Well, I am 40 years old and just spent two days in ICU following removal of my tonsils that were removed when I was a kid, but grew back, along with lingual tonsils under my tongue, which I did not even know we had, along with a swollen node under the left side of my tongue. It has been pure hell to say the least. I had no idea it would hurt so bad. My throat had been swollen since July and no antibiotics were helping and I was simply sick all the time. I am hoping this helps, because I am absolutely miserable. Today is day three after the surgery and it still hurts to just swallow water! And I am so very thirsty but can't drink, it hurts to the point of tears. I am on liquid oxy and it does help, but puts me to sleep. Please tell me how to get some liquids down, I am so thirsty!

I am 18 years old and I had my op. Nov. 1st. So technically have 11 days since surgery. I've read that the scabs fall off 5-10 days after surgery. THEY ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY. Nobody can stand my breath I am left with locking myself in my room. I keep coughing since yesterday. A piece of the scab from my left side fell of already but the rest (which is MOST of the scab) seems pretty "stuck" on to my throat. I also am one of those non-complaining patients. But this is driving me nuts. If they don't fall of SOON (meaning NOW) I am just going to start crying. I am pretty good from the pain which is gone totally and I can swallow fine now, and I am back to my regular diet since about the 5th-6th day. Anybody has any tricks for the scab to fall off?

Well I found on a website that eating toast "drowned" with butter helps the scab fall of. I am actually trying this. I feel my scab "giving" in but hey I don't see it falling off! Oh lordy! Hope it helps anybody else around here.

I had a big chunk of scab fall 0f when I was eating not so mushy oatmeal.

Anyone know how long it take for your taste buds to come back to normal?

I feel horrible for all of the people with such bad accounts of their tonsillectomy! I'm 23 and had mine removed just 4 days ago. I have had a few complications, but as far as the pain goes, mine is well controlled. They started my on the Oxy syrup which I had to discontinue as it made me very sick. Vomiting with all that going on in your throat is not pleasant! The Vicodin syrup makes me feel fine with less side affects and thank god I am not passing out all the time now.

I had to get some IV fluids tonight as I had lost my appetite for food and drink entirely and ended up quite a bit dehydrated. With the fluids and medicine to control the nausea I am feel pretty good so far. I still don't have much of an appetite but as long as I can keep fluids going in I think I'm going to do alright.

The cauterized white stuff also started sliding off tonight, and I helped it along a bit with a Q-Tip. Once I got some of the built up crud wiped away that improved the feeling in my throat quite a bit as well.

I've learned to avoid all dairy products while I'm recovering, no matter how tempting a milkshake may be. It just builds excess phlegm and does not feel good. Apple juice feels great and ice cold Coke feels nice too. Cheap popsicles have a good numbing effect and help to keep you hydrated. The more hydrated you are the less pain you will have, I've been told. So keep drinking!

My pain level has increased a touch, and my right ear is driving me nuts. I was due to go back to work tomorrow but that wont be happening. Yesterday had the worst pain, and this morning was rough as well, but I can finally last longer between pain meds.

Since I felt so well early on I had started by eating soft but solid foods, and I have had to stop that. My appetite is back, but the effort it takes to swallow is not worth it. My next few days are going to be a diet of popsicles and yogurt. Anything more tends to get stuck where the tonsils once were and that does not feel good! I still get random nausea but I'm sure it's because now I'm really hungry! The second I can tackle it, I'm going for Chinese!

Also, is it just me, or have some of you had problems with frequent burping/hiccuping? It's driving me crazy!! As if I wasn't sore enough, I'll uncontrollably burp or hiccup (I had a fit of hiccups yesterday! Sooo frustrating)! I rarely hiccup or burp in the first place, so it's a tad annoying that I am doing it so often when I would REALLY prefer not to!

I had that discomfort too! I had lots of hiccuping for some reason! And also burping, just by itself. I mean I did not help it along I just burped. But I started eating about "normal" about the 5th day after surgery. It IS worth to eat. It gets you better faster. It might have hurt, but I was way better about the 8-9th day. Today I have two weeks. I am still waiting for my friendly little scabs to go away. They have reduced about 80% but I still have some. I hope it goes away SOON.

Best wishes

I'm cooking some rice in mushroom soup and I'm going to try and eat that. My stomache says feed me, and I think it (my stomache) would be a little more considerate if it thought my throat couldn't handle it.

I had a lot of burping and hiccuping the first couple days, and it's not as bad now, but I just thought it was very odd. I imagine that the little nerve that controls those functions is a little upset by the surgery!

I had my tonsils out on the 17th - and I was doing really well the first two days - but then on Sunday it got really crummy - and all the white exudate formed. I feel like I can't swallow very well - and I have that same burping thing! I am drinking a lot of water and I am also guzzling the blue gatorade. I have been successful eating grits that are runny and also potato soup that is runny. Anything else has been too hard - unless I just took vicodan. I can't wait till I can see scabs - I just see a throat full of white and gray!!

I do not know what to do. I am 19 years old and I have never been in so much pain in my life. It is now 5:40 am and I still have not gotten any sleep. I was given Liquid Lortab, which helped at first, but now does not do anything for me. I need someone to tell me that it's going to get better. I feel like I'm going crazy and my mother thinks I'm being the hugest baby about it. I can't explain to her how it feels like I'm dying everytime I swallow or how my ears feel like they're going to explode. The worst pain I have is right when I wake up after sleeping for 3 or 4 hours. I need to know why this is. Someone.....anyone....just please talk to me.

You & I must have had our tonsillectomy on the same day. I thought last night I was going to die from the pain. I decided to force myself to wake up and gargle with water every two hours, following with a dose of my pain meds. It made me feel like I was cleaning out the bacteria, which probably only serves a psychological advantage. I also found it better to sit up straight to sleep with a neck pillow, and spit periodically through the night. The ear pain is awful now. I hope tonight will be better than last.

hey all tonsillectomy victims! this board has been the best emotional support i've got throughout my tonsil hell process. i'm 23 and i'm on day 7 of post op. it still hurts like crazy but it's comforting to know that it's normal. until i found this board, i thought i had really bad luck and was going through more pain than normal.

here's what my doc told me, in which nothing was true:
1) it will hurt the most days 2-3, and it'll start feeling better day by day after day 3
2) i will be able to have a normal thanksgiving dinner (4 days after my operation)
3) the meds she gave me would help (celebrex, tylenol max strength, antibiotics)

well, it's day 7 and it still hasn't improved, i'm still eating semi-liquid food, and the only med i find helpful is the liquid tylenol. none of my scabs has fallen off yet, so i don't know when i'm actually going to start healing. my scabs don't smell and i haven't had ear aches. this means either i'm lucky or i'm just super slow on the process.

i'm supposed to go back to work tomorrow, but i think i'm going to take at least another day off. i'm def in no condition to interact professionally. i also have a company holiday party next sat (in 6 days) that i've been looking forward to all year. looks like i won't be able to eat or drink normally then to enjoy it to the fullest.

i miss real food. i miss beer. i miss being able to talk. i really hope this is all worth it.

I'm 17 and I had my tonsils removed 6 days ago. Started eating mostly solid food the day after. Liquid Perkosette is keeping me going, but I'm trying to get off of it, going to classes all drugged up isn't working to well. But now I have the hiccups, is this bad? I'm not sure if my eating messed anything up.

:O

I had a tonsillectomy about 6 days ago and I am feeling much better than everyone here. Day 1 was the worse, but even on day 1, I was able to drink fluids and eat jello and buttered noodles. Today I had pancakes. The most important thing is to eat, drink, and talk. My dr. said this would make recovery quicker. I have been taking percocet to ease the pain but I stopped yesterday and have just been on tylenol. I think its very important to have a good dr.
