cost a little more to fly out there, you would be assured that you would be in good hands.

I am due to see surgeon in the next few days (approx 4 weeks after) so not that often I don't think. Yes, you poor buggar, 2 in each must suck. I had one on each eye, and the charge for me all up was $3200 abouts...about half that was actuall surgery room charge and the other, for the surgeon himself..Don't forget i am in New Zealand..and thats NZ dollars...so cheaper for you guys in the states...well in conversion terms anyway. Oh that was for BOTH eyes. I had them done at once...And unlike others I DO recommend getting them done at the same time. Depending on what your sergeon recommends of course. But I should imagine he would say at once. It not only cuts your surgery time down, it also is shorter recovery in the long run..Gets it over and done with.
It was well worth the money for me Lisa...(thats my sisters name!) :)
I did'nt go through insurance..(I should actually look into that though)
I preferred just paying up front..they do have financing options too I think. Check out Harvard like Katie, and others..they seem very good.
Good luck, and just ask if there is anything else you want to know. You are not ugly or unattractive, Its just a pain in the ass. Just remember you can get something done about them. I felt the same. Especially cause i have always been known for my very blue eyes...and felt like that had gone, but they haven't they are still there, looking nice! and the whites are coming back!
Just try and keep out of the sun in the mean time and try and chug back the fish oils ets, drink lots of water and keep them lubricated with some good drops..(not bollocks ones from the chemist) go to a Optometrist, or surgeon so they can give you the proper care.
All the best Sonia. :)
