I had Ureteroscopic Stone Removal Done last Thursday and they placed a stent into the left kidney to drain urine out. Right now they have me on acetaminophen - codeine - caffeine( Tylenol #3) and Cephalosporins. Since I had the procedure done on Thursday the pain has gotten progressively worse every time I urinate on the pain scale (1-10) it easily hits a 7-8. It also feels like my left kidney is contracting at a fast rate and i can feel my stent like it is falling out. but it hasnt. I am all out of Ideas what to do?

I had the surgery done just very recently and the pain now is 10 times what is was before hand.  The doctors all pressured me into getting this procedure done and now seems like they don't want anything to do with it.  I can't sleep through the night, the pain with using the bathroom is just insane and even when I get up and walk it is very uncomfortable.  The now tell me that " we usually don't give pain meds after the surgery" and this is being said to me 2 minutes after I flushed down a toilet full of blood.  I can already see that this is gonna become a huge problem HELP........

The pain from the surgery was managed with morphine. My incision bled for 3 days after but eventually stopped. Once the catheter and tube were removed, I was alot more comfortable. I had a bladder infection before and after the surgery, so that prolonged my recovery. Its been almost 3 weeks and I am feeling like myself again. I've lost alot of "water weight" and I didn't realize how swollen my legs, ankles, and shoulders were until after the surgery. I am glad that I'll be monitored by my Dr. for the next 2 years so if the stones come back, they won't get large enough to require surgery again. So drink alot of water and a speedy recovery to anyone going through the surgery. It sounds alot scarier than it is.

We just found out my husbands kidney stones were due to an issue in his thyroid. If was determined thru blood work, maybe this would help your daughter.

Hello, I am replying on behalf of my dad, who had kidney stone removal by surgery 2 years ago. He is still in alot of pain! He says he wished he hadnt had it done. He is on numerous of pain killers, and he doesnt get any answers from his consultant and his local doctor. This had affected his life badly, and we are still awaiting answers and the right medication. My dad is 60 years of age, and should be fit, but he doesnt move from his house, stopped driving as he is in very much in pain!!

The type of kidney stone removed, determines the treatment afterward. I've had kidney stones caused by urinary tract infections and required no diet changes but I did take some good advice from a friend who has acid stones. She gave me one helpful hint; don't eat foods that cause your body to be highly acidic. Foods like red meats, bacon, rice, spaghetti, beer, soft drinks (yea all the good stuff) should be eaten in moderation. I remember having a coke about a month after my surgery and it burned when I urinated - that was definitely a lesson learned. So until your father gets his results, I'd try a few diet changes to see if that minimizes the pain and discomfort.

Hello to all.

I just had a 4 mm stone busted out with a laser less than 24 hrs ago. The doc who is great had to put a stint in on my right side. I can tell that the stone is gone; I feel great in that aspect. However when I do pee through the stint; I am in tremendous amount of pain. I put a call into the doc to see if this is normal? I am sure that I can make the full recovery off the pain meds if thie stint issue was not present. I will keep you all posted.

I am a 38 yo female with a history of kidney stones. Never one this big. It was 5mm x 3mm but oddly shaped. I had kidney stone surgery on 4/24/2012 via ureteroscopy. There were no incisions & I did not have a stint placed in the ureter because I have a completely duplicated ureter & the Dr felt it was unneccessary. The pain I experienced AFTER the surgery was absolutely the worst pain I have ever experienced, worst than childbirth. The unmanageable pain sent me back to the ER for IV Zofran and IV Morphine & IV fluids due to dehydration. The pain was honestly that bad. The pain is what caused the severe vomitting. It took me almost a week to finish passing the stones. Dr broke it into 3 pieces, because it was too big to pull out with a basket. The pain was as bad as the initial severe kidney stone attack when I first realized that I had it, only it lingered for 5 days. I could not get out of the bed for 5 days. I layed on a heating pad & took hydrocodone around the clock, with Zofran. Finally they all passed, but I have had residual swelling of the kidney, ureter & urethra. Apparently post-op swelling is normal. They will continue to do renal ultrasounds until they confirm that the swelling is gone and no other obstructions exist. Until then, I still have the lingering pain from the swelling. It is manageable with advil.

Be absolutely sure that you know what you are in for. I honestly thought I would feel better that night. I was sorely mistaken. The Dr really did not give me any indication that I would be anything other than "just fine" after I recovered from anesthesia.

Good luck!

Everyone is different and some are more sensitive to the stents. If you are sensitive them, be sure to tell your urologist so they can note your chart and use a different, smaller stent next time.

The first time ih ad this done it was horrific. The urination afterwards was so bad i would scream while biting on a towel. This lasted about a week. HORRIFIC PAIN. I dont even know why it is legal for them to do this procedure. Seriously.

This time wasnt AS bad but i had Azo on hand and took it on the way home from the hospital. That helped to sort of numb my urinary tract.

Your urinary tract is so irritated because tools and stents...cameras, etc have been shoved up in there, so when your urine hits it...it feels like acid on an open wound. The AZO helps. GET SOME before you have this procedure done.

They have me on dillaudid for the pain and it works alright...I co uld use something stronger, but im not sure they will honor that request. I am lucky to have a wonderful urologist that helps me when I am in pain. Where, a lo t of urologists treat you like addicts and wont give you anything. Its rather unfortunate.

I had my stent removed on Monday. Today is Friday and my pain is gettig worse an the bleeding is bad. There are a lot of clots as well. I was told by a friend of mine that the fragments are still trying to pass and its probably just that they are irritated the tract and cutting along the way out.

I am sorry for anyone that has to go thru this and I hope that you guys  have a speedy recovery. It is not a fun process and i wish that they would think of another way to remove these damn things but until then, just drink a LOT of water. Also add some lemonade to your diets. That is supposed to help. Avoid dark leafy veggies, nuts, dark sodas, coffee, etc. A small amt of alcohol or wine is actually good for stones as well.

Hugs to you all! This is no fun....
