Hi TC2006, if you get this can you tell me how your recovery went?
I just had a stent put in after an unsuccessful stone laser(the breaking up of the stone thru the uterer). My stone is 10mm and right now I have back pain and am still passing blood in my urine and my side hurts.
I feel so weak and tired. I have to go back again to have this done all over again because my Dr. used the wrong size laser and could not reach the stone the first time.
Please tell me what to expect.
thank you

Dear TC2006
Have you started feeling better yet? I just had a stone removed after 3 weeks of suffering, and I'm still in alot of pain, my dr said he got it all, I'm just wondering if I will ever be back to normal.

I woke up one morning, losing probably more blood than water, went to the ER, and the CT showed a tiny (2mm) stone at the uvj (lower ureter). Stones impacted at this location generally (if they don't pass within 72 hours) do not pass on their own and can cause permanent renal damage. This particular stone was calcium oxalate (which is NOT indicative of excessive calcium, but excessive oxalate, found in foods such as chocolate, beets, tea, pepper. Calcium is generally expelled from the body in other ways unless oxalate is present. You can help prevent these stones by - limiting oxalate intake, increasing water intake, increasing citric acid intake).
Pre-op the physician's assistant prescribed me oxycodone for pain, although in hindsight I believe he had never had a stone and assumed I was a seeker and exaggerating the pain, and did not wish to deal with my complaints. I was also prescribed flomax, which prevents muscles in the urinary tract (and for males prevents ejaculation) from contracting and generally treated renal colic more effectively than dissociative pain medication, as the flomax loosened the uvj. muscles, allowing urine to flow past the stone. Ask for Flomax, male or female, it treats this type of pain better than does opiates.
A month later, I had endoscopic basket retrieval and have had problems ever since - if you are going to get this procedure done, DO IT IMMEDIATELY. Do not allow your doctor to make you wait for treatment, as this will cause complications and needlessly put you through more pain and suffering than is necessary. Due to allowing this tiny stone to sit in the uvj for nearly a month, my left kidney is now at 83% capacity as compared to tests performed before I had this stone.

I had two taken out by laser on Monday, the general pain from the surgery isn't bad, well I lied it sucks the first day when you have it done, but your body will be less irritaded after a nights rest and a lot of the pain and irritations goes away, but then comes the fun part, urinating blood and my favorite...blood clots, almost as bad as the stones themselves, much easier to pass they pass quick but not pain free. All in all I would say it was worth it, if they won't pass on thier own you have two options, surgery or kidney failure...you choose.
I just had a kidney stone removed on April 20th (my 21st b-day). They had to put a stint in so that my kidneys would open up so that I could go to the bath room. I have been throwing up, having the same back and stomach pain since they put me in the hospital. Any thoughts?
I had a 2 cm Calcium Oxalate stone removed in February I was in the hospital for aprox.24 hours after surgery (lithotripsy) they went in through a tube in my back into the kidney .It is may and I am still having a lot of pain at times in my side and back in the kidney area and also in the area where
the stint was removed .If you have had this surgery done before can you tell
me how long it takes to return to normal? It feels like I have something still in there but the Xray shows nothing. And I have returned to the Urologist twice already the last visit was May 8,2009 and the doctor said it was just the nerves rehealing I get nausea, intense pain ,and short term infections but he said the infections would cause fever but my urine smells like it did when I had kidney infections but it doesn't last long only a day or so but it reoccurs

Had the laser surgery in Feb. 2009 and I am still getting am still having a lot of pain in my side at times it seems to be more intense after a harder day of lifting or strenuous activity but mostly if I lie on my side more if I lie on the side of the operation but it still hurts if I lie on the opposite side .I still have a lot of days that my urine is strong smelling like and infection but I have been through 4 runs of antibiotics and my urine is showing clear also my urinary tract still feels like it did when they first pulled out the stint tube or what ever it was how long should I expect this to go on .I am trying to be patient .I don't don't if this is normal or not it is my first surgery any insite on what's going on would be well appreciated thank you thomka
Ok... so i had a 5 mm stone in Oct of 2008, that the ER doc said i should pass in a few days at home, gave me FloMax and Oxycodone w/ Apap and Ibproufin and sent me on my way. Here we are, October of 2009, and the stone never passed, and they did something that started with an H, but it was a urtosopic laser procedure, the doc said a 30 to 45 min. surgery. Told my mother who was in the same day surgery room with me, Oh he will be back here with in an hour and a half at the most, well after 3 and a half hours she freaked out and started asking where i was, only to find out, i was still in the OR.... After i was fully awake back in SDS, the doc came in and said it was a first in his career to see a stone as " impacted " as mine, and that it took him a few tries to get to it, and break it up took forever. NOW here i am almost a week later, peed blood for like a day and a half and that stopped, and i felt grate! didnt even need the pain pills he put me on, but now i can barley walk and feel like i did before the surgery.. I can barley pee when i do, and that hurts to the point it brings tears to my eyes.. I go to him on Thursday to have a double J stent removed, but i dont know if i can make it that long.. Any ideas what this could be??? I am 24, have never had a stone before anywhere, or any surgeries.. This is a first and i HATE it..
My wife had surgery on Feb 2, 2010. She had a staghorn kidney stone that required two surgerys over 5 days. The successfully removed 80% of the stone which was said to be at least 3" and the other 20% on friday. It has now been 8 days her second surgery and she is still in great pain continues to bleed. I think they did they used the sound waves to break up the stones and then removed them with a tube. The tube was removed 4 days again and she still is bleeding. She has had 10 units of blood so far. She is in bad pain and very depressed. I am looking for the light at the end of the tunnel here, can anyone share there samilar story with me or offer any advice. Thanks!
just literally got outta surgery this morning...ureteroscopic stone removal of 3 stones all around 4mm. I woke up and was informed that i had a stent. I said oh thank god you got those things out, and the nurse looked at me and said' no honey theyre still in there". WOW. Im sitting at home with awful right flank pain, bladder spasms, awful pain urinating, bloody urine, a stent and 3 stones still hanging out. They said they want to see me next week if I dont pass them in that time. Im scared about this whole thing. I just want these gone and it seems neverending..Not to mention Im in the worst pain Ive been in my life. Any suggestions? Im a newcomer to this ordeal...Also 19 years old..Id think I would be in good health at this age.
Does anyone know what kind of medication/tablets are taken after kidney stone removal..? My mother had them removed abroad but overthere these post-op tablets are very expensive. Just wondered if I could get them here without prescription..?
Many Thanks to you all.

This is proving to be more of cautionary tales of kidney stone surgery than real time help for those with questions. Of course I think you are more likely to be cruising these forums and posting if you have complications. I consider my urethrescopic removal surgery to have been a cake walk by comparison. But the one area of pain in which I excelled after the surgery was burning urination. A bit raw couldn't do justice to this pain. My first several times after the surgery hurt far worse than the kidney stones ever did.
I don't know if this is a problem for enough patients to justify more IV pain meds, or local anesthesia or what they could do, but after I urinated once I was phobic of going again. This was absolutely the worst part of the experience for me, and I notice that others have not complained as much of this symptom, so I think experiences are somewhat individualized. I asked the urologist about this at a follow up visit, and he said the best you can do for this burning is dilute the urine by drinking more. I don't know if it is salt, ammonia or acid or all of the above that causes the burning but I'd like to think they might be able to leave a capsule behind in the bladder with something to neutralize the urine for a little while to allow recovery from the irritation of the surgery, or maybe add something to the IV that would do it systemically.
I did experience a little discomfort from the stent, mostly as others have said after periods of activity. They like to leave the stent in as long as you can tolerate it, mine was in for almost 4 weeks. The irritation got worse as time went by and whereas the bleeding had stopped after a couple days, it started up again 3 weeks out. The urologist told me this bleeding was irritation from the stent.
Had the stent removed in his office. They used a little local anesthesia in end of the urethrea. I don't think it was very effective. This was uncomfortable but my relief from the stent irritation was immediate. Any lingering doubts I had about recovery to my pre-kidneystone state were gone at that point, so despite my whining about the urination pain, my overall result was positive.
FWIW, it was a calcium oxalate stone, my first at 52 so my sympathies to people who are fighting this in their late teens and twenties. I'm not sure what size, but it wasn't so big but what they didn't send me home after cat scan to try to pass it for a month before the surgery. I drank and drank. The pain went away after 3 days but I never captured any stone in my urine. Thoiught it might have passed and I missed it. Was pain free for almost a month and then the pain returned with a vengeance and I had significant obstruction and was pretty uncomfortable. The scans had only shown the one stone and the doc suggested it was time to take it out surgically.
When I came to the hospital I got dihlatin(sp?) IV as a pain reliever. that stuff worked, the flank pain just disappeared. Then the surgery was delayed because the operating room with the lathroscopic equipment was taken up for several emergencies. So I spent the night at the hospital. At that point they gave me morphine - which was much less effective for the pain. I don't know why the indications were not to repeat the more effective pain reliever.
