A couple of days ago, my scrotum and surrounding area was really itchy for some reason and yesterday, I noticed a rash on my scrotum. It's sort of itchy, not painfully so, but I'm still very concerned. I'm using a zinc oxide cream which seems to be helping somewhat, but I've never had any issues down there. I'm not currently sexually active and haven't been for several months now. Any ideas on what it might be, or what I could do about it?

Hi Lex97,

Could be a variety of things, but since you are not sexually active the most common reason is due to excessive sweat. When people lead active lifestyles and sweat a lot or hygiene is not kept up to par an infection can develop. The common infection is Tinea Cruris. Common symptoms are:

The infection often takes the form of a fairly large, scaly, red-brown patch on the groin. In men, this can stretch all the way from the groin to the scrotum. The ridge around the infected area is often very different in colour and feel to the surrounding uninfected skin. There is often an itching, burning sensation in the infected area.

The infection is contagious and can be spread by direct contact. It can also be passed indirectly from person to person, via damp towels for instance.

If it persists for more than a few days follow up with your doctor. Most common medication is antifungal cream. Best of luck! Come back if you have any more questions.
