Sadie,

I really feel for you now. How disappointing to think you've found the answer only to discover it won't work. I'm praying that you will find the solution for your pain.

Hi all. Not sure where to begin, there have been so many posts. First I want to say to Sadie that I really feel for her. One of my big fears is that I will get the same answer from Dr. Filler when I go in again. There are other thingsthat could be causing my pain so I need to psych myself up for being told there is nothing he can do and I know I would be very disappointed and sad after. So Sadie, hang in there. Did he give you any idea what may be causing the pain if it was not something he could fix. Keep us posted.

Julie, I too have a TENS and it has been my life saver. I wear it all the time. I wear the wires tucked in my pants and wear vests a lot to cover it up. But it is a nuisance to have to hide it all the time. Glad you are loving Ellie--great name. As for pain meds, I cried when I finally agreed to take them and to this day hope I will be able to go off them some day. Hope you will hear from Dr. Batbaro's assistant soon. I came across some things he had published on MR Neurography and piriformis.

Hgirl, yes you are right I have had pain since 1998 or really 1997. After the pain started I pushed and pushed, kept playing tennis, trying to work out, went on a walking tour of Italy and it just kept getting worse and worse. My PT had to insist I slow down. When I realized I couldn't fix it I became very depressed for a couple of years. Tried about 15 antidepressants before they found something that worked.

Debbie, gabopentin made me feel like a zombie so I couldn't take it. It is also a med given mainly for epilepsy. When I started the antidepressant that worked it gave me lots of anxiety so to keep me on it, I took ativan which also helped the muscle relax. It is also difficult to go off of and you must wean off of it slowly.

David thanks for the tip on where ot stay. I had just been loooking up that very hotel and then when you gave it good reviews I went ahead and booked. I was glad you had a day so pain free that you cried and also not surprised that you still had some lows to tackle again. But you just keep hanging in and supporting everyone else. Thanks.

Hgirl even though you are still having lots of pain you sound so much more positive in your attitude--more hopeful and not so down. Good for you. Do I remember that you have 2 litle girls? And I think you said that you have had some pain free time when yu are careful. GREAT!

Menzie, I feel so sad for you and just hope that there is something Dr. Filler can do. I know yu will be glad to have the consult and hopefully you will get some answers. Being a mother myself, my heart goes out to you.

Leesa you sound very much like David at about the same stage, ups and downs when you overdue. But generally you sound positive about the results. I am happy for you. I may send you a private post in the next few days.

Last, I wanted to mention that althugh that doctor at the pain clinic got no real responce from me, my massage can't even touch my right piriformis. I will get terrible leg pain for severalafterwards. I had active release there once and could barly walk it was so bad for about a week. If I think about it that doctor barely touched the muscle.

JBL. It was great to hear from you again. The condition you had can be very dangerous and I thought it is usually considered emergency surgery and usually comes from a problem in the back. You may have also had piriformis as Dr. Filler says that 42% od people with piriformis also have back lesions. You sound like yuo are doing well and always an advcate for Dr. Filler. Thanks for your update.

It is late and I am off to bed after babysitting my 3 granchildren tonight.

I want to thank everyone for the compassion you've shared with me. I am disappointed, but not giving up......I promised my husband great fun last year for his May 5th birthday, it didn't happen then, but I still have time to make it happen for this year!!

I wish each one of you an end to your struggles!

Sadie

Remember, it's "bottoms up" for those injections :moon:

Hi all.

JLB, thanks for the update. It was great to hear from you and you need to know that your improvements, as described in your last two postings, have been a source of motivation to me. The post prior really, really picked me up at a point where I was at my rock bottom since I had the surgery. Since that post, I raised my attitude and my expectations and I have steadily improved. You probably had no idea that your post was that much of an inspriation to someone on here but I can assure you that it was and will remain so for me.

HG, my Skelaxin dosage is 800 mg to be taken 3-4 times daily. HOWEVER, I break these pills in half so I take 400 mg per dose. I take a half pill every 5-6 hours for a grand total of 2 to 2.5 pills daily. Although I am improving, I will continue these to the 3 month mark and then try to start cutting back by a 400 mg every couple of weeks. By taking the Skelaxin in this manner, I can drive, work, concentrate, socialize, etc.. It makes me just the slightest bit sleepy but not to any detrimental effect whatsoever.

My wife and I are going on our very well deserved anniversary cruise next week and soak up some umbrella drinks and warm weather. She has been a dream in her support and care for me and I feel an enormous need to give back to her. This is the first in a lifetime of efforts to try and show my appreciation to her and to give back some of what this affliction has taken from us over the last year.

Hope everyone is as well as possible and I will check back in when we return.

Your friend,

David

Hello, i am so glad i found this thread. I am from Canada and have been suffering from piriformis syndrome for over a year now. I love running and HIIT and elliptical training however it further exacerbated my condition. At this point i have severe sciatica pain from the piriformis down to the knee and i cannot sit on a hard chair, cannot play with my son or train or walk or barely even sleep. Would you know anyone in Canada who does these surgeries? How about a specialist in botox/steroid injections for that area? For anyone who had the surgery, were you able to go back to running/fitness/an active lifestyle? I would do anything to fix this. I did 1 year of physio, acupuncture, osteopathy, laser, massage, i just haven't tried the injections yet but read that they are no long term solution. Thank you so much for your help!

AFTER MY INJECTIONS, MY RELIEF SOUNDS ABOUT THE SAME AS YOUR DAUGHTERS. I JUST THINK DR FILLER IS YOUR BEST CHANCE, HE HAS DONE MORE SURGERIES THAN ANY DR. I HAVE READ ABOUT, AND I KNOW FOR SURE HE IS IN THE RIGHT AREA BECAUSE OF RELIEF I HAVE GOTTEN. I FELT LIKE I HAD NOTHING TO LOSE BY GETTING THE SURGERY ( EXCEPT MONEY ).

FILMFEST

NO, NOT CAUDA EQUINA , DR FILLER SAID PIRIFORMIS, BUT I HAD EVERY SYMTOM OF CAUDA EQUINA( MY 4 DR. AT HOME TOLD ME CAS, BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND WHERE IN MY LUMBAR) IM AM JUST SAYING THAT PIRIFORMIS CAN DO ALL I LISTED.

I DONT PUSH DR FILLER TO ANYBODY, ( I GOT THE SAME BIG FAT BILL THAT EVERYONE GOT) MY OPINION IS THAT HE IS YOUR BEST CHANCE, I HOPE SOME OF THESE OTHER DR. ARE AS GOOD OR BETTER, THE MORE GOOD DOCTORS THE BETTER & CHEAPER FOR EVERYONE.

IM STILL NOT COMPLETELY FIXED, AND MAY NOT EVER BE FIXED, BUT DR FILLER WAS MY BEST CHANCE.

Hi All:

Just wanted to report that today has so far been my best day since October 2006!!! Slept like a rock last night. 18 days since surgery and I have only minor nerve pain down my leg and no toe pain. Incision pain is almost non-existent. I plan on weaning off the hydrocodone starting this coming Tuesday. The nurse told me to continue to take it as I have been for one more month but I want to see if I can get off it earlier. I did my own laundry today and went to the store alone. Still not carrying anything heavy and still taking it easy.

My surgery was short 2 1/2 hours so I wasn't as bad off as David, Donna or others that have posted. I'm recovering quicker because of this I'm sure.

Take care everyone.

Sounds like you're doing great Leesa. Wonderful news!!

Surgery was four months ago today and so I wanted to give a quick progress report. This past month I've increased walking to between 30 and 40 minutes in the mornings and an hour in the evenings. I've also started a stretching routine. Since then, I've experienced a burning pain down the side of my right leg and the piriformis muscle area hurts a bit after a long walk or if I've had to go up hill...the only way to get to work from my house! But I feel that's all to be expected as the muscles have gotten really tight and lazy over the last two years and are just protesting from being awakened. Last week was a pretty full week physically, walking the hill several times a day and I really felt it, even with a bit of nerve pain returning. Just a reminded that when Dr. Filler said it could take up to 6 months, he meant it. The pain was not enough to worry about, and I didn't take any medication for it, just rested, took a hot bath and it was gone. I was glad to be able to do so much more with this group than I have in the past!

To those still in the recovery process, keep on increasing your activity slowly, expect good days with a few bad days, and bit by bit the good days will be more abundant than the bad days. Take it easy and don't try to do too much too soon.

to those still in the deciding and/or waiting stages, hang in there. Keep looking for the right answer for you and then go for it. Try to keep your hope and your courage and you will pull through. I'm praying for each of you. I'm here to answer questions and to hopefully give hope as needed.

Leesa, I'm just thrilled for you. I do really believe you will be 100% , you weren't in pain that long compared to many of us( I know it seemed like forever to you) and the short duration of your surgery means a lot less was wrong to begin with. Personally I would wean off the pain meds as soon as possible. They don't help anything heal and the longer you are on them the harder it is to get out of your system. I stopped them at one month out of surgery, and by not taking them I feel you will listen to your body better and will tend to not overdue things. Just my 2cents.

Donna, Glad to hear you are doing so well. I'm sorry you had some nerve pain, but am glad it went away quickly. On a selfish note it makes me feel better as I am 9 weeks out and yesterday and the day before, no sciatica, today, I wake up with it down to the foot. Not terrible mind numbing like before but there nontheless. Its frustrating, but I have accepted the good day bad day scenario . I attribute that to being part of this wonderful, sharing and compassionate group of people I found here. If I had been "on my own" so to speak, only talking once to Dr. Filler and now a new nurse giving out different opinions than Sheila I would be quite depressed. But to be able to share in the ups and downs of others and hear their recovery gives me so much hope and support. I had this 4 years and a long 7 hour surgery, so I must accept my recovery will take much longer than I anticipated, maybe the six months, I don't know. My butt still is tender on the right where the two insicions are so close together and my superior gluteal nerve pain on the left has come and gone a few times. I find that encouraging actually, as Dr. Filler couldn't possibly have missed something on both sides!! and the left was a straight forward clean up of one nerve and it hurts off and on just like before the surgery, so it must be true that NERVES TAKE TIME TO HEAL. Thanks for letting me share ,I always feel so much better :D Wishing everyone on this forum a happy pain free day. Hawaiigirl

Boy, this post has been busy. My computer was out of commission for about a week so it's really great to finally get back in touch with my new friends.

JLB, Leesa, David
Glad to hear about your progress. It is very encouraging to the rest of us. David, enjoy that cruise. After all the time you've been in pain, you deserve it!

Hawiigirl:
Hang in there and try not to get discouraged. It sounds like you're improving but it'll just take a little longer. At least you can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

As for the Lyrica and gabapentin, I have a different viewpoint. I guess as a nurse, I've just seen these meds routinely used for neuropathic pain and with good results. I don't know about you guys but I have no problem "masking" the pain if it will give me some temporary relief. I know we all just want to be "fixed" but I'll take the gabapentin until something permanent can be done. Gabapentin and Lyrica have to be titrated upward and stopped slowly, as well. It's not that you're "addicted" to them but just that starting slowly decreases the side effects and allows the body time to get used to the drug. You have to taper off of it just like you do prednisone. Both meds affect the serotonin and norepinepherin levels which we now know function as pain transmitters in addition to their role in depression. Addiction is when you crave the drug and want to take it when you don't have any medical need to. People that are addicted will do anything to get the drug; whereas, one that's dependent on it just needs it for symptom control.

So sorry to hear the disappointing news. I can really respect Barbaro for at least being straight with you but that sure doesn't lessen the blow.

I saw a new ortho last week about my knee that's been locking--just another problem to add to the low back/piriformis. We got into an interesting discussion about piriformis syndrome. He thinks it's all a crock and said there's no way piriformis causes all the pain because it's such a small muscle. He basically said Filler was just milking everyone for the money. I told him that 2 PT's and several massage therapists have all made a dx of piriformis but again, he just dismissed it. He said PT's are always saying people have piriformis syndrome. I'm going to go back to him to have him check out the hip anyway. Maybe I can convince him to at least do an MRI (He thinks the MRN is no better than an MRI.) because I'm probably ready for a hip replacement and he said the piriformis is released during the hip replacement anyway. My knee has loose bodies floating in the joint and it's ready for a knee replacement. Since the knee is shot, he doesn't see any sense in doing an arthroscopy to remove the loose bodies when the replacement is a given. He shot some cortisone in the knee and I told him the knee will just have to wait until this butt pain is fixed. Menzie, I think we've all received a multitude of different diagnoses and I can't explain it except to say I see it all the time in the medical field.

Sorry for the long post but it's really great to catch up with everybody, hear the success stories and to share in the support we give one another.

Take care,

Debbie

Hi Debbie, thanks for the encouragement, I had a horrible day yesterday and that light at the end of the tunnel seems so far away. The only reason I have much hope of being better is the success stories of others, I feel like, how could I be the only one Filler operated on thats not any better?? I feel the flexeril I was prescribed doesn't do anything and since I can't get the lyrica filled by an out of state doc, I'm not sure if its worth going to a doctor here for it. Someone else on the forum said don't take it, I'm just in pain and confused what to do?

I had a concern for you when you talked about the hip replacement. If you remember Dr. Huggables, the ER doc that hasn't posted in awhile. Well I have spoken to him by phone and he told me his hip replacement surgery was what brought on his sciatica to begin with. After suffering for awhile he then had an ortho doc do the piriformis resection which did nothing to relieve the sciatica, even when this doc said his sciatic nerve was clearly compressed by the piriformis and was relieved with the surgery, yet still sciatica? He has since seen Filler and still no sciatic relief. My point is, if a hip replacement takes care of piriformis why did Huggs do it afterwards, and if the piriformis causes sciatica why was it not relieved then? Its very confusing. Could your hip pain be caused by the butt pain and all the muscles being tight? Do you have sciatic pain? May I ask how old you are to need a knee and hip replacement? Well, I've yacked enough, sorry if I bored you all, Hawaiigirl

Hawaiigirl,

So sorry to hear that you had a hard day yesterday. I know its hard wanting to be all better, and yet you still experience pain. You have to keep believing that good days will happen again, and take extra good care of yourself on the hard painful days so that good days can come sooner.

I took lyrica for a while at the beginning of my piriformis experience but it didn't do any thing for me. In fact, I never really found any medication that I could take that helped the pain, so I can't even make recommendations on the med area. Everything I took made me feel so much worse mentally and emotionally and didn't help physically that I didn't think it was worthwhile to take it.

Keep you chin up and keep hoping.
Hugs

My sister, who has lots of back pain and has had surgery takes lyrica and claims it helps. Gabapenton made me so groggy on just 100 mg. that I couldn't function and couldn't even drive the days after I took it so I have never tried again and I have not tried lyrica.

My ex-husband was telling me about a woman who had lots of butt pain and who had surgery for her hip and it completely got rid of the butt pain so I guess you just never know. I have had my hip X-rayed and it is fine so I assume that is not the problem. Debbie I assume you have arthritis in your hip.

My prirformis and the gluteal muscle on the side where I have the pain is atrophied and Dr. Fillersays that 15% of people with piriformis syndrome have atrophied piriformis muscles. Does anyone else have atrophy in the piriformis?

Does anyone know of anyone who has been turned down by Dr. Filler? Just wondering ever since Sadie got turned down by Dr. Barbaro.

Donna, sorry that you got nerve pain after your long walks but I was amazed that you could walk as much as 30 minutes in the morning and an hour at night. I walked 30 minutes yesterday and had so much painin the butt, down the leg and into the foot that it was very difficult to be on my feet after that.I wore a new pair of boots and wondered if it was that much worse because of that. I always get pain after walking but just not usually as bad as it was last night. Also the sidewalks were icey as the snow is starting to melt which didn't help. I miss walking so much!!!

It is still pretty bad today and I am supposed to take a friend of mine out to dinner tonight for her b'day and I rarely say no to people once I have committed, just pay the price.

Leesa your great day was so encouraging and I am so happy for you. I guess your mother has left by now and you are on your own. How has that been?

Better not sit here too long as I will be sitting tonight.
