Please pass this message on to everyone that has a pulsating/throbbing sensation behind their head. I have had this throbbing feeling behind my head for about 6 years now and I've finally found the culprit. I have had a misaligned C1 vertebrae (atlas bone) for many years now and I've gone to many chiropractors that said they can help me correct this issue, only to figure out that they were wasting my time. Not only was there manipulation techniques not doing anything, to add on, I was diagnosed with a short leg/short pelvis. That same chiropractor kindly gave me a heal lift to correct my short leg issue, which wasn't a real solution. A few years later, thank the Lord, I finally found the right chiropractor to help put my C1 bone back in place, which the other chiro failed to do, even when he cracked my neck over and over again. These chiropractors are named NUCCA chiropractors or Upper Cervical chiropractors. These chriropractors are the "real" chiropractors in the industry, and there work is very specific to the misalignment of the patient. After only 5 corrections, my neck pain is gone, my pelvis has been realigned, which also means that I no longer have a short leg anymore. To topp it all, my throbbing has lessoned greatly because the pressure on my brainstem has been removed and the blood flow to my brain has been restored. If anyone has any questions about this, please don't hesitate to contact me at

Hi Marji,
Did you ever try a chiropractor who does Gonstead technique? I've been to several general doctors then finally a neurologist and ENT (all expensive and useless, the gen. drs. misdiagnosed me and pumped me up on so many antibiotics and prednisone that I got sicker for a couple of months); I also tried deep tissue massage and acupuncture. I had to stop the massage because it was exacerbating tingling and numbness in my arms and hands. I am now trying chiropractic.
The first chiropractor I tried was not good (I actually went to him before the neurologist and ENT). A few weeks after the first chiropractor I went to the specialists and had a cervical spine MRI which shows several bulging discs between C3 and T1 and one narrowed hole (forgot the word for it) where nerves pass through in the C3-4 region. The radiologists and neurologist consider this normal and not a cause for my symptoms... severe localized neck pain on the left at C3-4, unusual headaches, dizziness, head pulsating that feels like buzzing/electricity and sometimes pumping and whooshing, behind the eye strain/pain, and tinnitus - all symptoms started at the same time 4 months ago as I was recovering from a monthlong severe and mysterious virus (I was on the couch for three weeks and think I may have tweaked my already slightly misaligned neck). After about 10 weeks with these symptoms my hands and fingers were starting to tingle off and on until finally my left arm started going numb for hours at a time almost every day - standing up, walking, or laying in a very specific position would help stop the numbness. How this can be considered normal by specialists is beyond me.
I decided to try another chiropractor who came highly recommend - he uses the Gonstead technique. He is far more knowledgeable on medical and chiropractic research than anyone I've seen (I went to a chiro in 2008 for a painful, stiff neck in the same area I have now - I could not turn my head to the left. He did xrays and it was resolved in about 5 adjustments). My new chiro did full spinal x-rays (I'm pretty crooked but have a fairly level pelvis). I can see where my neck has gotten a little worse from the 2008 xrays - it's now starting to bend in the wrong direction toward the bottom. I've had two neck adjustments in the last week. My arm tingling and numbness stopped after the first along with significant decrease in hand tingling. My hand and finger tingling/numbness is almost gone after the 2nd adjustment. I'm still suffering from chronic head pulsating and dizziness, tinnitus, and eye pain that comes and goes, but I expected it would take several adjustments to work through this. Oh, I also was tested by an audiologist and have mild-moderate genetic pattern hearing loss, which I already knew. They told me the tinnitus is from that and is permanent, but I have hopes that it will go away when I find the correct treatment since it started with all the other symptoms.
I was mostly curious if you have any comments on Gonstead chiropractors, or any further comments on the other chiropractors you saw or any other symptoms you resolved that you may not have mentioned in your post. I will definitely look into the upper cervical kind of chiropractor. I feel like my current guy is good but I'm sick of wasting time and money and want my life back. I can't imagine going through this for 6 years. It's been 4 months and I can barely function. I'm glad you are healed.
Yea felt enjoyment and relaxation a few times from it strangely enough but still left bewildered as to what it might be!! Mine started at a stressful time for me but years later I still have the pulsations on both sides of my head! Apparently it's stress related even though I don't feel stressed very often but the more I worry about it and become stressed the worse it gets so it's a tough call really. I'd imagine maybe taking some cannabis in a yogurt or tea might help us all chill out and not think so much about it. The main thing is to keep calm and if you start thinking about it, occupy yourself with something else and you'll find it goes away until the next time you get some minor stress that won't always but sometimes trigger it off again. ;-) I saw on another forum that it won't do any harm so try not worry

I've seen a Cardiologist & they've ruled out my heart and my neck... but your right this drains you & I have a very busy little girl at home to keep up with, I feeel miserable most of the time :( This began for me in December 2012.

Has been happening to me for the last 2 weeks or so, started about 3 days after i stopped taking my anxiety medication, escitlopram. anybody else recently stopped taking a prescribed medication that could possibly cause this?. One more week of this and im going to the doctor.
But bottom line, its normal when suddenly stop with these kind of medications, it will go away.
Pulsations are caused by lack of fiber in your diet (not that this is the cause for sure!!) so if you eat a banana every day for a few weeks it might help a little. I too have the same thing and it's a worry but the more you worry the more it happens unfortunately. Try stay stress free and when it happens think of something else other than focusing on the pulsation.
thanks spcfnz u helped me finding the issue thanks alot
I have similar condition and have seen all the specialists as you have mentioned. None of them was able to detect the cause. My neurologist wanted to prescribe me medication for anxiety but I declined because I was receiving acupuncture treatment. My condition lasted nearly 5 years now but pulsation in the head still remains, though to a lesser extent.
I am quite careful with my diet and I exercise regularly, running 4 km each time. These don't help eliminate the pulsation however.
I HAVE THIS STRONG PULSATION IN MY HEAD AND MY HANDS SINCE ROUGHLY 3 MONTHS NOW. iT IS MOSTLY THERE AT NIGHT AND PREVENT ME FROM SLEEPING PROPERLY. I WONDERED IF CERTAIN HORMONES CAN CAUSE THIS ANNOYING FEELING. I AM STARTING TO WORRY ABOUT THIS. THERE IS NO PAIN AT ALL BUT IT IS A VERY STRANGE FEELING. ALTHOUGH IT IS THERE MOSTLY AT NIGHT IS OFTEN START AT THE END OF THE DAY. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE...

I get all the same symptoms that you are feeling. I have chronic ear infections all my life. I'm thinking about getting tubes placed back in my ear for some dizzy symptoms of the built up fluid. But, I also feel this sensation through or it shoots through by whole body and face, like bouncy or bubbly like. My blood pressure remains at normal range all day long, but I eat horribly...gonna eat more raw foods, and organic
I just reviewed a lot of peoples experiences and it appears there are a lot of similar things being discussed, but this pattern matched my situation:
What I can describe as pulsations in my head, not like a circulatory pulse, but just one or two pulsations that feels like my brain is "turning off" for a second, like the feeling when you are trying to stay awake, but you momentarily almost fall asleep. It happens sporadically, and doesn't really interfere with anything. It isn't really unpleasant, just somewhat alarming.
I noticed that a number of people commented that they had recently stopped taking some SSRI like Zoloft. I too, have stopped taking Citalopram on a daily basis. I believe when you stop taking these drugs, you are supposed to gradually reduce the dose to avoid withdraw symptoms. I would say for me, and some others on the list, this is the cause.

Hope this helps someone!
