I think feeling itchy might be a side effect from coming off the pain killers.

I am 38 years old and had my tonsillectomy last Friday, Sept 22nd. It has not been a fun process of recovery. Every single day has been painful! I've been on Percocet every 4 hrs for pain.

Sunday my husband had to make an emergency phone call to my Dr because my throat was almost swollen shut. The Dr called in 3 days worth of steroids for the swelling and said that the swelling was what was causing most of my pain and that he couldn't give me anything stronger for pain - the only other option would be to go to the ER and get a Demerol IV which would only be temporary relief.

I didn't hardly sleep at all until Tuesday night. I accidentally slept for 5 hrs straight and missed my pain meds! Big mistake! Woke up at 4:30 Wednesday morning in excruciating ear pain! Yes, good ol Day 5 - that's when my ear pain kicked in with a fury! The worst pain I've ever felt in
my life!

I'm now in day 8 and since then there has been no improvement to speak of and I'm wondering if I'm ever going to get any better. The Percocet doesn't even help my ear pain. I found it's better if I take 1 every 2 hrs instead of 2 every 4 hrs - it keeps my pain level more constant at least. That way it never goes full blown by hour 4. I keep ice packs on my ears and neck constantly and that does seem to help a little. A cool mist humidifier at night also helps, I think.

My mom called the Dr. again yesterday and he said I'm just one of the unlucky ones that has the bad recoveries and that I just have to hang in there.

Anyway, I just wanted to post my experience because reading everyone else's has been a big encouragement to me. It's helped me to know that I'm not losing my mind during this terrible recovery process.

I had my tonsills removed on Sept. 25 so I'm on day 9 and still miserable. The ear pain is ridiculous and it still hurts to drink or eat.. Up until yesteday I was able to drink water without any problems, but now it burns to drink or eat anything, including water! At night I lay down and my ears are just throbbing. I feel like someone has a lighter to my throat and ice pics in my ears just stabbing them. I've had chronic ear infections my whole life, but this ear pain is almost the worst! I just want a pizza so bad... And real food and drinks. I want my life back! Has anyone else had any problems with drinking water after over a week?

41 y.o. - I had my surgery (tonsillectomy & uvulolectomy) on Sept 27 & I'm dying here on day 8! I had no idea it was going to be like this. The doctor said it would be unpleasant - but I've never had any kind of surgery or procedure before to put this into context (better or worse than what?). I had no idea that in the 21st century that we couldn't successfully manage pain from a procedure that was first practised in ancient Rome!

This is my first real foray into modern medicine & I've got to say - I'm not much impressed. Is every surgery going to be like this!?

I haven't eaten anything - and the doc says that's OK. Heck, I can only manage tepid tap water & every drop is excrutiating. I've settled into a strict routine of pain & water management - pure survival mode. Fortunately, intense pain is a good appetite suppresant - the mere thought of food makes me shudder!

The big thing that threw me for loop is that I didn't know that things would not only NOT get progressively better one day at a time, but it would be the exact opposite. The doc keeps saying 10 - 14 days before you start feeling better - heck, I'd be happy w/some assurance that I've hit rock bottom & am on the upswing. The reality has been that every time I think I might have made a break-thru - the break-thru has be a new, all-time low!

Please - someone throw me a bone! At what point did you start feeling better - or at the very least, stop getting worse?

Thanks for indulging my boo-hooing!

I'm 26, and just had mine removed 4 days ago, and now i am seriosly worried... they said that the whitespots and mucus would be normal, but now its all green and tastes and smells septic, i fear i might have an infection
i was given the pink antibiotics (ear-ache-bubble-gum-drink) but that does NOT seem to be staving this off... i took some listerine gargle the second day to see if that would work, and it hurt like hell, plus i was told not to use it cause its too caustic to the sore tissues, so i got crest procare... any advice? o.O

I had tonsils removed Sept.8 2006. At age 48 I was told the pain would be bad. Day 2 fluids, broths ,ice cream, and popsickles. Day 3 was bad with very little sleep and only water with meds.Day 6 was another bad day as the scabs were healing, by day 12 I felt I was on road to recovery.I lost about 15 pounds went from 185 lbs to 170 lbs. Day 15 I could eat most foods with minimal pain. Now a month into recovery just slight thoat pain at night . What is bothering me is internal right ear pain as well as very sensitive to touch on just my right ear. I am assuming it is just nerve ending that will eventually get better.I feel I had a fairly good recovery and attribute it to drinking as much fluids as i could in the first week as per doctors orders.

Today is a week since I had my tonsillectomy. I have been living on Orange Gatorade until today, when I had to switch to water because the Gatorade was burning. I have been eating mac n cheese, pudding, jello, rice soup, and eggs. The Dr. prescribed Lortab(Hyrdocodone APAP), Prednisone(a steroid), and Amoxcillin. The Steroid works wonders, it gives you a false sense of painlessness. She gave me only 3 days worth and once that was gone, oh lordy. I definitely expected to be much worse off.
Day 5 I went to Ibprofen and tylenol PM, woke up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain, took some Lortab fell back asleep, woke up again in excruciatiing pain, took some more Lortab. I have felt some of the ear pain, like it was draining, creating an ache. Today, I am back on the Ibprofen, I have to be off the Lortab to be able to drive, and hopefullly go back to work tomorrow.
I cannot wait to have a cheesburger and fries, I hope in the next few days I will!!

8) 46, F , Surgery on 11 OCT today is day 9. MOM! Come back. Who'd have thought the worst is yet to come?

I was well warned to expect the worst sore throat of my life. Which, as it turns out, is true. But I was not prepared for the yo-yo good day/bad day.

I was beginning to think I was losing my mind. Each day brings a new delusion to my now psychotic mind. Thank God I ran across this blog, if I believed all my mind was telling me, I'd surely be dead by mid day! What with my ears, jaw, teeth, tongue, throat, scab, stiches, what a treat to discover that my experience is shockingly like most others and not the slow torturous death it seemed to be all.

One of my delusions was my jaws and teeth hurt from taking my pain meds early. Wrong! No more waiting 4 hours or when I feel pain, I'm going to every 2 hours now. Time heals all wounds they say, now where did I see that time machine.....

Had my tonsils taken out on Oct 11th. I love food, so I'm really hurting. It's really getting to me that every day I wake up I have to go through this hell again. I want Pizza, Hamburgers, Fries, and a Coke!!!

I can't taste anything right now, and what little I can taste is bitter because of all the c**p in my throat. Every time I swallow it's an ugly adventure. It hurts, and I'm getting really frustrated. You all on this board are all my brothers and sisters in pain as far as I'm concerned. Thank you all so much for sharing.

I am on day three of the Tonsillectomy Recovery. So far the pain has been pretty constant, and I am worried it will get even worse as time goes by.

I have found life barable doing this:

Taking pain meds at regular intervals, Morphene every 6 hours, Codiene every 4 hours
Ice on my neck/under chin
Constantly drinking cold water
Occational cold soup

I hope I can keep going like this.

Okay, there is a little hope. Today, October 24, is day 13 for me. There is still a bit of pain and discomfort, especially when I swallow, but it's bearable. What's not bearable is the fact that I only tast about 25 % of what I eat!!! Food starts to taste like mush and it's very frustrating!! I really miss food!!! My God I think I'm going to eat the whole darned turkey when Thanksgiving comes around!!! I plan on doubling the weight I've lost during this horrible surgery. :-P

I am on day six of the Tonsillectomy Recovery and the pain has become unbearable. Yesterday I had a bad reaction to the pain killers. I felt like I had a really bad flu with body aches, headaches, dizziness, and chills. Under doctors orders I stopped taking the pills and now the flu symptoms are gone but I am in horrible pain.

I think I ‘d rather live with the flu symtoms

damn those doctors and nurses for not explicitly telling me:
"This will be the worst pain of your life"

Its day five and I just woke up with razor blades in my throat after only two hours sleep. The pain spreds through my head like wild fire. First to the ears were its relentless then to the temple and forhead where it pounds. I feel as if my head is going to explode.

Icing helps but it takes for ever to have an effect. My throte is so dry but I feel as tho my head will explode if I take anouther drink.

I am sitting on the egde of my bed rocking with a bag ice on my neck. It is dark and quite so the pain is my only sence. My fiance is sleeping next to me, (she is a heavy sleeper), she's dreaming of something pleasent as she is laughing in her sleep.

The rasor blades are starting to come loose and I can drink more steadidly. But with my head still bounding I can't remember if I've already choked down some morphene pills.

sh*t!

Iam so F'd up cuz I havn't aten or slept a decent amount for days.

Well thats my real time account of waking up five days after a TONSILLECTOMY. I hope who ever is reading this is wise, unlike me, and is doing so before surgery. I don't know if it was worth it yet but I will surely post my opinion when I decide.

:'( I am a 32yr old woman and I had my tonsillectomy on 27th October 2006. I am now 10days post op and boy have I suffered. Apart from bleeding heavily during the operation, and having the worst pain I have ever experineced, being unable to do anything and feeling like c**p was the worst. I was readmitted for 4 days due to post op infection and lack of fluids. I simply could not eat or open my mouth to drink. I had IV fluids ands antibiotics, and as soon as i could take a few sips of water i was discharged. still feeling awful. I am now 10 days post op and still feel terrible and only taking small amounts of diet and fluid. I say good luck to anyone planning to have a tonsillectomy and if i knew then what i know now i wouldnt have gone through with it at all . xx
