hey all...i went through what you guys are going thru right now...i had my tonsils out on Nov 10th and the first 2 days were a breeze...hardly any pain and i was eating pasta and mashed potatoes...mostly semi-solid food...well then Monday came around and WOW the pain set in! Not even the morphine i was on was helping at all, and to make things worse some of the food that i'd eaten was sticking to my tonsil beds and smelled nasty and felt worse...i was instructed to slide them off with a Q-tip and that would help out--which it did...but it hurt like hell at first until i found the correct amount of pressure. Try not to eat bread-y or starchy foods because they stick a lot and cause pain and problems...
My ear pain wasn't all that bad, but i did notice the throat pain was the worst around 9-10pm and right away when i woke up...thats because it's so dry and you don't swallow a lot when you're sleeping! I would definitely suggest a humidifier--that helped me out SO much! I also went through quite a bit of gatorade because it was the only thing i could stand the taste of (which i ironically can't drink anymore cuz it reminds me of the pain)!! Sherbet and those Italian Ices work really well, even better than popsicle and ice cream--ice cream sticks to your throat and makes you cough, and the popsicles don't melt quick enough to numb your throat as it slides down...but the sherbet and the italian ice work perfectly to numb it!
I'd also suggest not to eat anything citrusy--HORRIBLE PAIN! also try your hardest not to sneeze! My first sneeze was on day 11 and even then it hurt like hell....yawning takes awhile to get used to. i'm almost a month post-op and can only now fully yawn.

Surgery on Monday, 12/4/06. I am 46 and it looks like a half-dollar size opening on each side. White stuff gone, on liquid Codeine [120 mg/12 mg per 5 mL] and liquid [Amoxicillan 250MG/5ML susp.-pink in color].

Since the "holes" are huge, food gets caught in there and I read not to gargle. Drinking water seems to be the only thing that helps. Popsicles good first day but very sensitive to cold. Day 3 (today) I ate cream of wheat, chicken noodle soup, and plenty of fluids.

When I stop liquid intake, I feel like I swallow razor blades.

Hey all,

I had my tonsils out on Nov 30 and I'm now on day 8. The first day was actually pretty good, but days 2-5 were nasty. This is when I first noticed the grey-white scabs forming in the back of my throat. My breath smelled HORRIBLE, I could hardly swallow anything, and I got horrible advice from the nurse, who told me to eat plenty of ice cream. The milk creates mucus, which is just really uncomfortable. Water is good at whatever temperature you can handle it at, but what is probably best for you is Ensure, Boost, NutraFit or whatever vitamin and protein-enriched drink you can get at the supermarket. I heard slimfast is also good, but I haven't tried it. This will give your body the nutrition it needs when you can't eat anything.

Two days ago, however, I started getting the ear pains and was basically incapacitated. I couldn't swallow ANYTHING, and whatever I tried to swallow only made it all hurt more. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that this meant that my scabs were falling off, which menat that it would all be over soon. Right now (about 8 PM) I'm feeling a bit better, though not brave enough to try and swallow anything. By the way, what helped a LOT with the ear pain (which actually originates in your throat) is that numbing throat spray or any numbing substance you can gargle with. I've also heard that heating pads help a lot, though I don't have any to try.

I hope the worst of it all is over, though only time will tell. Good luck to you all, and try to brush your teeth whenever you can. A clean mouth will make you feel a bit happier - trust me!

Hey Guys,
I'm 34 years old and had my tonsils out on Nov. 29th. I'm now on day 13. It's definitely getting better each day. For the first 2 days, I was so surprised by how little pain I was in (probably due to the liquid Hydrocodone), but on day 3...I thought I was going to die!! My tongue and throat hurt SO bad. The doctors said that this would happen due to the clamp they used to keep my tongue out of the way. It hurt SO bad to swallow, not so much because my throat was sore..which it was, but because it hurt to use the muscles to swallow..did anyone else have this?
It hurt to eat anything from day 3 - day 6. I was forced to eat watered down mashed potatoes or yogurt, just to take the pain med. I even had trouble sipping water. The hydrocodone started to make me really nauseous and had to switch to liquid TYlenol w/ Codeine by day 4 or so. I remember being up most of the night due to the pain. Luckily, I never threw up, but I really thought I was going to! I didn't have the stinky scab problem, thank God!! I still have some part of the scabs, but they're almost gone. I noticed a big change once they started falling off. I was able to swallow with little pain. I started gargling (gently) by day 3. It was painful, but I think it definitely helped.
I lost about 7 pounds since the surgery. I'm now off of all pain medicine. It's definitely getting better. Talking is still rough, I can talk and I do, but it makes my throat a lot more sore afterwards. I'm starving too! All I can think about is PIZZA!!! I've been living on over-cooked mac & cheese, Ensure (room temperature) and warm Oat Bran. I go back to work in 3 days. I'm a fitness instructor, so I'm hoping my throat heals enough for me to be able to talk by then! I also have a big holiday party on Friday. I hope I can have a glass of wine!!! How long are you supposed to wait to drink alcohol.

hello,
im 16, and i had my tonsils and adenoids out yesturday (mon, dec/11) and i'm doing alright i guess. i had mono in sept. 05 so im somewhat used to the throat pain, but my jaw/lip crease/tongue hurt aswell as the throat. where my upper and lower lip meet got cut (in surgery im guessing) so it's scabbed over, and on the sides of my tongue there are 2 raised bumps from the clamp i think. they hurt, aswell as my jaw (from being stretched open). im eating jello, chocolate pudding, sunny-d, chicken noodle soup, and chocolate milk... and lots of water. had a bit of trouble sleeping last night... fell asleep for a half hour, then woke again, and randomly through the night. im guessing my 'auto-swallow' pain woke me up.

ill keep ya posted :-|

hey again

yesturday my ears started hurtin a bit - and im a drummer so that's a problem... im also the only goalie on my hockey team and i'll be missing 3 games in the next 2 weeks. the childrens liquid tylonol ran out on tuesday, pity cause it tasted good. i started on ice cream last night, and have have chicken noodle soup a few times. that helps speaking. when im home alone, i hate answering the phone cause it forces me to try to speak normal. my breath (from the healing i guess) is stinkin', but at least i know its a good sign. a tip: brush your teeth and tongue at night and morning. my jaw has stopped hurting, and my tongue is healing a bit. i wake up at night less and less.

all's well

This has been so helpful! I'm 22 years old, on day six and still dying from the pain. My Hydrocodon makes me so sick so I have to eat before which I can only take three spoonfulls of whatever I'm eating before my ears feel like they're going to explode! It's the only thing that works well enough, though I still can't even swallow being on it. I work graveyard and probably came back too early, but it's horrible because I have to yawn so much and THAT is the worst thing EVER! From what I've read it sounds like that white stuff is scabs? Doctor didn't tell me anything about those, but they don't smell! Thank goodness! I am, however, not looking forward to them falling off?! Oh my goodness, I had no idea that was even coming! I've had enough, I don't need that to look forward to. I sure hope this will all be over soon! For all of us :-D

ask your doctor to prescribe Zofran (ondansetron hydrochloride), 4 mg every eight hours. it IS a pill, but it's very thin and easy to swallow. it's what i take with my hydrocodone, it helps alot.

are you working just six days after your surgery? i really feel for you!

32 yo female, I'm on day 5 after my tonsillectomy and it looks like I'm not the only one suffering the day 5 blues. I'm not really frustrated by what I can't eat, just by the constant ear/throat pain, the stupid faces I have to pull every time I swallow anything, the agony of a sneeze, the sleepless nights...! Plus I got severe nausea from my pain meds on day 3 and had to cut back to plain paracetamol because of my sensitive gut, so my pain gets quite severe.

Have been drinking loads of water although its painful, and sucking ice chips and only soft foods, but since I am on day 5 and therefore getting WORSE its hard to tell how helpful this is...I may as well be eating rocks and drinking razor blades, I don't think it would be any more painful!!

I'm glad I stumbled across this page, I thought I was being a real sissy because a friend got his tonsils out a week before me and recovered really quickly. I saw him on his day 5 at a party, drinking beer!

A couple of people have mentioned heat pads - would this not run the risk of causing bleeding? The nurse at hospital told me not even to wash my face in hot water as it can cause bleeding.

Will keep you posted of my recovery as this forum has been useful to me. No christmas pudding or turkey though, I think I can safely say...

35 female on day 9 after surgery. I can say its getting a little better, but boy when the pain comes back, its like starting all over. Two days ago, I started my third bottle of medicine (hydrocodone-500 mg), which did nothing, but sometimes made me sleepy.
Sleep, what's that? It has been so hard to get sleep, because either way you are going to wake up with horrible pain from dry mouth. I lived on jello, apple sauce, water and gatorade for the last 9 days. Although, the last couple of days, I have found that hot tea is wonderful and soothing. Also, the heating pad is very helpful also.
I dont see any scabs when I check, but it is full of mucus. Any idea how to get rid of that?
I was having another sleepless night, so around 5 this morning I ran across this page, and I am so happy I did. Like many others have said, I felt like I was the only one suffering this horrible pain for so long.

I'm 17. I just got my tonsils out on the 21st. So, this is the dreaded Day 5. It's not really all that bad. It hurts... but inbetween swallowing, I don't feel much pain. I have a few medications I take... I take the pink medicine and I have 2 pain medications. 1 of them is for moderate pain.... which I haven't tried yet because it requires drinking a lot of water... and the other one is for severe pain. The only downfall to the severe pain medicine is that it causes nausea, so I have this transdermal gel I rub on my wrist and it stops the nausea. I know, it's weird... but it works. I haven't eaten very much, but from what I have eaten, I find that warm food feels better on my throat than cold. Ice cream hurts way more than the mashed up baked potatoes I have been eating. I've also discovered that if I prolong swallowing saliva for a while and I just sort of forget to swallow for a few minutes, then it collects... and since there is two initial parts to swallowing, I hang on to the first part which is just pushing the saliva to the back of my throat and instead of taking the second swallow I just let it set there a second until I feel my throat is less constricted, then I swallow. It's gross... but it helps with the pain. I am also trying the whole chewing gum thing. It helps... but only with small pieces of gum. Big pieces of Bubblicious hurt my jaw a lot... but the little rectangle Trident kind is good. I don't really have scabs either. It's just like a protective white/gray mucus... and I hope that comes off soon. I can't wait to be healed. :'( I wish you guys the best of luck and that some of my tips work for you as well.

I am on day 10 now and starting to feel better - I still have pain in the ears and pain on swallowing, but nowhere near as severe as the last few days. Yesterday was the first time I have felt able to leave the house since the op. Days 5-8 were the worst, in fact I have never felt pain like that before in my life. :-( As I can't take strong pain killers (due to nausea) I kept sane by taking paracetamol on waking, ibuprofen after each meal, and paracetamol again before bed (and sometimes in between meals as well if needed), plus I would always wake in the night (in agony) and take codeine as this was the time the pain was the worst. I also gargled lightly with iodine mouthwash 3 times a day, and used difflam spray every 2 hours. Also sucked on ice a lot, and used icepacks on the neck and over the ears to numb everything as much as possible. Basically my whole day was made up of trying to ease the pain!

A couple of bright sparks suggested to me that I eat normal foods like toast to try to move the 'scabs' (or mucous layer), which I did a few times and it only made the pain worse. I'm back on soft foods and will remain so until I feel better. (I have been buying baby food as it is quite nutritious and soft, and some of it is really gourmet these days!)

I hope you all start to feel better soon. I will say this - after such incredible pain for so long, when I did start feeling better yesterday I felt on top of the world simply because I wasn't crippled by pain! Its great to come out the other side of something like this!

I'm so glad I'm not alone. Reading this whole messageboard has been a real comfort. I'm on day 9 and the earache, which has been tormenting me for the last few days, is finally starting to subside. Of course when I sleep, I have to strategically position myself. I can't lie completely on my side, because if I do, it feels as if a heavy marble is pushing into my ear.

The doctor said I would probably be fine after about a week, so my family decided to keep the reservation in Tahoe for 6 days after the surgery. BAD IDEA! I thought I would just sleep in the car, lounge about the hotel room, and take in the scenery. But my ears were in such pain the entire time and although the hydrocodone helped a bit, it gave me the worst headaches. The driving made it worse because the change in pressure kept making my ears pop! I have come to despise soup and ice cream. I totally agree with everyone who says to stay away from dairy if possible, because it creates unnecessary excess phlegm. I really like my carbs, so to satisfy those cravings, I would suck on saltine crackers until they turned to mush and swallow carefully.

A lot of you are talking about your scabs, but I haven't even been able to see the back of my throat. Does anyone else have trouble opening their mouths wide enough after more than a week? Good luck to everyone during recovery!

On day 14 now, and hang in there everyone because I am now 95% well again and feeling great. I have minor discomfort on swallowing, but no earache any more (and that was the worst bit, I think) and haven't needed pain killers of any sort for 2 days.

I agree that dairy is probably not the best thing, it made me feel all gluggy in the throat.

In reply to Emrld525, I couldn't open my mouth properly for 10 days due to the bruising and swelling either, I think this is pretty normal. If I got at the right angle with a mirror and torch I could see the white bits in my throat though!

Hope you all have a speedy recovery
