So I want to start by saying that I have never posted anything on the internet or joined any kind of message board but with how crappy I've been feeling I felt like I would try to get any help I can. I've stopped smoking now for about 3 days and the marijuana withdrawal symptoms I have been experiencing are really horrible. Probably the worst part of all of this is the feeling of anxiety, which is the original reason I started smoking. Before I started smoking pot I had some minor anxiety issues that I would say are just a little worse then the normal day to day worries, but nothing that would interfere with my day to day life (work, school, etc.). So to help relax and unwind at night I started smoking a bowl right before bed about 6 months ago. Unfortunately, like most posts I've read, that quickly developed into more frequent usage. Right before I quit, I was smoking about 4 or 5 bowls on worknights and probably triple that on the weekends since I was able to smoke all day. I started to see how it was affecting my work and my social life so I decided to quit cold turkey. Unfortunately, the withdrawal symptoms started almost immediately after deciding to quit. Currently the worst parts of it are the extremely heightened anxiety, my teeth are constantly chattering, the nausea (especially when thinking about food or trying to eat something), the hot/cold flashes where i'm suddenly drenched in sweat, and the really frustrating insomnia at nights (maybe 5 hrs of sleep per night but in the morning it feels like I didn't sleep a single minute).
One of the major reasons I decided to post this is because most people I have read about experiencing withdrawal symptoms were heavy smokers every day for a very long period of time (5+ years), but this isn't the case with me. From 2008-2009 I was a heavy smoker and quit cold turkey and had some bad withdrawal symptoms (obviously should have learned my lesson). Now, I'm having the withdrawal symptoms after approximately 6 months of heavy usage. Is there anyone else out there who has gone through this after smoking for such a short period of time?
I can't believe how much relief I have gotten just from typing this and talking about this but any other help, words of encouragement, or similar personal experiences to help me get through this would be amazing. I greatly appreciate the help and will be wishing that all of us who are currently going through this or have gone through this will overcome it quickly and not have to ever experience this again. Thanks guys.
Hang in there! After 3 days you are feeling it. 6 months of heavy usage is not really a short period. It usually takes 15-20 days for your body to re-balance. Fortunately, there are not proven long-term negative effects from Marijuanasmoking. It sounds like you are just having a rough time of it going cold turkey this round.

It took me 25 days to recover. The first 2 weeks is the most important because your body is in a recovery state. I took a supplement as well and it really helped most when I used it three times the recommended "daily dosage" because marijuana withdrawal symptoms are real.
Hey there, I am a new you! Stopped three days ago...suffering now! I smoked ten years straight for EXACTLY the same reasons as you, quit for a year...smoked for a year...now quit agin! And this time is the worst time ever! I am ILL not just feeling sorry for myself. It takes 3 attempts over 6 hours to eat a bowl of soup. I do not sleep, at the moment, i nap at night, and feel like breathing fire on everyone! So i too wasn't expecting this. I blame it on the substance, I have obviously had to smoke past my previous tolerance level to get the fix, and thus probably binged more this last year than I did before. what we have to remember is we have grown canniboids (scuse spelling) and they only ever go to sleep. It takes a long long long time for them to be considered dead and buried so it dosn't matter how long you have/haven't smoked once you relapse you are as addicted as you were before you quit. Stay strong my friend, im jelous as your probably feeling better now...if you are, tell us about it and inspire us on...please!
Ned are you even a smoker? Looking at your

reply to this serious thread I do not think so. Let me put it in simple terms for you. I am GP, 10th year of practicing (counting down to retirement years). Once you stop doing something that you have been doing for many years of course you will get withdrawal symptoms. You have cannabis before bedtime as a sleeping aid because it relaxes and gets rid of stress. You do it for many years and it becomes normal. It takes the edge off and sleepings no problem. An initial weed smoker will get the munchies which will wear off slowly over a couple of months because your body gets adjusted to the weed and thinks its the norm.
Now after many years you stop smoking weed. So Mr Ned, is a man of your intelligence (Your post indicates you have none) saying that you go back to normal straight away. This is not the case. You will get insomnia because you are moving away from normal (smoking weed before bedtime). You are not as relaxed without the weed and you cant go into deep thought which helps you sleep. You loose your appetite because weed was controlling your appetite for many years. You get anxious because your are less relaxed and more stressed without the weed.
Yes other chemicals can play a part, Nicotine addiction and chronic excessive alcohol consumption can do exactly the same with varying withdrawal symptoms. Those who put tobacco into spliffs sometimes don't even realize they are addicted to nicotine and its not the weed totally which is causing the withdrawal saga. Its the same with anything in life. You stop doing something youve loved doing for many years in your life, of cause you are going to be bored, stressed, anxious.
You have to let your body get back to normal. Picture a period in you life when you were happy (childhood, adulthood, anytime) and weed free. Myself, I pictured myself being ten years old. Picture how happy you were then and happy you are now. Has the weed made you any happier from your old happy non-smoking days. You may think it has but it hasn't (you've forgot what normal happy is). Use a positive memory or image as you motivation. What do you actually want to achieve in life? If you want to achieve nothing and want to smoke weed all day go for it. If you want to get somewhere in life and make it big it will be easier without the weed.
And Mr Ned for your comments about research papers and BS. My friend search the internet and read the thousands of threads about people finding it difficult to stop smoking because of insomnia, anxiety. You don't need research papers for your evidence.
I tell this to all my patients. Its your life, your choices. You can do what the f**k you wanna do with your life!
Thanks
Steve

f**k off u id**t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, you can get addicted to ANYTHING and therefore can withdrawal from it when it goes away. The mind, when in a relationship, get addicted to the person you are with, and when the breakup occurs you got through physical withdrawal that lasts an average of 17 months. So please, do not sit there and spew out stupid facts when anyone can be addicted to anything, and go through similar symptoms of withdrawal when no longer "using." You are entirely useless to this blog, and your ignorance, like your addiction to cannabis, is very strong.
In fairness to Ned i'm sure allot of us had this idea about marijuana when we started. Its not until you become a chronic user and try to stop that you truly feel these effects and move out of the denial you had been in for so long. I know I was someone who believed that it was harmless, that you could not become addicted, but from my own experience and those of my friends around me, I can say it is definitely an addictive substance. And with the stuff continually getting stronger, naturally the come down also increases and so it can be much easier to build a big tolerance and therefore get withdrawal symptoms upon cessation. When I went from smoking joints to loading a volcano vapo my tolerance sky rocketed, and although it is a far safer method of consumption, if you are not careful the burn out can become extreme. its quite simple its called a high for a reason and after the high must come a low, if you chase that low off with more of what caused it, eventually you are going to find your self bankrupt. The true effect of any drug is the opposite of the primary effect, so if you use weed for anxiety eventually it will get worse, if you use it to sleep, it will make it harder in the long run, if you use it for pain, the pain will end up more intense, yet we don't notice these affects until after we stop in taking this substance, and so come to the erroneous conclusion it was the substance helping these things and then relapse...its a vicious cycle. Sure it does have many medical benefits but these should be short term solutions not long term crutches. The sooner we have an honest, open talk about this, the quicker we can get help to all the desperate people trapped, and prevent future generations suffering in the same way. I wish you all the best in your attempts at stopping, if you can make it through this a happy, bright and productive future awaits. You ALL have so much potential and overcoming these obstacles are the keys to unlocking this within you. You are here to overcome this and show others still in that dark place the way out, you are way showers. Go and be an inspiration to others, its people like you (those on the tough path to self betterment) that are leading the way in creating a better world for us ALL. Each one of us that makes this positive step a domino.
I have been a 1x or 2x a day smoker for probably 15 years. I have quit before, but my side effects are different this time. This time I am getting headaches, sleeplessness, and a general foggy feeling. I am 5 days into my stopping and I hope by the end of November I feel much better.
