WOW!! Same thing here.. I'm 16 and I have the thing, I noticed it when like 1-2 years ago.. is anyone sure that it goes away? or is it just you have to build up upper body muscle?
ok this is pretty weird cuz im 15 as well and have the same problem haha. i asked my doctor about it and he said i have a minor case but i still get called uniboob and try to hide it when swimming and all that stuff. i started puberty pretty late so does that have anything to do with it? its not really affecting my life that much but just annoying me. i have one question for all of you, are all of you skinny like me to some extent? because i would imagine that this would emphasize it. anyway im glad i found this site because its very reassuring to know that it can go away around 18 and to read some advice. in fact i think i may go life weights now to bulk up my pecs...
i am 22 and i first noticed my pectus carinatum at about 6 or 7 years old. i was diagnosed with a growth condition when i was younger but my sternum grew at a very regular rate. it was once measured at protruding more than 4 1/4 in. it currently resides at about 2/12 to 3 in. i was in the air force the only thing i had to do was get a waiver signed saying that there was no limiting factors that the condition may cause. i know that the psych factor is pretty harsh on most. i have had it a long time so i have learned that it is part of me and i shouldnt hide from my self. when i was young i used to try and hide it but you would be amazed that a lot people dont really notice until you point it out or they see you with your shirt off. i still get the uniboob thing and a few other nick names ive picked up over the years but if someone makes a rude comment i will call them on it. i was never really able to do the brace thing because the condition isnt very common and i didnt see my first specialist until i was 11 or 12. at that point for me my chest was too pronounced and my only choice would have been surgery. at this point i dont have any heart conditions that i know about, i have minor scoliosis (curvature of the spine) which can be related to pectal irregularities, but nothing major. i have had many x-rays and they can be very important in the diagnosis that you receive. i have been told that my experience is different from most but its comforting to know what others are going through because it all seems to be close to the same story. by the way, what do girls think about your chests? that one is still a mystery to me it seems to be hit or miss.[/img]
Hi
I also have a protruding sternum.
I am now 17 and have had it for a few years now
I can't actually remember when it started
I went to the doctor a few years ago, but he wasn't too worried
He seemed to say that there were more problems if your chest caved inwards.
I am still hoping that it will dissappear by the time I'm 19!
I suppose I am quite concious about it especially as at 17 your want to look your best with girls around!
I am doing daily pressups and chest building exercises at the moment to try and improve things.
Reading some of the quotes about heart murmors has worried me a little because my long life dream has been to train as an airline pilot.
Although last year I did have a medical check which involved a cardiovascogram and the specialist didn't mention any problems with my heart. He didn't even seem to notice my chest or perhaps he was just being polite.
I am so pleased to have found this site as I have been wondering for a few years now.
Any advice is always most welcome

i just found out that loads of other people my age (15) have this protruding sternum thing - i just want to know what is it usually caused by?
Also does it actually disapear after a while, because to be honest trying to hide it with muscle seems a bit rubbish
Thanks

ok so yeah, ive had a petruding sternum since i was about 8 and still have its im now 20. ive don't the x-ray done the full body inflammation test and tried the brace. but when it comes down to it the only option is surgery, the brace is uncomfortable and never made a difference. not many doctors will want to operate on young patients because its so close to the heart. i tried for years, and now that im older its gunna cost me almost $30,000 is i want to get it fixed simply because it considered cosmetic because discomfort isn't pain. im 6" 1 and ive build my chest muscles over the years and i can honestly tell you that it makes no difference your pecks actually grow out almost sideways because petrudeing sternums point directly out like a arrow.
for those of you out their who are waiting for it to disappear like your doctors said, my dad 44 and he was a body builder and his sternum still shows. i was told since i gut my first x-ray, "give it a couple years", 12 years later now.

yo, im 14 and i noticed my sternum protrudes, but not extremely(like maybe 1 1/2 - 2 in.) im 5' 6", 106 lbs, and very bony. ive heard this can cause increased lung capacity, which could explain why i can still run well despite the fact that i rarely work out, as well as an enlarged heart.neither of my parents have this problem, so can anyone give me some answers.
I'm turning 22 in two days and I still have a pretty sever protruding sternum. I'm pretty sure I got it in my teens, and it hasn't ever gone down. Is it normal to have it so late in years?
I just noticed this late last year (around the time I turned 14) and get the uni-boob thing a lot, uni-boob is pretty much my nickname. It's pretty embarrassing, especially when your friends wanna go swimming and you have to make up an excuse. I'm not really tall (a little over 5' 3'') but the men in my family are pretty tall (closer to 6 ft.) I'm really skinny/bony too.
Some people on here have said they think it increases their lung capacity, but compared to other people my age my lung capacity is very low, I run out of breath pretty quickly. Low lung capacity is a problem for me because I play the saxophone which requires a larger lung capacity. I was wondering what could be done to fix it, building up muscle seems like it would be pretty hard cause it sticks out pretty far and it would take a large amount of muscle to make it look normal. I'm not sure if I want surgery but I don't really wanna have to wait 3-4 more years because it might go away.

ok so i have an pectus carinatum as well. i am 15 too coincidentally. It was only noticible once i reached puberty. umm well the doctor told me that it doesn't really affect my lungs at all, and that the only problem may be the appearance of my bone. yes it is quite noticeable but i got used to it. i started working out my chest and the doc told me that that might help. many people say that once im 18 it would be gone...so i guest everyone who has this bone abnormality just has to be a little patient.
hey, yeah i have this two, its directly in middle with to points that stick out i noticed it at 15, i am now 17 any exercises that can make this better? i am male by the way .
