Did your swelling ever subside? I had this same type of surgery 9 weeks ago and have had a terrible time with the hard swelling at the base of the toes. It has limited my range of motion and I have a huge amount of pain and hyper-sensitivity in my toes.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.

I am going to Orthopedic in November for possible Hammertoe surgery. I tried 117 pairs of shoes from Zappos, nothing works. I saw 4 Podiatrists and 2 say surgery and 2 say no, it will not help possibly. I am now going to Hospital For Special Surgery to see a Dr. Scott Ellis, specializes in foot deformities Do you think an orthopedic is better or podiatrist for pinky hammertoe surgery?
I need to have surgery I think, since every clsed shoe I wear hurts me so much!

I am 10 months out and my toe is really swollen n sore still. I don't know what to do

I would call your doctor, especially if you only had one toe done. That seems like a long time to be sore still. I was told the swelling can last up to a year or longer, in some cases, never resolving. I had two toes done 6 months ago, one is no longer swollen, but the other remains about half the size it was at its most swollen. I was told to give it at least a year before all swelling goes down.

I am going for Pinky Hammertoe surgery next month at Hospital For Special Surgery, Dr. Scott Ellis Foot Orthopedic . I will be in a twilight sleep which I like since I am getting an ankle/nerve block. I have to be out of work a work, I hope this surgery is not too painful, what is your opinion. After 117 pairs of shoes in 5 months, I have to do this, I want to be like other people who can wear shoes or boots. I never wore high heels no more then 3 inches. I now wear for the past 10 years heels no more then 2 inches.
PS I already went to 4 Podiatrists, two say surgery and 2 say it may not help.

I am an athlete. My surgeon was adamant about rest and not walking. I didn't take this serious. I hobbled around the house, up and down stairs. Also, I walked around stores. When I walked, I walked on my heel of my foot. My surgery involved inserting a pin. Bunion surgery was nothing compared to hammertoe surgery. It was and still is painful. A month after surgery, the pin was removed. When the doctor pulled it out it was bent like the letter L. He wasn't happy. The pin could have broken in half. So, if you have the surgery using a pin, don't walk at all. My fear now is when can I go back to work. I teach swimming and also work at an NFL stadium. I work in concessions. I am sprinting for 6 hours. I want to go back without a doctor's note. A friend said, it would cause major problems with my health insurance and was illegal. How long have other hammertoe victims stayed out of work? Thank you.

Dec. 17 2015. Hammertoe surg on 2nd & 3rd toes left foot..Painful prior to surgery.Had sutures removed today. Ouch for certain. Toes look flat & longer now. Have to wear "Spaceboot" when walking around. 2 more days for first shower. Ankle block before surgery painful. Pain tolerated ok..pain med helps. Rest, foot elevated. Didnt use ice. Next visit in a month. Had Physical Therapy. Keep moving as able. Take Colace !

I had hammertoe surgery 9 months ago and my pinky toe is still swollen. I can not wear shoes or sneakers. If I knew this before I would of never had the surgery. My Dr. does not have any answers. I am 57 and very healthy.

You say that you are a track athlete. I also run a lot and was wondering if you have been able to return to running without pain? How long did it take before you ran again? What kind of hammertoe surgery did you have? Thanks for any help you can give me. I am terrified to get this done but want to resume running as I can't run now without pain due to the toe.

I just had my hammertoe operation six weeks ago. The stitches came out 10 days after surgery and the pin came out 6 weeks after surgery. The pin removal is painless. My foot did swell up and now my foot is peeling like crazy. I have applied Vit. E cream to help the situaton. My foot is still swollen. I can only wear sandals-no boots! The toe is sensitive. You will not be wearing high heel shoes which are a root cause of hammertoes. I suggest that you invest in orthotics to prevent the situation from repeating itself. I bought some and love them.

If you decide on a Podiatrist, you need one who is also an orthopedic surgeon. I searched 4 years before I found the right doctor. 4 weeks ago I had surgery to correct severe bunion (Repair was with 4 screws and a big bone staple) and 2 hammer toes repairs, nerve damage repair between 2nd and 3rd toe which involved cutting the bone, bunionette by little toe and also the little toe straightened. Basically he rebuilt my deformed foot.
I am 63 and did great. He used no cast, I took pain med first 3-1/2 days and not since, no infection, no problems. No stitches to be removed-- they dissolve away. On 5th day I received a ck up and a walking boot. 4 wk check-up was great. On the 7th week pins will come out-- they don't hurt at all and they freely spin inside, so they won't hurt coming out. I use medical tape to the the tops of the wires so they don't get caught on blankets or sock. At this time no bandage, only two tiny scabs showing at he bug bunion ares and one where the nerve work was done... The rest is healed.
I put the surgery off way too long, but knew so many people who had BOTCHED bunion surgery, I just wanted to have the best surgeon. I kept searching for painless bunion surgery. I almost went to the Amoy Bunion center in CA but they said with flying back to east coast and my age Id have to stay there 2 weeks. Nope. The doctor I found came up with some change in the procedure that is less painful and he has an excellent reputation. I have nothing but praise for him and his office.

Good luck.... Hope it goes well. At least you don't have a bunion. I have 3 hammer toes wired/pinned as I write this. It was really easy surgery. I also had 2 bunions on one foot and nerve damage surgery done at same time.
