I know this is fairly old but I still wanted to comment:

I have been diagnosed with PCOS and Endometriosis. I've had rectal menstrual bleeding since I first started having periods. Although most doctors have told me to lose weight (even when I was at a healthy weight) and all my problems will go away, I finally found one who has PCOS and could understand what I go through. She explained that when you bleed out your rectum during your period it's basically an overflow issue (yes, I know how gross that sounds). Your body is flushing out so much menstrual blood, and usually clots as well, that it needs to re-route a bit. Basically you have to correct the hormonal imbalance to fix the problem.

I've been looking into this to see how it's even possible and have discovered it's fairly common.

I'm only 14, and I've been experiencing rectal bleeding and cramping since my period began at 11. I was ALWAYS at a healthy weight , so I know it has nothing to do with that. I've tried telling my mother about this, but she brushes it off every time I  bring it up. The cramping occurs whether I'm just sitting, laying in bed, moving around (I had p.e. every day in school;even a bad period was no excuse), or having a bowel movement. I could have just been changing my pad when suddenly a sharp, shooting pain coursed through my anus. It's extremely painful. Can anyone help me?

Hi, i have the same problem: bleed from anus during my periods only. It has been 3 cycles like that already. Since my periods are painful, i take medicine to relieve the pain, so I am thinking maybe medicine could be  causing this? I usually take NSAID. This time I changed them to those that are not NSAID, so hope next period will be w/o blood from anus. Has anyone found out anything new about why we bleed just during menstruation?

I'm having the same issue. Honestly, at first, I thought perhaps I wasn't wiping properly. My periods are very heavy, and this only occurs during one or two bowel movements at the heaviest point of my period. I noticed that it stopped while I was taking birth control, so I think it's hormonal. Unfortunately, my body doesn't respond well to the hormones, so I had to stop taking BC. I haven't mentioned it to my doctor, but I'm planning to do so when I see her later this month. I am overweight but generally healthy.

I'm also having this problem...I had my daughter in January 2010 (c-section) and 3 months later I started having severe cramps in my rectum 1-2 days before my cycle...by December 2010,  the pain would start 3-4 days before my cycle with rectal bleeding....I tried to discuss this issue with my doctor..who told me it was probably constipation.....but with the type of insurance that I have, my pcp has to refer me to any specialists or ob/gyn.....so I finally found a doctor who would actually listen to my concerns and I have an appt on May 14th 2012...hopefully i'll have a better understanding about what is happening with my body...
My pain started April 19th 2012...rectal bleeding April 23rd 2012 and my cycle has yet to start and today is April 25th 2012. This pain is horrible..unbearable really...I have to take 2 800mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours...and it just dulls it a little...not much help or relief.
I've always been underweight for my height until I had my daughter, which now i'm just at the weight i'm supposed to be...149lbs 6'0 tall.

Hi Everyone,

I have been meaning to follow up to this post that I made over a year ago. I went to my doctor with this concern, first of all he asked me if I was sure if I wiped properly but he said he was not concerned because there was no pain.

During the time of my original post, my husband and I tried to conceive for a few months and now we have a daughter :) She'll be 3 months old in 6 hours :)

I am 30, have been bleeding rectally since I was 18. I also have oral bleeding that started 6 years ago. I have both only during my menstrual cycle. I was diagnosed with PCOS and have had 2 children thru invitro. I saw a hematologist (blood doctor) & it was determined that my bleeding was from a platelet abnormality (I have a normal platelet count). I was given platelet transfusions during egg retrieval in preparation for invitro. I also had platelet transfusions with my first delivery. My oldest is 3.5. I had a natural birth the second time to avoid more transfusions. My baby is 12 weeks old. I stopped bleeding when he was 6 weeks old but started bleeding again a week later. My "cycle" is currently 7 days apart. I have had both the oral bleeding and rectal bleeding every week since. I went to a new ob since my high risk doctor said they only did babies. She told me she thinks i
have a bleeding disorder, not endometreosis
(not sure I buy that). She also has asked me to gather my 12+ years of records and go see another specialist. I have had multiple
colonoscopies and have now been told I need to have a rectaloscopy while I am bleeding rectally. Could be next week if my pattern continues. I just stopped bleeding
Sunday. I'll post back if I find anything out.
It is comforting to know that there are others out there with this same issue. But I am sorry others have to experience these same problems. Has anyone else had the
oral bleeding too?

I wish I had answers; unfortunately I have the same questions as everyone else it seems. What I can do is share a bit of information.

I've had the rectal bleeding during my periods for as long as I can remember. I'm 44 and started getting my period when I was 12. I have been overweight for much of my life, but have also gone through periods where I have not been -- no difference. I was able to conceive very easily with my son who I had by C-section but had two miscarriages after that.

No pain during menstruation generally, and no constipation, but the opposite -- loose bowel movements before and during.

What I also have are a lot of food issues -- food "sensitivities" that can cause me to have food poisoning type symptoms (nausea, need to sh*t, loose bowel movements etc.). So I avoid a lot of things. Not sure if it's connected or not.

I do have at least one hemmorhoid apparently, which was discovered one of the times I actually went to my doctor about this.

I have not had any kind of colonoscopy or barium enemas to check further, which is my fault. I do need to deal with that.

Anyway, that's me. Adding to the information trail here.

I have had rectal bleeding and painful bowel movements (feels like glass shards) before my period and during for the last year or so.  I have had a colonoscopy and they found nothing but a few pollups.  They just said to try this expensive cream which did nothing and take stool softeners which hasn't stopped it either.  So what's the solution/diagnosis?  I am 37 and overweight, have had 2 c-sections and am done having children.

Hi. I'm fifteen. I started my period in the summer of 2012. I've been having issues ever since. I always bleed really heavy out of my vagina during my period, and just as much comes out the back. I too have clots of tissue or whatever. But theres no pain. I have baffled the doctors!! So far, I have had MRIs, ultrasounds, and last week I had a colonoscopy. They didn't find anything unusual, but my follow up appointment is next week. We're basically back to square one. Hopefully we can get this figured out soon, especially before summer. I can't exactly swim when Im on my period, even with a tampon. We went to Disney World and I couldn't swim because of the butt bleeding! It's so annoying. But we can do this, ladies!! I'm so glad to find that Im not alone and not some weird freaky, butt bleeding girl. I really hope we can figure this out!!!

I also have a lot of discharge from the rectum, and I don't think that's normal.

I have not found out anything yet, and still continue to have heavy discharge from my rectum.
I was the fifteen year old who posted a few months ago.

Has anyone looked into intestinal endometreosis? I believe this is part of the problem of why all of us are experiencing the rectal bleeding. I haven't had my theory tested or proved by a doctor yet. I haven't bleed for 8 or 9 months... I am still nursing my almost one year old. I know as soon as I stop I will resume my cycle and have the rectal and oral bleeding again and I am not really looking forward to that with summer finally here.

I have been doing tons of research lately... My four year old has tons of allergies, peanuts, seasonal, and she was just diagnosed with R.A.D. (Reactive Airway Disease). Some doctors catergorize this as Asthma but our pediatrician has said it is different. Well with looking into this I have been cautioned with what foods I should give her. I have been told to steer clear of anything and everything with added colors, flavors, or preservatives. I have been told I need to go all natural with food. We can't even eat orange cheese because of the Annatto color. Upon researching foods I discovered that added and artificial hormones are in lots of our food supply. When we consume those hormones it changes what goes on in our body. I attribute a good part of the reason to why we and so many others have fertility issues to the foods we eat and where they are grown/ produced. Some soils in the U.S. and probably elsewhere in the world still contain now banned pesticides and banned chemicals which get into our food supply. I am trying to transistion over to everything all natural and organic but I am not there quite yet, it gets soooo expensive.

I started my cycle when I was 12 years old. My rectal bleeding began five years later after my first semester away at college. I think environment, diet, and other stresses my have some merit in these issues. Even though there is a large number of us with these issues I know that it definitely is NOT normal to have regular rectal bleeding or regular oral bleeding. Hope my random thoughts make sense. If anyone does find anything out I would love to hear...

 Good luck.

Apparently this is a problem for a lot of us. I have always bled rectally on my period for as long as I can remember. Being overweight is not what causes this, or it cant be just that.... I am 5'0 and weigh 105 so I am far from overweight. I think I may call the dr and see what they have to say. I dont hold out a lot of hope for a satisfactory answer though. I will be told it is normal for that to happen and not to worry about it. Just saying this from past experience with the mds I have dealt with. So all these people think they are weird and it only happens to them.... You Are Not Alone in your weirdness ;-)

I think I will look into the endometreosis thing myself. I have cramping and pain as well and usually the blood is bright red even if the uterine blood is not. I just thought it was something weird that happened to all females and that, well the two areas are close together so there has to be a logical reason for it. Even though I never understood it.
