You don't need to worry about your daughter, its easy for children. its the old u get the worse it gets. just make sure she gets lots of rest after.
I find that drinking milk helped. for the first few days i was only drinking ribena (blackcurrant juice) but i realised that it was that which gave me so much pain. so i had a cold glass of milk and found it really helped. andother thing which is really good if your hungry is quavers (not sure if you get them in america) can just suck on the and the disolve in your mouth. am now on day 10 and my throat is practically clear of all scabs and am drinking pretty much normally, i jsut cant swallow as much in one go as i could before. as for eating its still painfull to eat but no where near as bad as it was a few days ago. and my speech is going back to normal too... so there is light at the end of the tunnel... you just have to go through hell to see it.
given the choice now, knowing what ive been through i wouldnt do it again. id rather live with tonsilitous.

well hello everyone i am now on day 11, and it is nice to be able to eat real food again. i have to take it really slow and really chew but i have been able to eat. i had corn on the cob and about a half of a half of a burger lol. i also noticed that i can drink as much as i could before. my voice is almost normal. i am in alittle pain right now, but that could be i was talking alittle more today than i have in the past few days. i can honestly say that i am glad that i went thru this. it was bad in the beginning, but it does get better. as for what it feels like when the scabs come off, well it is not the best feeling. you will definetly know when they do come off. i am just not exactly sure how to describe it, but u will know. i am still off from work for the rest of this week, i am hoping to go back next monday the 4th of june, but if the doctor says i should take another week off, because of the dusty environment i work in, haaa i am not gonna cry about it XD

I had my tonsillectomy on friday the 25th so im on day 4. Im 22.
i wasnt expecting this pain at all. its not how i thought it would be.
ive been able to eat regular food: toast, chips, pasta etc but it does hurt. ALOT.
my doc said this was much better and would get the scabs down.
but my scabs arent going down.
theyre huge and white and very uncomfortable. they go from the base of my tongue to the roof of my mouth almost.
ive been told no ice cream or dairy as it will conjeal at the back of the mouth so ive stuck with popsicles which offers a temporary relief.
Im on co codamol and another pain med that im too tired to go get the name of!
WHEN DOES THIS GET BETTER?
the mornings are agony and make me cry which doesnt help either!
crying when you cant swallow is ridiculous!
any help/suggestions/experiences with timeframes?

Wow-I am surprised your doctor approved you eating...I am strictly forbidden off all bread products for 10 days. I am on day 9 right now...I am afraid to say it hasn't gotten much better yet. Sleep as much as you can.Chew gum-that REALLY helps the ear pain. I made hot chicken broth last night, and inhaled the vapors before I drank it. The warmth felt VERY good as opposed to the cold. Cold felt good early on, but now warm does. You are right about ice cream-it makes mucas in your throat and that doesn't feel good. ( Itried it about day 3...bad idea). Anyway-hang in there. I am 28, and was expecting this to be worse. I hope to go back to work in a coule days, but was told if I was still on my meds I couldn't. (Apparently if you are on narcotics, they don't want you teaching children!!)

Hi, I am 41 years old and had my tonsils out 10 days ago and am very glad i did even thru the pain i would still do it again. I was taking liquid meperdinine for pain also i found that over the counter cepacol throat lozenges work ok, just have to be careful not to swallow them, and a really big life saver was getting a couple of bags of ice and keeping an ice pack around.I kept an ice pack on my neck and throat for the first couple of days. And for nausea the doctor prescribed phenergan, you dont have to swallow it its like a cream you rub onto your wrist and it really does help get rid of nausea.

Well I'm well and truly recovered from my tonsillectomy. Its nearly 2 months on now, and I feel fine. The only change I've found from when I had tonsils to when I don't, is now I sneeze more violently - which is a bit peculiar but doesnt hurt or anything.
I just suffered my first cold since the operation, and I was surprised that it was no worse without tonsils.
Good luck to all of you in the big tonsillectomy family out there! Get lots of sleep, avoid dairy and citrus, and keep a heatpack nearby.

hi. im the 22 year old from a few posts ago who had her op on the 25/05.
im now on day 8 and im feeling much MUCH better.
its always the mornings and the nighttimes that hurt the most for me but the difference now is, the days are okay!
i find having jelly first thing in the morning with my painkillers helps. it moistens the back of my throat (i think a dry scabbed throat is the worst feeling ever).
and then after that i can pretty much have what i want.
i even went outside yesterday much to the shock of my family who've seen me as the walking dead for a week.
im still taking it slowly. dont want to make it bad again.
but i remember how hopeless i felt going through the worst of it, so im leaving a positive message!
hope you all feel better soon.

Hello,
I'm 52 yeard old male, I had coblation tonsillectomy 7 days ago. Believe it or not I didn't have any significan bleeding or pain. During seven post op days, I took 3 vicodnin and 8 tylenol 500 mg tablets. Most severe pain I experienced was on post op 5 days during evening I had severe ear and throat pain, whick vicodin helped. I lost 6 pounds and started to work out at the gym, post op 4 days. I shouldn't workout due to possible bleeding but I felt fine and I didn't bleed so I do workout everyday.
Everyone should find a ENT that does coblation tonsillectomy! Also, I don't have bad breath, confirmed by my girlfriend and friends. From first day post op, I started to gargle and rinse my mouth with ocean salt water with hydrogen peroxide. Maybe, Keflex 500 mg bid helped.
I'll admit when I get up in the morning, my throat hurts but not enough to take vicodin. Just rinse your mouth with salt water with hydrogen peroxide. Must drink lots of water, tea and juices.

So happy to have found this board. I am 10 days post surgery and I thought I was the biggest loser on the planet. It's so true that no one quite understands the pain of this operation as an adult. I have had two children and can certainly take pain. I have been going stir crazy however because the pain is so intense! I am very careful with pain meds because of the liver damage it can cause. I can barely make it between doses. The first 5 days seem like a breeze compared to the last few days I've had. The pain meds do not take away all the pain but they do manage to take some of the sharp edges off. I have switched from cool packs to a heating pad and that helps. At day 3 I managed to eat mac and cheese but NOTHING since. I have managed to take multi vitamins to give me some nutrition. I never would have believed that at day 10 all I can still tolerate is ice chips and popsicles and coffee. I have danon yougurt drinks and carnation instant breakfast but the burning it causes makes my cry and is just not worth it. Nothing is! I went from 130 pounds to 120 in ten days. I wasn't aware you could survive for 10 days on water and pain drugs. I hope I can tolerate some food soon. The only upside is that I haven't had to take my GERD meds since I have had zero food. Scabs haven't started coming off yet. Got that to look forward to I guess. I am headed back to work in 3 days so I hope this drastically improves.

The worst pain I have been having is my ears. I haven't even been aware of the throat pain because whenever I swallow I get THROBBING pain in my ears. I also get a terrible headache and almost start to cry because it is so horrible. I'm 17 and am on day 5 of post op. Nothing is helping with the ear pain. I took my lortab elixir and went to sleep. I woke up an hour later and my ears hurt the worst I've ever felt. I was bawling when I woke up. I couldn't handle it. I wish there was some secret remedy to get rid of the ear pain, because that's been my only problem. Too bad it's been hell.

I bought some vicks 44 sore throat spray. It actually helps my throat AND MY EARS almost immediately after I spray it. It doesn't last long but it may provide relief for you all until your meds kick in. My ears ached but didn't turn violent until about day 7 or 8. I was using ice packs until my meds kicked in then. The Lortab did little for me other than take away the urge to shoot myself due to the horrid pain. I am now on day 13 and still quite miserable. I am taking 2advil every 4-6 hours and it makes it so I can function but not happily.
