I had my first hammer toe survery in 1987 (right foot, 2 toes). Recovery was a breeze & I only took one pain pill a day (did not need them every 6 hours) for 5 days. I had 2 weeks off work & made sure to follow ALL instructions to stay off foot and wear protective footwear. Upon returning to work, I continued to wear protective footwear, kept the foot elevated while at my desk, & took short walks hourly to make sure I had good blood circulation. I did use crutches for 2 weeks at work as a safety precaution. At the 6 week date, my pins were removed and I returned to flat shoes (no heels!) while making sure to watch where I was walking and to keep the foot elevated during my lunch period. (Surgery at Tripler Army Hospital, Hawai'i)

My second surgery (left foot in 1991) was much the same but only a single toe this time. Recovery was as easy and I again only took a single pain pill in the evenings as I found sleeping in protective boot irritating (not painful). This surgery was at Walter Reed AMC, DC.

I had my third surgery on 3 Oct at the VA hospital in Montgomery, AL on three toes on the left foot. Easiest yet, still very little pain and limited use of pain pills except a single one at night for 5 days. Stitches out on 21 Oct (normal time frame) and I will have x-rays on 6 Nov and the pins probably removed at that time. This is the same time frame as both previous operations. My protective boot is huge but overall much lighter than the wooden protective shoes in 1987 & 1991. I was on crutches until the stitches were out (21 Oct) and was simply cautioned to be careful with movement. I get to/from my college classes with no problem and simply sit with foot on an adjacent chair so I don't get any swelling during classes.

Keep the foot dry, keep it elevated to reduce swelling, & use the protective boot at all times.

Get some Dansko clogs or sandals with a back strap. Excellent foot support.

I would like to know what procedure you had to correct the hammer toes? Did you have a bone procedure with fusion of the PIP joint or was it a tendon transfer of the flexor underneath the toe to the extensor on top of the toe(Girdlestone Taylor procedure) . The reason I ask is that my son has been recommended the Girdlestone Taylor surgery for his flexible clawed toes but I would like more information on success and possible complications or reoccurrence of the deformity?

I had HT surgery on my left foot in September 2013. Prior to that I had to have my toes wrapped to avoid the pain while walking on my job. The 2nd toe was shortened by 1/4 inch. I used Tracie Pesuit in Knoxville, a lady doctor.

I experienced absolutely no pain at any time after the surgery. You may not know this, but you will be exchanging fixed hammertoes for fixed straight toes which you will not be able to bend!

It took almost a year for me to get the feeling back in my foot due to the nerve damage.

I am pleased with the results.

My doctor just told me that I should have hammertoe surgery on both my second toes but start with the right because it is worse.  My son and I have planned a week in Italy at the end of March and I'd like your opinion as to whether I should have the surgery now or wait until after our vacation.  If I could know that my foot would feel fine by then, that would be great but a lot of you seem to have pain way after 3 months.  So what would you decide, if you were me

I had hammer toe surgery 11-13-14 on four toes. Wish I could give you some good news! The pins hurt real bad and I had them in for 6 weeks. Removed on 12-23-14 but have major issue with the worst one. I play golf and it is going to be weeks before I can play again. This particular toe did not work and is still hanging down. Hopefully u will have better luck. Take the pain medicine and forget about any shoes for quite a while. John

I am a 69 year old female. I had hammertoe surgery on my right foot a little over 2 weeks ago, involving pins in the second and third toes, soft tissue repair to the fourth toe, and removal of a tailor's bunion next to the little toe. For me, recovery is inconvenient, because of the walking boot and inability to drive, but I have had little pain. Certainly nothing an Advil can't handle. No doubt the amount of pain a person suffers varies greatly from patient to patient, however. I anticipate having to wear the boot 6-8 weeks, but even so, it's a good time to catch up on my reading and all the worthless shows on TV.

I had bunion surgery and 2 hammer toes 12 Dec 2014. My 2 toes look like sausages as described by one other and the bunion area has fleeting strange pains. Both areas are still red and have different degrees of swelling.  The postop pain has been negligible and I can't complain about that.

What I am concerned about is the allergic reaction I had to the tape used. I also believe I was allergic to the sutures as I have had a reaction before. I spoke to the podiatrist about this and he assured me that I did not have a reaction to the sutures. I still believe I did and do as when I take a Benadryl the swelling and the heat disappear. I did not have any metal wires or other things. One toe is beginning to drift towards the other and I am concerned about that.  The big toe is turned up slightly and I read that this is caused by surgery.

I am scheduled to have the right foot done 20 Feb and I am concerned.

I am 8 wks into recovery after hammertoe surgery....that 2nd toe is still very very swollen every day, painful and even after being off of it for 8 hrs sleeping it is still swollen and very red. I massage every day to break up scar tissue but have not had any relief. I also wear a toe alignment splint at night and still no help in fact it seems to cut into the swollen part. Good luck

I had a bunion and toes 2,3,& 4 done approx. 9 weeks ago. Surgery included cutting the tendons. The great toe is doing ok. I am very concerned about the 3 hammer toes. The toes do not touch the floor!!! It's very creepy! They feel like others have mentioned to be sort of numb and resemble little sausages! Is there anyone who had this surgery, had the same post op results that regained a normal foot??
