I don't know what kinds there are, but I had 3 hammer toes repaired 4 wks ago and done with double bunion surgery. My 2nd toe "hammer" deformity was in the first joint, and the 3rd toe "hammer" was in 2nd joint. Little toe was claw deformity (went under). It takes 12 weeks for cut bones to heal. I am doing great.

My surgery was 4 weeks ago-- double bunion, 3 hammer toe deformities and nerve damage. My doctor said heels do not cause bunions and that I can definitely wear them again. If that were true, why do men get them? It is the bone structure of the particular person. Barefoot and flip flops are very bad for maintaining a good bone structure.

I just used the shower boot the doctor gave me before surgery.... Just slips on and off. no taping, tying or any of that. it has anti-slip strips on the sole so you don't slide.

My feeling is you research, check up on references, have a consult and choose a doctor to perform a personal service. If you are not happy, are in pain or can't function, you are not satisfied with the service you received. I'd go back to the doctor and ask just what will help you. Hydrotherapy? Physical therapy? More icing? Particular shoe? Orthonics? Therapeutic massage?
My doctor charged $53,000 for my foot surgery. You better believe I'll want function in a reasonable amount of time. If you had a $59,000 remodel done in your house and the light switches don't work, wouldn't you call the contractor?
My doctor straight up told me that after hammer toe repairs, you don't always get flexibility of the toe back. It common for some people to have a little stiffness. I thought that would be an acceptable trade-off for the pain of the toes rubbing against the top of the shoe causing pain and blisters all the time.

Depends on the foot. my surgery was on left foot. I could drive as soon as I was off all pain meds. if you're on pain med, auto insurance won't cover you if you have an accident. 2 wks might be good guess.

How did your surgery go and how are you now? I had mine (sounds exactly like your repairs) 4 wks ago and doing great.

This is 9 months after your post, but I just had same burning, shooting pains. Dr said nerve regeneration causes painful hot bursts of pain. Luckily, doesn't last long.

Mine still hangs down also. Been a couple years now. Good luck. Nearly makes you crazy, doesn't it?

Not so hot there either....bunion tried to return so surgeon inserted a metal part to straighten toe. Nerves in foot all messed up now!!!

I had hammertoe surgery on January 8, 2016 and as I write this on March 3, am almost completely over it. As most have written, staying off it the first week and doing constant icing and elevation is really the key. I returned to work after a week, used crutches for one week and then wore the boot for two additional weeks. After that, an athletic shoe until I was back in leather dress shoes. I went to physical therapy twice a week for 12 visits and was also very faithful in doing exercises at home. Yes, the therapy was painful, but I've regained all the flexibility I had lost. I resumed workouts three weeks after surgery. I am 62 so if I can do this, you can too.

6 weeks ago bunion and hammertoe surgery. (Left foot1 year ago). Healing is slow. My foot didn't feel totally healed until right at the one year mark. The first surgery ... Pins stayed in 6 weeks. The hammertoe pin slid down under the skin making office removal impossible. Surgical removal was required. Swelling lasted for weeks after the pin removal.
My dr kept me out of work for 5 weeks and initially off my feet except whenABSOLUTELY necessary. I think staying off helped in the outcome.
Foot number 2 - same surgery but a little, ore painful I learned from my previous surgery my boundaries. I returned to work at 3 weeks - desk job.
I have had a considerable amount more swelling because I haven't propped it up as much.
Crutches were hard for me and 2nd surgery I skipped most of that. I was more confident. The hammertoe pin was painless. The bunion pin will be removed later after swelling decreases. My foot is really sore as was the first surgery. No shoe will fit thus foot so I will wear the boot until swelling goes down. I can't imagine heels and feel that surgery would be useless if heroes arethe goal. Recovery islobgand slow bc healing us slow. Your foot will be stiff and wiggling toes is vital.
This second surgery ...my foot hurt at night and I did use more pain med.
In both cases....post op days --1-3 the worst. After that it all gets better.
Take care of your surgical investment Avoid heels! Listen to your dr. Even if returning to work is necessary, accommodate yourself and remember you are still recovering. I have along ways to give fire foot # 2 is healed. I am not@ 100% andplanany Nd all walking of any distance. I am female...59 healthy and active

Hello, I require some much needed advise. What type of shoe should be worn after hammertoe surgery? What is the best shoe or shoe type to wear? When I say type i mean, square toe, round toe, ballet flats, short soft boot, loafers, wedge heel (less than 2'), etc. I ask because I recently had hammertoe surgery about 1wk an 4 days. My doctor removed the stitches today and advised that the healing is going well however, he wast't really clear on the exact type of shoe I should wear once I am to begin wearing shoes again. He did say to remain in the post surgery shoe for the next 4 days and then I can begin to wear comfortable roomy shoes and slowly progress to my normal shoes but that. that would take sometime and that I should not wear sneakers just yet because he doesn't want anything to rub up against the toe. So what shoes can I wear? I am a heavy walker so ballet flats as well as just really flat shoes tend to give back pain. Sneakers give me back as well if I wear them for too long a period. Also, others, my family to has a propensity for bunions and hammertoes. I DO NOT want to hinder my recovery in any way. Can someone help?
