Greg.

Awesome post. I have posted the last couple of posts as guest.

After reading that, I wanted to jump up and yell "HELL YEA!!" but it is late and the wife is asleep. :-)

Anyways, congrats on the first month, it gets easier every week. I am fast approaching 14 months on my birthday. My wife and I have been celebrating every month. This month we get to celebrate it in the Mayan Riviera in Mexico at an all inclusive resort. Last year we went to the Mayan Riviera. I was only a non smoker for 2 months at the time. To me, getting through that week was the greatest achievement of all. The year previous, we went to the same place and I smoked over a carton in a week. This year is going to be a cakewalk.

Anyways, thanks for the inspiration, you have raised my spirits a little for the day. Also I am glad that any advice I have given has been benefitial. I just want to make as much of a difference as possible helping people not smoke. Whatever little things help, its all good.

I want to say "THANK YOU!"
Every little bit DOES help, is needed from time to time and is very helpful!
Oh and by the way, after the second week...time returns to normal! ;-)

If you smoked for a very long time, it's going to take a while for your body to get back into balance. Think of the 4000 chemicals and additives that are in one cigarette. That's a lot of poison that has to leave your body. Exercising will help - walking is fine. You don't have to speed walk, just get out there and walk or do yoga.

One day at a time will get you through this. Drink lots of water too and juices, like cranberry juice, to keep your blood sugars stable.

Take care and keep us posted.

Hi,
I stopped (ha! didnt give anything up - just stopped!! as Alan Carr would say...) 2 weeks and 3 days ago and had flu from the day I stopped to about 5 days ago... and today it is trying to come back... sore, gunky YUKKY throat, popping ears, runny nose, lower energy levels again - I was getting really scared until I found this website and felt comforted.

I'm determined to stay smoke free (I have smoked tobacco plus joints for the past 20 years) after reading this site - so my health has taken a turn for the worse temporarily. I know its early days now and to be patient with myself. I'm planning to take multi vits to give my body a hand in its cleaning efforts and echinacea for the respiratory hell I am feeling...

Thanks for such brilliant posts x

Hi all;
I stopped too. Cold turkey after everything else failed. That was 6 weeks ago. I found a hobby I wanted to start that was pretty expensive and used the money saved to buy what I needed.
Since I quit I've suffered from dizziness, high blood pressure, hot flashes, itching and hives.
I never had a reaction like this when I used meds or nicotine replacements.
My doctor said to take benadryl and use cortisone creams which have helped.
He also suggested I use nicotine gum if it gets too bad but I decided that would be pretty stupid.
It sucks even now. At least once every day I tell myself I could get away with having just one, but I don't.
It goes away fairly quickly.
I don't think of myself as a quitter and this isn't "my quit" like some pet project. I just don't smoke.
I'm not fooling myself with the "I'll wait and have one later" cause I used that before and eventually ... I had one.
I wish the itching would stop and I wasn't hungry so much. I gained 5 pounds.
I chew gum, had my teeth cleaned today at the dentist and take deep breaths. I drink a lot less coffee.
Every few days another box comes in the mail for my new hobby and I try to focus on other things.
Worse problem is difficulty concentrating, staying on task at work and home and paying attention.
At times I seem to be at a loss for words or I don't express what I really mean leading to disagreements and hurt feelings.
I'll see how I feel at 3 months and try to decide what to do then.
It's better now than it was in the first days and weeks.
The hives have subsided a little and I have some days that seem almost normal.
I hope no major events happen in my life because I know that it wouldn't take much to push me over the edge and back into the habit again.
In time I'll get stronger, and so will you.

This blog just saved me...................I quit July 31, 2009 after my annual bout of Pneumonia. I get Pneumonia every year around May and it takes me forever to get over it. This last time I even bruised some ribs from the coughing.
It has been over 9 months since I quit and I am severely depressed. I just keep feeling like a cigarette is the only thing that can make me feel better..............this blog just helped me over today's hurdle.
I hate to think that there are other people out there suffering; but, at least I am not alone.

What gets me through is a thought!!!!! I have a friend who smokes. She is the most gorgeous, sexy woman I know, she looks exactly like Penelope Cruz but even more beautiful. Stunning body, drives a mercedes sports coupe and has the most fantastic body and designer clothes to match. But, the last time I saw her I realized that ................she smells!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, that drop dead gorgeous woman SMELLS!!!!!!!!

I don't want to smell like that.............................That's what keeps me going.

Find your thing............your kids...............your health...............what's your thing. Mine is my Friend N.....Not even my health, my children or my husband can keep me quit. But, my vanity can............Find your motivation to stay quit.

I just want to add my two cents of encouragement to all of you who have stopped smoking and are feeling crappy.
I quit on 17/02/10 - felt fantastic for the first two weeks! managed to do the whole Nicotine patches thing and stayed away from cigs. 3 months on and i feel absolutely dreadful, pains in my back, legs, groin, gneitals (!), joints...and the anxiety and worry is also pretty bad. But...the one thing that keeps me goin is this: "It's worth it to be a non-smoker!". The postings on this site about all those terrible side affects (that ARE NOT mentioned by any of the so-called specialists!) have helped with the anxiety. Knowing that there are others who are feeling the same (albeit crappy!) is comforting. I'm still a non-smoker...and I'll keep going, why? Because WE'RE WORTH IT!! XD

I quit cigs about 2 mo. ago after smoking moderately for almost 50 yrs. I got a severe chest infection a week or 10 days after quitting; the Dr. put me on antibiotics & it cleared up (I thought)...and now I'm getting another chest infection! This is very rare for me, and it's all been since I quit smoking. I'm starting to think the cig-companies put stuff in there to make you sick if you quit? Anyway, it's been about two months now and I'm mad at the addiction for this, so I'll never go back to smoking again. Just hope I get strong & well again soon.

I quit on April 15th 2010, so 5 weeks clear today!. I started smoking in the Summer of 2002 for a reason I cant even remember, slowly over the past 8 years i peaked on an average of 3 packs a day. In Jan I bought the Allen Carr Easyway book and it had been on the side gathering dust..... until a friend bought some duty free cigs after a holiday. I smoked 50 packs in 2 weeks!. I had enough and read the book over 2 days. Best decision I ever made, and it really was easier than i could have imagined. I was sceptical it would work but had reached my limit, i have had no cravings, can sit with smokers and now think "poor bas***ds!. Firstly I'd recommend the book to anyone who has quit but feels they are missing something.

Regarding how I feel 5 weeks later, I have the usual symptoms judging by the previous posts. Achy body, strange occasional pains, blurred vision. heartburn, smelly gas, slight weight gain, some nights constantly waking, feelings of fatigue during the day.

Apart from that all fine!!! :0)

I'm glad i quit though, just wish i'd done it years ago. I will report back occasionally and give a general progress report.

Keep strong all fellow quitters.

I was hospitalized after I stopped smoking it has been thirteen days since I had a smoke and I fill like Sh**. I do not know if there is any relevance to my hospital trip but they thought I had pneumonia and come to find out I ad a sever case of bronchitis. IT was not fun and I am still suffering. there only good part is I have not craved cigs since I quit and I quit cold turkey I have smoked a pack a day for 15 years. I never thought I could quit and never thought I would. This is kind of a odd story but I think this helped me. I am a chronic pain patent and am on percocets. I took three one time and kept telling myself that smoking doesn't do anything for am and that it was for sure going to be the death of me. I repeated this in m head five times of course I was under the influence of narcotics nit I swear to you not. I never net felt like smoking since. I am not saying to try to hypnotize yourself. I am just saying try what works best for you and remember you will quit when you really want to.

i am so happy to locate this forum. i thought i am the only one having the same symptoms. I am a smoker for 12 years with a pack a day. and i am only 29 years old. I quit April 29, 2010, and it's now 6 weeks having clean lungs. Starting from 2weeks after quitting, i felt the same thing, acid reflux, severe sinusitis, ear ache, tingling hands, something pricking on my lungs, constipation, insomnia, palpitations, difficulty in breathing, chest tightness, pain in the neck. I feel like my Body's IMMUNE system is getting crazy.

There were times that i am having difficulty in breathing, i went to emergency hospital a few times, had ECG, blood test, ambulatory ECG, 2D echo, nothing seen. Doctor also suspecting hyperthyroid

I have a friend who is cardio doctor as well, he was suspecting that all this may have been triggered by my acid reflux (GERD) .. all my sinusitis, ear ache, difficulty breathing... so i went to a gastro doctor and was given omeprazole and domperidone. Now, it's been two days taking the meds and the gastric acid reflux in my stomach was gone, my severe sinusitis and ear ache were gone as well. even the shortness of breath was gone too.

I was informed by my friend doctor that i may have had Helicobacter pylori bacteria in the stomach for a while which have got worst when I quit from smoking and may have cause the severe sinusitis, ear ache, pain in the throat, difficulty in breathing and chest tightness when the acid is reflux.

Now, I am very happy to have peace of mind, after 2 days of taking GERD medicine, and after 6weeks of clean lungs, the feelings is totally different than being a smoker...

i hope this goes on and on.

BTW, i gained 10 pounds as well after 6weeks but should not be a problem, i will go out for exercise once my body becomes stable.

i will go back to this forum and post for updates again soon.
