Hey all of you
Im 23 and i had surgery to "fix" my scoliosis when i was about to turn 16 in Portugal. I came 2 the UK in 2004 and have lived here ever since but for the last couple of years my pain has been the worst it has ever been and I mean not being able 2 sleep at all, flat or with pillows. Im typing this on my laptop and it's 4:39 AM and i can't sleep but get me, im sleepy i just have pain... i have changed my bed and mattress as i thought my last 1 was causing the pain but since i got the memory foam mattress the pain hasn't shifted :-( i dunno what else to do. I have spoken to my surgeon back home (Portugal) on the phone and he advised i got an x-ray to rule out things that might be wrong since i've noticed that my right shoulder blade is now "poking" it's way through and it didn't used 2 do that... I also noticed that for the last 6 months i can't get up after a flat position, the pain is unberable and i also had to quit swimming which i love because i nearly drowned a few weeks back clutching to my pain, it was like a spasm.... I've been to my GP here and sadly when looking at x-rays done here in the UK he says "You have to get used to it, you'll always live with that pain" im 23... i just can't accept living with this discomfort 4 the rest of my life.... If any of you knows what could possibly help me, i'd thank you so much xxxxxxx

I had scoliosis surgery about 7 years ago. I was 13 years old. I got well fast, but this past year has been terrible. The doctor says to exercise and take muscle relaxers but everytime i attempt to exercise within a couple days i am in terrible pain. I take muscle relaxers but i do not want to depend on them. I also get terrible headaches if i do not sleep correctly or if i stand on my feet too long. My back hurts so bad constantly and i just dont know what to do!!! Someone please help :-)

I had this corrective surgery too, about 7 years ago when i was 12 and i have two rods. The surgery went brilliant and i was out of hospital within a week. I use to get a little it of discomfort for the first little while afterwards, but the doctor said it was okay. But now, 7 years later, i get pain all over my back, especially my lower back, and it seems to be getting worse and more frequent. I'm not sure of what to do to help the pain. I'm thinking of arranging an appointent with my doctor in the next month or so if i can't find anything that will help.
any ideas welcome :-)

Hello all...
I had a massive spinal fusion to correct my scoliosis about 7 years ago when I was 14, and just like the person above, it was fine for a few years but pain showed up in my lower back about two years ago and has gotten progressively worse. I have found that staying as active as possible helps a little bit, but the best thing that I have found is physical therapy. I go to Washington Outpatient Rehab based in Spokane, WA where they work very hard with core muscle exercises. Their philosophy is that when your muscles get weak from the rods doing all of the work, it causes the supporting bones such as the pelvis to get out of whack and pull on other muscles, which is what hurts so bad. Therefore, they emphasize utilizing core muscles such as the lower abdominals, pelvic floor muscles, and gluteus minimus. This, in theory, will help to hold up the bones and get the stress off of the back muscles and the fusion. I've been going for a couple of weeks and following the therapy regimen, and my pain has decreased by about 50% so far. I think that this is a good theory (it's the best I've heard, anyway...) and you should ask your healthcare provider about it. It's the only thing that's helped me...

I had this surgery 3 years ago, i'm having realllllly bad lower back pain, I'm seeing a chiropractor tomorrow because my father thinks it's a pinched nerve, some of you might want to take that into concideration depending on what kind of pain you all are experiencing

I had back surgery when i was in middle school, i think it was around the 6th or 7th grade. I am in constant pain all the time, i went to the doctor and they did x-rays but they found that nothing was wrong. I went to the chiropractor and it helped when i went but then the pain would come back. I use Tylenol pm to sleep but it doesn't help with the pain and i use regular Tylenol during the day sometimes but not all the time. I just wish this pain would go, I am 16 now and going to school in the winter is a hassle cuz i get really sharp pinches during the cold days and rainy days. In the summer it just burns really bad, i go to school and my teachers are always saying i have back pain too but they couldn't possibly know what i am going through unless they have what i have in my back. Regular back pain isn't the same as scoliosis surgery, but my teachers don't understand that at all. I am absent most of the semester because of back pain and it's annoying because the teachers love to pick on me and say that i am way behind in school. I did homeschooling but they only gave it to me for about 3 months and then a month longer because the weather was still bad. All i know is that i want the pain to go away and it's not happening, and I've been dealing with this for quite some time. Doctors tell me the same thing over and over when i go to them, they keep saying that sometimes your body rejects it and that if your spine isn't curving anymore to take out the rods and plates but i am quite scared to go back into surgery to get this removed. Anyways i know how everyone feels, but i just wish other people who don't have this surgery could understand. :'(

 I have had two spinal fusions. 1st - summer of 6th grade(9 years ago) 2nd -11th grade ( 4yrs ago). I had to have another because my rods broke on me in the 9th grade, and the doc said oh your fine. Until I was about to sue him. Yes, like many of you, I too experience REALLY BAD pain. I have complained to my doctor so many times. Yet he feels as though Im making this stuff up. Im glad to be reading that I'm not alone. The worst pain happens in my back under the shoulder blade! the pain is unbarable sometimes. I feel like crying. I went to thearpy did not work. Lower back pain is bad too. I wish I knew of a pain relief.

I had scoliosis surgery back in 2004/2005 and am now experiencing pain in my mid-back, definately not muscular pain, and it seems to centre around a clip that protudes a bit (I'm a skinny person). I almost wonder if it's not pressure being put on the clip or something of a severe nature. Luckily I see my specialist in a couple weeks. I'm actually kinda worried about the pain i'm experiencing, I can't lift my purse sometimes... even a simple back stretch when I'm tired will trigger a sharp stabbing pain right near the clip.

I had my first scoliosis surgery in 1989. I was 15 and had a double curve. The surgery went well and I didn't have any problems until almost 2 years later when I developed a bad infection from the rods and it ate through my skin and incision - really gross! I had to have the rods removed. That was is 1991. Slowly over the years the pain has gotten worse and worse. Now, at 36, I have a constant nagging pain just below the shoulder blades. I try to ignore it and take ibuprofen, but it doesn't always help. If I am active during the day, then when I sit for even 10 minutes and try to get up, I can't stand up straight for the lower back pain. There is a scoliosis specialist office here in Texas that I will be going to in February to discuss the pain. Hopefully, we can get it figured out.

I was first diagnosed with scoliosis in Grade 3, so i wasnt very old at the time, by summer time of 2001 (grade 6) i was sent down to Portland Oregon to have spinal surgery after having had worn a back brace for 6 years. It is now 10 years later and ive been living in nearly constant pain for about 4 years now. I was born with other health issues, but nothing as severe as my scoliosis, but that being said i have had 17 other surgeries and have become highly allergic to morphine and codeiene and demerol. I pretty much can only medicate naturally, so i have been self medicating with Marijuana for the last few years! The pain i am experiencing now involves tingling, numbness, sharp pains and enflamed muscles all around my right shoulder blade, my shoulder blade is out of place and you can see the small hump that was left from pre-surgery. The top of my right shoulder blade feels tender but numb to the touch, even as i am sitting here i have pins and needles in that entire area. When the pain is so severe it shoots through my nerves in my arm, i have even woken up in such pain that i am in tears and almost screaming out. The top of my spine where it meets my neck can also cause me trouble, when i bend down, head first to pick things up it feels like there is no blood circulation and feels like its rushing to my head. My lower back is slightly curved and very weak, if i sit with my legs up for too long i get numbing pains in my legs and hips. I feel as if the rod is failing its jobs and my back is slowly curving again, especially with my lower back things are definately shifting and seriously i have had so many surgeries go wrong, i am terrified of doctors!!

HI Bill,

My name's Lucy, I'm 26 yrs old and had surgery for severe scoloisis 13 years ago. I have a considerable rib hump, I've been ignoring it for years and nobody's ever mentioned how odd it looks, but i know it's noticeable. I'm reluctant to look further into how to eliminate this hump, maybe there isnt any way to do it, and i don't want to risk anything as there have been no problems so far with my back. Have you managed to find out anything more about the hump? xxxx

Yes, I had my surgery in 2006 and I am having severe lower back pain, I have seen 3 different doctors and I am now going to see the doctor who did my surgery to see what the problem is. I am sorry that you are going through that pain, it does hurt, and I hope that you get better.

I had kyphosis surgery about 4 years ago when I was 15 (the kyphosis surgery is almost identical to scoliosis surgery) a few months ago I started having back pain, particularly in my left shoulder blade and shoulder, then I noticed a lump on my scar that turned into a nasty absess. It turned up my rods had become disconnected from my spine and an infection had happened. I suggest if anyone is having any severe shoulder/shoulder blade pain to get it checked out immediately. I waited too long so they had to remove my rods and put new ones in, which was another intensive surgery in the middle of the first semester of my freshmen year of college. so definitely get it checked out, the longer you wait, the worse it gets. Rods CAN break or become disconnected, even if you didn't experience any physical thing that was particularly harmful
